So what schools have good programs in both Marine Biology and International Relations?

Guessing Stanford is one.

Ucsd?????????

marine biology? hawaii?

I think both (UCSD & HI) are gonna have marine bio....question is: do they also have strong IR?

just found this marine bio program list:
http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/marinebio/mbcolleges.html
just need to cross compare with a similar IR program list.

I always thought UCSD had good IR with regard to the Pacific Rim.

UCSD has both a top 5 poli sci (international relations emphasis) department and a top 5 marine bio program (scripps institute of oceanography). no offense to hawaii but im sure it is not ranked nearly this high in either area.

I should add that these are undergrad interests...Scripts being mostly grad that is.

yes, but i believe ucsd's marine bio is tops in the country.

lol-- colege of the atlantic

If your S plans to get a graduate degree in marine biology, I strongly discourage majoring in marine biology. See my comments [here[/url].

If your S merely wants to major in it and doesn't plan to go to grad school for it, see the link below. It's not complete (missing Cornell, Brown, Stanford, and others), but it's a good starting point.

Scripps and MIT/WHOI are easily the best oceanographic institutions, true. Both are graduate programs, however, and Hawaii's program is nothing to sneeze at (easily in the top 10). UCSB or UCLA would be better for MB undergrad than UCSD.

"UCSB or UCLA would be better for MB undergrad than UCSD."

^^^ are you smoking crack? clearly ucsd would be better place to study marine biology than ucsb and ucla. ucsd's bio program is ranked higher than ucla, and far far higher than ucsb. and ucsd's grad program in oceanography is tops in the country. where would you get that ucla and ucsb would have a better marine biology study than ucsd for undergrad? ive never heard anyone claim that before. and of course clearly ucsd/scripps and mit/woods hole would be the best two institutes of oceanography (ph.d granting) in the country. im still absolutely shocked you would recommend to a poster to attend ucsb for marine bio over ucsd. strange. furthermore, the poster stated his interest in a school good at both marine bio and poli sci/international relations, where ucsb is not even ranked in the top 30 programs. ucsd is top 5 in ir emphasis and top 7 in poli sci overall. so im not sure how you would recommend ucsb over ucsd when both marine bio and poli sci/international relations are extremely strong at ucsd, clearly top 10 in the nation in both, if not higher. it is important to give the poster accurate info, as his ultimate decision could be affected! recommending ucsb over ucsd for mb and poli sci/ir is a bit ridiculous if you have studied the departmental rankings and schools strengths.

warblers-- good point on not specializing too early...thanks.

So, what schools best optimize the presence of a strong undergrad sciences/bio oriented program perhaps with some marine bent, aca warblers recommendation, with a strong IR program? Those are my D's current aspirations, and she's coming of age to start "making her list".

ucchris-- where are you finding the IR rankings? I am less familiar with college IR strengths than the sciences, so I'd like to study some reference material.

check us news departmental rankings. ucsd is 7th overall for political science. us news then breaks down political science departments by emphasis and ranks them. for poli sci these include, international relations, political theory, comparative politics, and american politics. i believe ucsd is top 5 for the international relations emphasis. again i have no idea why the poster would ever recommmend ucsb over ucsd for marine bio and poli sci/ir. that makes no sense when ucsd is much much stronger in both areas. check with experts in marine bio and poli sci, im sure they will recommend to you the same thing i did.

check bio rankings in the us news departmental rankings and you will again see ucsd is top 15 i believe in bio, while ucsb is not top 30. i imagine ucsd is even stronger in marine bio than its generalized bio ranking, especially with its oceangraphy department, as its strenghts trickle down to the undergraduate program. i dont believe marine bio is ranked however in the rankings as an emphasis, so you would have to go by the schools rankings in bio and oceanography.

Count me among those folks who agree that an underclassman whom intends to pursue a career in Biological Oceanography or Marine Biology/Marine Science does not need more than the basic natural sciences foundation (and math). With that, just about any major will do because the real work is in graduate school. Go to a Marine Biology web site and you will discover that there are virtually no jobs in the field for an individual who holds only a bachelor's degree.

That being said, I you love marine biology and and hell bent on a B.S. in the field, then here are some UNDERGRADUATE programs on the east coast that offer the major and have extensive facilities.

SUNY Stony Brook
Richard Stockton College (NJ)
U of North Carolina-Wilmington
U of Miami (FL)
U of Connecticut
College of Charleston
U of South Carolina

I don't know if each of these has an International Relations major, but I would think that there are relevant offerings in their Political Science, Economics, History etc. Departments. The International Business program at U of South Carolina has a great reputation, for example.

(Disclaimer: I go to JHU)

You should also check out Johns Hopkins it's regarded as having one of the best IR programs (the graduate school is world known and is definetely one of the top 3 http://www.sais-jhu.edu/ ) and JHUs powers in terms of biology, public health, medicine, and others go without saying. I'm not sure about JHU and marine bio specifically but I do know that bio in general here is very strong.

jhu is excellent in international relations. i dont know much about jhu's marine bio, but if bio rankings are any hint, they would be very good.

ucchris-- are you looking at the US News grad dept rankings? Couldn't find departmental rankings in the undergrad US News.

ps.....JHU too close; we live maybe a mile away & D would never, ever want to be that close to potential parental interference!

I agree with recommending UCSD.
