So apparently some colleges have something known as the "tufts syndrome" where they would reject overqualified applicants whom they believe will get accepted at some place better. I was just wondering whether anyone had any ideas which colleges have such a 'syndrome'.

washu!

but usually these colleges waitlist the kids who are victims of tufts syndrome rather than rejecting them

I saw quite a few SAT 2200+ well rounded applicants get waitlisted from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute RD.

Swarthmore is infamous for this.

Are you serious about RPI? DARNNN> That's one of my safety schools I was going to apply to next year...all my proposed safeties are now harder to get into apparently than Harvard cause the better you are, the more likely you won't get in...sortof weird.

Anyways;

George Washington University

WashU, definitely.

Northeastern

GW. alot of well-qualified got waitlisted, including me. I had much higher stats than their averages with th ECs, good letters of recommendation and essays. it was my almost safety school. pretty shocked. apprently im not alone though, i hate tufts syndrome haha

do they just waitlist overqualified students or are there some cases where they outright reject them?

i guess they reject them too, but usually i thought it was waitlisted

Is Boston College or Oberlin College prone to tufts syndrome??

I got wait listed to both of them :(

George Washington for sure! I'm a victim :(

It was kind of disappointing, but I've come to take it as a compliment.

definitely washu.

uchicago

If there are any people who are applying to some of these schools next year, and want to avoid becoming another "tufts syndrome" story, I suggest you ensure that the school knows you are seriously interested in the school, and not just using it as a safety (even if it may be).

many schools keep track of visits, or any contact the student has had with the school... so make sure you talk to admissions people, ask questions, visit if you can, etc

the way i see it, it can't hurt

kenyon.....

Tufts perhaps?

Actually, rumor has it that Tufts does not have Tufts syndrome.

oh goossshhh. who would have thunk.

UNC-Chapel: Hill-instate and waitlisted! Lots of kids with lower stats got in. Accepted at Oberlin, Grinnell, Reed, Case Western and Lawrence. Offered varying amounts of scholarship $$ from all of the LACs. Letting the school know you are interested is important. D did not show UNC any interest but put a lot of effort into the LACs. UNC was supposed to be her "safety" (much easier to get in as instate roughly 40-50% admit rate) in the event the LACs could not offer enough $$$.
