Colleges with good jazz/music programs

Have you considered Northeastern or Duquesne? Both are Div 1AA and both have music technology degrees. I will have to do a little more digging to come up with some outside of the northeast.

My son will be attending Northeastern in the fall and is interested in playing in their jazz band (he is majoring in engineering but they have several bands/music ensembles open to non-music majors as well). One thing to note: each year Northeastern also offers a few renewable $10,000 music scholarships to incoming freshman which are available to non-music majors. I think there are auditions in the spring and in the fall (my son missed the spring audition because we did not know about this when he applied, but he received an email earlier this summer letting him know about the chance to audition in the fall as well); the only requirement is that scholarship recipients are required to participate in two bands or music ensembles as part of their scholarship each year. Also, Northeastern has the top co-op program in the country; this would provide some good opportunities working in the music industry during undergrad years.

We are planning a trip to Northeastern. Thanks.

OK, here are a bunch more that I turned up by correlating info from the college board site and the AES (Audio Engineering Society) site. All of these have 4-year undergrad music technology or similar programs. I make no claims about the quality of any of these programs, I am simply pointing out that they exist.

Appalachian State - Boone, NC - Div 1AA
California Lutheran U - Thousand Oaks, CA - Div III
Capital University - Columbus, OH - Div III
Elmhurst College - Elmhurst, IL - Div III
Georgia Southern University - Statesboro, GA - Div 1AA

Texas State U at San Marcos - San Marcos, TX - Div 1AA
U Arkansas at Pine Bluff - Pine Bluff, AR - Div 1AA
U Wisconsin Oshkosh - Oshkosh, WI - Div III

Now I will point out that I have personal experience with Oberlin and I know that they have an outstanding Conservatory program called TIMARA (Technology in Music and Related Arts), a truly bad football team that is always in search of decent players (which could definitely help someone with a B average get in) and a great Jazz program that was just given $5 Million to build a new home for the Jazz department.

Several more culled from Mix magazine's website:
