What are some good colleges to look into for someone interested in sociology. Asking this for a friend of mine.

Wisconsin is excellent, as is Chicago. Chicago had a large role in creating sociology as an academic discipline.

Chicago as in University of Chicago? What sort of stats would you need to get into their programs? (Wisc and Chicago)

Well, in terms of individual professors, Barry Schwartz at Swarthmore is awesome! You should read his book, "The Paradox of Choice." Unfortunately, however, the book is very American-centric.

Look into Pomona College if you want a smaller vibe...

If s/he's interested in research/academia, the top ten undergrad schools for PhD preparation in social sciences are:

Swarthmore, Haverford, Carleton, U Chicago, Reed, Princeton, Williams, Oberlin, Yale and Pomoma

Source: Weighted Baccalaureate Origins Study, Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium, PhDs granted from 1992 to 2001.

^ Are those listed in any particular order? Just out of curiosity... :o

Yes, first to tenth, by the percentage of future social science PhDs to overall BA (BS?) grads (who didn't necessarily major in social science).

Here's another version, courtesy of interesteddad:

Number of PhDs per 1000 graduates

Academic field: Sociology

PhDs and Doctoral Degrees: ten years (1994 to 2003) from NSF database
Number of Undergraduates: ten years (1989 to 1998) from IPEDS database
Formula: Total PhDs divided by Total Grads, multiplied by 1000

Note: Does not include colleges with less than 1000 graduates over the ten year period
