Colleges where students call professors by first names...?

Does anyone know of any?

I never heard of such a thing, but maybe I am old fashioned.

Why? 10char

Reed College

Macalester College

Grinnell, Middlebury

lots of the LACs

I just have a couple teachers at my high school that go by their first names and… I like it. :P

Earlham College.

Some at William and Mary, often depending on the department / individual Professor. Many are great cooks too!

Bryn Mawr. I just visited my friend there and kept getting confused when she referred to random people by their first names–professors–while we were discussing classes/academics.

Carleton, according to my daughter.

Depends on the professor. I think in many cases it’s inappropriate, in some it’s inappropriate to call them by some status name.

That’s interesting – it seems like LACs are the places this seems to happen. That would make me very uncomfortable.

Guilford College

Definitely Carleton.

Hampshire College

First names become easy when you talk directly with professors a few times a week, as at LACs. It’s like first names with your boss, someone more senior who is directing your work; everyone at college is also adults.

Almost all of my professors sign emails with their first name and invite us to refer to them by first name, but sometimes it’s just not that kind of relationship, even if you do talk to them several times a week.

I’d imagine at most places, it just depends on the professor and your relationship with them.

Guilford College - Any school with a quaker history. It’s a sigh of respect for everyones opinion being equally valuable.

A teacher isn’t supposed to be your equal, they’re TEACHING you the ways of the world, which implies that you’ve got less of an understanding of one specific subject…
