I used to be on here when I was applying for college last year. I am going to the local state university, which has a growing Asian Studies program. I fell in love with everything Chinese, and am seriously looking at majoring in Asian studies. Naturally, I want to transfer somewhere that has an outstanding AS department. However, I can't really find any colleges that seem to be "known" for their AS majors. Anyone have any ideas? Suggestions? Help?

check out Furman University.
my good friend goes there, he got to go to China the summer before his freshman year, he went back to China first semester of his sophomore year, and got to study abroad for a whole year his junior year, and now he's at John Hopkins for his masters in international affairs

Another note about Furman, a few years ago a Japanese family donated a Budhist Temple to the university - I mean a real life Budhist Temple. Furman has built a Japanese garden and is now in the process of rebuidling the temple in front of the garden, It's call (in Japanese) "A Place of Peace"

Grinnell, Oberlin, Willamette, Lewis and Clark, University of Puget Sound, Vassar, and Whitman all have good Asian Studies department. UPS and Oberlin are particularly noteworthy.

Harvard, Columbia, Penn if you are ivy bound.

Check which schools recieve Federal funding as centers for Asian studies.

Penn nicely offers two types of Asia studies majors: one for those interested in cultural/anthropology studies, and another that focuses on modern politics, history, economy etc. I myself am in the latter category and have nothing but praise for my professors thus far. I am on a first name basis with the dept chair, which is great in a large research university
