I'm heading to Philadelphia in a couple of weeks and was wondering what schools not including Penn were located/interesting in and around the city.

Temple is really the only one worth noting. Drexel and LaSalle are meh.

Haverford College. It's right outside of the city and AMAZING.

Well yeah, we're right near Philly. Like half an hour.

That's funny jPoD, b/c Temple would be probably one the last ones I recommend touring. Besides, w/o the students, Temple will generate utter disgust to most out-of-staters that visit during the summer.

Aside from UPenn and Drexel, I'd give priority to Swarthmore.

But also, I'd take a trip over to King of Prussia (2nd largest mall in country) and visit Haveford, Villanova, and
Brynn Mawr while I'm out there.

Other than that theres also:
St. Josephs
Philadelphia University
Arcadia
Temple (but I do not put my recommendation stamp on a Temple visit for out-of-staters unless it's during the school year)

I'm taking marketing at Temple right now during the summer. I think you have no idea what goes on here during the summer. It's plenty lively here. I wouldnt not recommend visiting now, but certainly most schools during the school year. There's nothing wrong with OOS visiting now....

St Joes and Phila. U are a joke.
KoP is near Nova, not Haverford and Bryn Mawr. It's still 30 mins give or take.

Ursinus is in Collegeville- quite close to King of Prussia. Temple would be about last on my list, too. Drexel campus is pretty awful, too.

jPoD, I think very few would take your commentary on any thread seriously b/c you make so many one-liner comments that are unsupported and baseless.

You've yet to answer:
How is Temple the only college in the Philadelphia area worth visiting?

Why Arcadia is a bad school?

What's wrong with choosing Bucknell over Lehigh (especially if your interested in social sciences)?

Why can't an in-stater get into a UC with a 1200-1250?

Don't forget Swarthmore.

I like Temple's dental school.

:D

Bucknell over Lehigh is an obvious choice for anything other than engineering or business.

Oh, good mention MomofWildChild, I forgot about Ursinus.

And Philadelphia University is not a joke, as a small school geared towards business, architecture, and health sciences, I'd say they do a pretty good job.

And I don't know what high horse you're sitting on to be judging, you're going to BU? What if I said going to BU, Northeastern, or Bentley for business was a joke b/c I went to Sloan (MIT), Carroll (Boston College), or Babson?

Isn't the Interior Design program at Philadelphia University top-notch?

For info on Philly schools - check out www.onebigcampus.com. It gives info on all the schools in the Philly area.
We looked at Temple for my d- they have a good sports management program affiliated with their Fox school of Business. I thought Temple had alot going for it. The area right around the school, wasn't the greatest but they are doing alot of work in the area and it seemed ok- but of course I might not travel by myself late at night. Of course I wouldn't travel by myself late at night at any location.

Temple is just one of those good solid public universities that is geared for the "average" college student which is probably comprised of around 70% of all college kids. But I think there is a definite bias on these boards against average students, public u's and urban areas- so when you put them together- watch out for all the negative remarks.

There are people who just hate to be in urban areas and only see negativity with anything associated with it. For them, Temple is not the right school. For alot of other kids, it may just be the right place.

JPoD- you've been to Temple- I've been to Temple. It's a very decent and respectable school for alot of kids. I would not rule it out.

Philadelphia University is note-worthy for all of their architecture programs. Though the science and business programs are only a few decades old, the it was originally the Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts and it's arts and architecture programs are date back to the 19th century.

Relatively new programs like Phil. U, Babson, Hampshire, and Olin have enough trouble getting their butts off the ground when people like you give them such a bad rep.

And really, I don't no how you disenchant Drexel when it's campus is on the exact same level Temple's.

Marny, I never disregarded Temple, I just know for personal experience and general consensus that Temple summer tours do not give that favorable of a view of Temple to many people, I've taken three students there myself.

I would say the same if you are planning to visit Atlanta College Center (besides Spelman), you wont get that good of a vibe in the dead of summer. Yet I would still recommend Morehouse to many with full support.

I just looked at your profile Highlander43089, so I'll suggest some school geared towards your profile. I would say with your scores and your major that some good school to look at would be:

Arcadia University (match-safety for you and if your interested in world history, you have one of the nation's best international studies and abroad programs)

Ursinus
Drexel
Temple
St. Josephs
Rowan

I'd also say stop at Rutgers and Drew on the way as suggested in the other thread.

I know a young woman who was quite unhappy at Philadelphia U (she is very social) and is transferring to Bucknell.
Temple does have some strong programs and is highly regarded by many Philadelphia/Pennsylvania employers. I just don't like that part of Philadelphia that well. My personal bias. :)

And I don't know what high horse you're sitting on to be judging, you're going to BU? What if I said going to BU, Northeastern, or Bentley for business was a joke b/c I went to Sloan (MIT), Carroll (Boston College), or Babson?

Besides MIT, i'd take a business degree from BU over BC or Babson ANY day. But honestly, I could care less what you think of my opinions. That's why theyre called opinions....

I go there now. I love it. My dad is also an Alum. It gets overshadowed by the top schools in the area. Most people from my suburban school dismiss it simply because it's a state school. I'd take Temple over Penn State any day.

I'm from Philly, and clueless about college, I'm trying to find out what ones to look into too
