I am a current high school sophomore, and I have begun to think about potential colleges to apply to. So far, I have decided that I would like to pursue a biochemistry or molecular biology major in college. I have a perfect GPA and scored a 1410 on the PSAT without prep, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some universities that have particularly strong programs in biochemistry and/or molecular biology.
What is your state of residence? Many state flagship schools have excellent programs in biochem/mol bio - Michigan, Wisconsin, UT, Berkley, UCB, etc.
If you can tell us what price range your parents have told you they can afford to commit per year, that can also help with suggestions. (Don’t just guess what your parents can afford - ask them!)
Lastly, is there anything else you know that you are looking for in a school? (Size, location, etc.)
I live in Massachusetts. In terms of location, I would be willing to go anywhere that is not too rural. While size is not of the utmost importance, I wouldn’t want to attend an incredibly small school.
At the moment your PSAT is a bit low for that list. Not as familiar with the new SAT but I think you want to get to at least around 1480 to have a good shot at most of them.
Yes but I scored 710 on math and 700 on verbal without prep in sophomore year, and I haven’t taken precalculus. I think I could probably get my SAT up to the 1500s by junior year.
1410 as a sophomore PSAT score appears to fall near the 99th percentile.
In terms of schools similar to those you listed (#6), look into NYU, Columbia, MIT, UCSD, Stanford, Wake Forest and Emory.
As exclusively undergraduate-focused, but otherwise academically comparable, alternatives to schools of the above type, consider Amherst, Bowdoin, Hamilton, Pomona, Claremont McKenna and the suggested Haverford.
I am always surprised to read posts like this where 2 seemingly contradictory beliefs are held. (1) Not all colleges are alike (2) students are so alike that a good school for one is a good school for all
