So basically. I need to start compiling a list. Thanks in advance!!

What is your home state? What can your family afford?

North Carolina
Cost is something my parents have said we’ll worry about when we get there. So I’m not too sure on that end of things. I suppose disregard it for now. (I realize that sounds awful haha)

Are you considering any of the UNC system schools?

I attend a school that sends 30+ students to UNC Chapel Hill each year; I’ve definitely looked into UNC system schools and am open to them because of convenience and cost. However, I’m much more interested in seeing what other options I have

In your area, UNC-Chapel Hill, Emory, UVA, William and Mary, and Duke all have excellent English and history departments, and your stats make you a viable candidate. Of these, UNC-Chapel Hill is probably going to be the best deal by far unless your family is eligible for a lot of need-based aid. UNC-Asheville is a possible safety.

Obviously, UNC in-state is a great deal and Carolina is a wonderful school. That said, I think Vanderbilt also sounds like it would be a good school for you.

Yes, Vanderbilt is a very good suggestion. Georgetown is another possibility if you’re interested in a private school a little further afield.

Most selective schools, and even many less-selective ones, will have fine English and history departments. One advantage for students of the ridiculously competitive academic job market since 1970 is that highly competent faculty haven’t been able to cluster in a few tippy-top schools.

Since you said you were more interested in urban areas…

Vanderbilt
Emory
Georgetown
Rice
Penn (reach)
Columbia (reach)

Thanks everyone!
I fell in love with William and Mary and Georgetown, but I don’t really see my stats giving me that great of a shot at these schools. I’ve worked hard on the straight As, but my SATs aren’t stellar and my ECs are severely lacking.
I just found out I’m taking a college trip up through New England in a couple of weeks, so hopefully that’ll let me see more of what’s out there!
