Colleges with good clarinet professor

I'm planning on majoring in clarinet performance in college, so I was wondering if anyone knows of schools with really good clarinet teachers since everyone always says (for music students especially) to go to a college with good teachers. And more generally, what are some colleges with good music programs (not conservatories...I want to get a "real" college experience)? Thanks for the help.

Did you post this in the music majors forum?

Sorry, I’m still new to college confidential so I didn’t know there was a music majors forum, but thanks for telling me…ill post it there now.

Definitely check on the Music forum as that’s where the experts can help you best.

I know the University of Michigan usually has 2-3 professors for each instrument. A quick look confirms that Michigan has two professors for clarinet: associate professor Daniel Gilbert and assistant professor Chad Burrow. I don’t know how good they are, but given the strength of the program, I assume they are good.

Rice is strong and so is Indiana. Many years ago I started as a clarinet major at Indiana. I didn’t make it! You will have to audition to get in.

The University of Puget Sound could be worth a look. The super, all-state clarinet player from my son’s HS is there this year. The kids I know who went there rave about the experience, including a flute major.
