Colleges with a Forestry major?

My S has decided he might want to major or minor in Forestry. Is there even such a thing? I think I could sway him to Environmental Science or Natural Resources if that opens up more schools. He will also be doing pre-med... I know it sounds weird but he wants to be a rural or mountain rescue ER DR. so it kind of make sense. He is a true nature lover.

a friend’s son majored in that…makes pretty good money, but the economy has hurt that industry. Loves it though. I know he looked seriously at Univ of GA, Auburn and Miss State. Ended up at Auburn. He has close family all over the country (midwest, northwest, etc), so I don’t think he limited himself to just southern schools.

I’m sure there are many others, that’s just my only first hand knowledge.

Syracuse University has SUNY’s well-regarded school of forestry:
[SUNY-ESF, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry](http://www.esf.edu/)

Yale has a school of forestry, but it is a graduate school.

How much can you afford to pay?
What are his stats?
Geographic/regional preferences?

Oregon State University has a college of Forestry

University of Missouri has a forestry major. They also have a medical school.

So do Colorado State University (Fort Collins), University of Montana (Missoula), Washington State (Spokane) and Northern Arizona U (Flagstaff).

The University of Minnesota has a nice College of Food, Ag, and Natural Reasources, and its reputable, it has been around forever (my great grandparents went to the ag school)

[Forest Resources : College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences : University of Minnesota](http://www.cfans.umn.edu/UndergraduateStudents/CurrentStudents/MajorsandMinors/FR/index.htm)

Forest Resources Major.

Michigan Tech

Ditto University of Missouri in Columbia (Mizzou). When my son was touring, there was a girl in his group from Washington state looking at the Forestry program. You can go to their website, select majors, and see the program outline for classes, etc.

Here is a list of accredited Forestry programs:
[Society of American Foresters - Education](http://www.safnet.org/education/accreditation.cfm)

I’m not sure how many mountain rescue ER docs there are, though it makes sense that a doc with mountaineering experience, for example, would best understand the medical hazards of that environment. Forestry is an unusual pre-med major, however, and I think other majors would serve him better as a preparation for medical school. For example, in physiology, the physiological effects of extreme environments are a topic of research. If he does want to stick with forestry, he should consider that forestry is fairly specialized and vocational, but that there is a wide range of other majors in the natural resources/environmental sciences fields. If he looks at the majors in these areas, he’ll find lots of interesting and innovative programs that are less specifically vocational forestry. A couple of schools with programs that are good examples of this are Minnesota and Illinois. Many universities also have superb outing clubs that could satisfy his love of nature. In any case, I would suggest that your son email some docs who work in that area and ask their opinion of the best prep for a medical career in that field.

If your son is interested in rural medicine, there is a huge need for docs in that area. Medical schools in some states have programs specifically focused on producing rural physicians. IIRC, there might be some joint BS/MD or early admission programs for students who want to go into rural medicine.

WOW!! Zapfino…, that is an amazing list of rural MD programs… my S will be VERY interested. I know there is one at St Lawrence that ties in with the SUNY’s. He understands that it is a little unusual but he would satisfy his pre med requirements, he just really wants to major in something outside of science. There are actually quite a few ER Dr’s that also work in the mountains on Search and Rescue teams. That would be my S’s dream. He is already an Eagle Scout, Wilderness First Responder, volunteer fireman, and volunteers up in our local mountains on the search and rescue team. He LOVES emergency medicine and would like to work in rural areas. Don’t know where he got this new idea about Forestry. I’m thinking he might have to broaden it to include ES, because it looks like Forestry will be more vocational. He has about a 3.6 GPA from a top prep school, rigorous course load, and 2190 SAT’s so far.

Northern Arizona University is a great place with a wonderful Forestry program.

Your son sounds like a fascinating and accomplished person. I admire his goal.

I’m not trying to talk him out of Forestry, but check this out:
[University of Utah College of Health : Department of Health Promotion and Education : Bachelor of Science Degree](http://www.health.utah.edu/healthpromotion/cep/Degree%20Programs/index.html)

It is a bachelor’s in Health Promotion with emphasis in Emergency Medical Services (they say it’s a great degree for pre-med), but if you scroll down the page, they have a specific track for those interested in going into wilderness rescue. It says it requires significant rescue and backcountry skills as well as wilderness medicine.

Michigan State University. Forestry was my husband’s undergraduate degree.

One of my female cousins was the first woman to graduate from the Univ of ME Forestry program… back in 1970 somethig. The program was highly respected back in the day…may be worth exploring?

[The University of Maine - School of Forest Resources](http://forest.umaine.edu/)

If the forestry is what he enjoys most or is the most appealing factor…if he chooses not to go to med school, he could also get the 1-year Paramedic. Pair that with his forestry or ES degree and could still do the search & rescue in the mountains.

As long as he does the pre requisites for med school, they like to see a variety of majors. We were told your major didn’t matter, they’ve had journalism, arts, math majors, etc accepted into med school.

I work with foresters and they are the smartest, nicest, most down to earth people I have ever met.

What, no one has mentioned the U of Washington? Unbelievable!
