Colleges with strong engineering and music programs?

Hello I am currently a senior trying to get ready for college

I have like a 3.85 GPA and have scored a 5 on my AP chem test and a 4 on my AP history.

I have scored 1860 on my SAT and 28 on my ACT, and will take them again soon as im sure i can boost up my score now that ive studied for them.

I am currently taking AP english and AP Calculus, and will start a college engineering class soon. (it's this senior jumpstart program at a community college).

And so far ive just been thinking that i'll probably go into mechanical engineering or some sort of an engineering degree. But then I got to thinking, do I really want to do years of more math and science? and will I even enjoy engineering?

shouldn't i do something that i really love, even though it might not get me the best salary?

My biggest passion is music. Not to give my self a pat on the back or anything, but

I am a really good piano player. I play for school choir/jazz band and have performed for state-level singers.

I am getting really good at the guitar too. I just won the school's guitar off for homecoming performing the song 'eruption' by van halen.

I am also a singer. Last year I performed at the all state solo vocals. I also love singing pop songs while playing guitar or piano. I have recorded myself on my ipod and showed it to some people, and they were amazed and even recommended going out on big time competitions.

So now I am looking for colleges that offer strong engineering/music programs.

I'm thinking that I should major or minor in music performing and major in engineering,
and go into music engineering. Once I start working as a audio engineer and music producer, maybe I can even record my own songs. If that doesn't workout, i'll probably go into grad mechanical engineering school with my engineering degree.

any suggestions on what i am trying to do? any good schools for what i am trying to do?

and also I am looking for schools that will offer me full tuition scholarships or something close to that.

any insight will be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Carnegie Mellon (CMU) has a Bachelor of Science in Music and Technology that is jointly offered by the College of Engineering, the School of Computer Science and the School of Music. That degree might interest you if you are planning on pursuing a career in music engineering.

Check out the University of Rochester (NY)

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, it’s from the Audio Engineering Society:
[AES Education Directory by Program Type](AES Education Directory by Program Type)
And here is a Wikipedia article on that term, worth reading because the terms are used in a loose and vague way. The programs listed in the link above produce what are essentially music technicians. This is a popular major at UMass Lowell for example.

[Audio engineering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Audio engineer - Wikipedia)

Studying engineering and music however is different. U. Rochester would be great for that, as would Carnegie Mellon.
Tufts has this program:
“The Tufts Music Engineering program is supported by the departments of Music and Physics in the School of Arts & Sciences; the departments of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering; and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.” [Music Engineering at Tufts](Music Engineering at Tufts)

You may want to use resources to do a little more investigating into what you want to study so you can pick the right kind of college.

U Cincinnati has both excellent engineering and music.

I’d look into music producing. It still allows you to be around and involved music, and if you become remotely successful you’ll have the money and resources to try to make it as a musician. Not sure about colleges or majors, though. Good luck.

The University of Miami has renown programs in both concentrations. Music Engineering and Jazz Studies through UM’s Frost School of Music are amazing there also.

and also I am looking for schools that will offer me full tuition scholarships or something close to that.

??

For what? For stats or for music talent? I think you have to major in music to get a full-tuition music scholarship at many schools. some schools might give “some merit” for a music minor, but not sure.

What is your budget? If you need a full tuition scholarship, then does that mean that your parents will pay for room, board, books, fees, etc (about $15k per year)??

An ACT 28 isn’t likely going to get you a full tuition scholarship at a school with good eng’g and good music.

What is your home state?

thank you mom2collegekids and everyone else that had suggestions.

I live in Alaska

My parents dont wanna pay anything for my college expenses. frankly they can’t really afford to. I’m hoping for internships of some sort and maybe loans to pay for the rest of my college expenses

That’s not really going to work. Students are limited to ~$30K of total loans for UG school. Head on over to the financial aid forum to learn more. You need to look at what YOU can afford - an in-state school. UAF is ~$14K/year. With a job and $5.5K loan as a freshman you will still need some help from your parents.
