Hello,
My daughter has not decided on a college major, but is searching for colleges that have great musical theatre club/organizations for non MT majors. My other daughter at CMU participates in an excellent program - Scotch n' Soda. WE are looking for schools in the east or California. Thank you.

Can’t say which has the “best” but more which has a good amount of MT production opportunities for non-majors or at schools that don’t have a MT major to begin with. But this question is very broad without knowing the level of selectivity of colleges you are seeking. For example, Yale and Brown have great opportunities for someone who wants to be involved in MT outside the classroom. But they are not worth suggesting to a student who is not in the ballpark for applying to those schools. So need more information.

Tufts and Skidmore are other suggestions but am gonna stop without knowing the level of college.

Thank you for responding. My daughter would be eligible to get into any very competitive school (such as Skidmore), but not the most competitive (such as CMU). Thank you again.

OK, well, in any case, Skidmore has a campus organization called Cabaret Troupe and they put on student run musicals that are supposedly very good. Also, their straight theater program is excellent and so a student could go there and minor in theater or music or dance (strong there) or take courses, if not majoring and then get to do musicals with Cabaret Troupe.

You may want to look at Connecticut College. They have a very strong theater program, as well as dance program. You can even minor in Theater. But you don’t have to be a major or minor to audition for their departmental productions and their season tends to include one musical.

Gettysburg, Goucher, Vassar, Barnard, UVA, William & Mary, Skidmore, Conn College, Kenyon, Boston College.

I’d double-check on Kenyon with respect to MT productions. There’s a ton of student-generated theater there, but–at least when my daughter was there as a drama major–relatively little musical theater, either curricular or extracurricular. Lots of great opportunities for singers and actors, but musical theater per se is pretty low-profile. It’s a wonderful school, very much worth considering!

Thanks Times… I forgot the MT part of the question… I was thinking theatre in general.

When I was a grad student at Penn State they had quite a few EC MT and Theatre opps. for non-majors outside of the Theatre program. Could be worth seeing if that is still the case.

I was also going to mention Boston College earlier.

If the OP said that CMU (the university, not the BFA in MT program) is too selective, then I would imagine Vassar would be, as well as UVA as an out of state applicant.

I have a former advisee who was seeking MT and chose to attend William and Mary and so that is another good choice and I’m glad KatMT brought that up.

I realize the OP wants East or CA, but for the sake of the discussion for others interested, Indiana University has a lot of EC musical theater.

Thank you so much for your responses. We will look into the colleges you mentioned. Students like my daughters are the ones that will happily go to see all your D and S on broadway and in community theatre. They love MT and hopefully will support the art for the rest of their lives.
