Colleges with Good Out of State Merit?

@CCinDenver - you started this post several months ago; wondering how things are looking for your kid?

My kid would LOVE to attend Colorado, but we are on a low budget, and have to consider schools with merit. He’s looking at Alabama, Nebraska, and Arizona right now. Hoping you are figuring things out, and would love to hear your progress.

@CCinDenver

Has your D looked at NM TECH. Very strong STEM undergrad with a excellent grad school placement.

As a CO resident, your D will be eligible for NM in-state rates.

Thanks so much to all of you! My D was fortunate enough to qualify for National Hispanic Recognition Program, and decided to focus on the schools that would give good merit for NHRP (similar to National Merit for some schools). She also got her ACT up to 34 which helps a lot with merit $. She has decided that she wants to do both Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, so she narrowed it down to schools that offer Biomedical at undergraduate level. We visited several schools, thanks for all the suggestions. She has narrowed her top 2 down to Arizona State and University of Arizona. She is torn almost 50/50. With University of Arizona, with her stats including 4.0 and 34 ACT, she automatically qualifies for full out of state tuition, and then will get an extra $6,000-$10,000/year for NHRP, plus $1500 study abroad money and automatically in Honors College. With Arizona State, she’d get full out of state tuition, but no additional money. But she was more impressed with ASU’s engineering college, and loved the new Engineering dorm & community. She wasn’t as crazy about the "Barrett honors college program, even though it does get high ratings. We are making one more trip out to Arizona this coming weekend so she can visit both schools one more time to see which lands on top for her. University of Arizona is having an all day Arizona Experience thing they put on in the fall, and she’ll be able to see more of their Engineering facilities including biomedical, and she’ll also see their brand new Honors Village. She also wants to give Barrett and ASU another look. Wish us luck, and thanks for any input you may have on either college. I am a little nervous about Tucson… I always thought it was nicer than Phoenix from vacations, but I’ve heard that the most of the town itself isn’t very nice and a lot of poverty, etc.

@bgbg4us - Colorado schools are expensive! You should definitely check out Arizona. Great merit aid available, and we were really impressed with Arizona State University and University of Arizona. My D didn’t think she would be at all interested in either, but I talked her into visiting, and she was all excited about them after touring.
