Colleges with best merit aid

I've done a lot of research, but I was wondering if there were any colleges out there that provide great merit aid to students with a 3.55 gpa, around 29 ACT. Any good liberal arts colleges or OOS colleges that have cheap OOS tuition and are good colleges?

Why don’t you start with these threads:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/52133-schools-known-good-merit-aid.html

Retest.

If you get your ACT to 30 or higher, you’ll get a lot more merit. Also take the SAT.

M2ck, are we keeping you awake? I’m waiting for a flight. Why are you posting in the middle of the night? Or are you back in CA?

Would OOS merit aid be possible at University of California–Riverside? I’ve looked at some websites that gives ideas for what their top applicants are, and it seems as if my scores would be in the ballpark for lots of merit aid. Only problem is, it’s a public school in California, so being OOS would probably hurt my chances a lot.

Many schools toward the middle of the country have lower OOS tuition ( although there are exceptions). Ohio University offers some merit money.

bump…

Define cheap…how much can you pay?

Two thousand.

UCs do offer scholarships to out of state students, but most of them are not that big, and they do not seem to indicate how large the Regents Scholarships are (the amounts do vary by need, but there is nothing indicating that they would be sufficient for high-need out of state students).

Your stats would get the $15,000 Blazer Elite scholarship at University of Alabama Birmingham, leaving about $10,000 per year of remaining cost of attendance. You would probably need a Stafford loan and decent summer earnings to cover the rest if you get no additional scholarships or need based aid (check the net price calculators).

You won’t get any merit aid from UCR. It’s hard enough for much more qualified in state residents to get Regents (the main source of merit aid at UCs), and nearly impossible for OOS students.

The University of Wyoming gives a lot of merit aid for OOS students, and it’s done by formula so you can easily figure out how much they’ll give you. Then again, it’s in Wyoming…

Thanks for the advice. What about University of Georgia, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and Lewis and Clark College?

Are you in-state for any of them? Do you know how to Google?

As far as L&C, I don’t think you’ll get much. My D had a 34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, #1/450 in her class. She got 1/2 tuition, wasn’t even interviewed for the full tuition scholarship.

“Two thousand”

If all you can pay is $2k per year, you’re not going to find much that will work. That would require essentially a free ride (tuition, room, board, books) so that your $2k could pay for misc costs.

Your test scores aren’t high enough.

Re: UCR…it costs $50k per year OOS, there is NO WAY that UCR would give you $45k+. At MOST they would give you for your stats is maybe $5k.

What state are you in?

You have to be reasonable. Your stats are good, but not high enough for the merit you need at known schools. You need a LOT of aid. Your best bets will likely be a state school that you can commute to, or some odd regional school that might give you a huge scholarship for your stats.

I believe you would only need ACT of 28 or above to receive the ‘National Buckeye Scholarship’ from Ohio State!!

**National Buckeye Scholarship for non-Ohio residents **

Award amount
