Colleges/Universities in and around Philly

Stats? Peruso?!?

villanova (10 char)

temple is underrated.. it should be ranked 85-100.. i think

out of all the schools in philly which is in the best area?

What's a good area to you? In the city is one thing? Something like Swathmore is another category?

good area i mean in the city somethin like midtown manhattan or the loop in chicago that type of thing you know nice shopping dining entertainment + decently safe thats what i would define as i good area

OP: You should visit Swarthmore. It's an excellent school.

Swarthmore was too suburban for me. The school also overstates the ability of students to go to Philly.

Well, Swarthmore to Philly is about the same conveniency as Wellesley, Boston College, or Tufts to Boston. I don't think any of the schools overrate public access to the city (in either Boston or Philly) with on campus transit.

And Allen, there are schools in the Philadelphia that provide all of that, but none that are within the city, to my knowledge, except...perhaps, the University of the Sciences.

I think the closest you'll get to what you want is UPenn, and then try the schools out toward King of Prussia (Bryn Mawr, Haverford, St. Josephs, etc.)

-There really aren’t any places in Philly that can compare to Midtown or the Loop. Yes Penn is very close to downtown, but the atmosphere in downtown Philly is very, very different from the two other places, especially The Loop. Personally, I’d take Chicago over Philadelphia any day, but that’s just me. :)

-I don’t know anything about Boston schools or what they say, but, it’s not really that easy to have a night in Philly using public transportation, coming from Swarthmore. To me, it’s much more difficult logistically to have a night out coming from Swarthmore than most other schools in the area. Students using public transportation pretty much have to be at the train station at 11:00 PM to catch the last train into Swarthmore. Of course, if staying out until only 11 at night is ok for certain students, this doesn’t matter.

One could always take a cab the 11 miles, but who has money for that…..

Huh? It's 20 minutes by train from the center of campus to downtown Philly. You don't even have to hassle with parking.

On weekends, the school runs a free shuttle van service to downtown, as well.

The shuttle vans run til about 1:00 am.

Or, go into Phila for dinner, arrive back to Swarthmore about midnight, when the campus parties are cranking up.

My daughter has averaged about once a month going into Philly during her first two years. Mostly for a group dinner and she's been the museums quite a bit for art history courses.

-My point is that Swarthmore is in a suburb, vastly different from the schools inside the city. I also assumed that people would want to go to more than just downtown.

-Something I did not know.

-I guess she and I are different. If I had a metropolis at my doorstep I would want to be there every weekend.... I do, and I am. :)

kk19131 i would most likely have to agree with you the loop is a happenin place, great part of the city chicago is pretty nice..its hard to have something like that..i really want to visit family but i think for schooling in a city the top places to be are NY and something like fordham lincoln center or NYU both in great parts of the city and like depaul and loyola in chicago boston has a bunch of wonderfully located schools too like suffolk

err i meant i want to visit philly not family..lol wow i unconscously typed family instead of philly for some odd strange reason
