Maryland and Army Top List of Home Games on 2007 Navy Lacrosse Schedule

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Back-to-back games against Maryland and Army are two of the featured match-ups that will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium when the nationally-ranked Navy lacrosse team returns to the playing field this spring. The Mids will play their annual 12-game regular-season slate with five match-ups against teams ranked in the 2007 Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Top 25.

Prior to opening the regular season at home on Feb. 17 against Saint Joseph's (12:00 pm), the Midshipmen will face defending National Champion Virginia (Feb. 3, 2:00 pm) and third-ranked Syracuse (Feb. 10, 12:00 pm) in a pair of preseason scrimmages. Both contests are slated to be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

Following the Mids' opener against Saint Joseph's, Navy will travel to Easton, Pa., where it will open the Patriot League portion of its schedule against Lafayette on Feb. 24 (1:00 pm). Since joining the Patriot League in 2004, the Mids have turned in a 17-2 record against conference opponents and have won three-consecutive Patriot League regular-season and tournament titles. Last season, Navy finished 5-1 in the league and shared the regular-season title with Colgate before claiming the tourney crown with wins over Lehigh (9-2) and arch rival Army (8-5).

"The two things that impress me the most about the current state of lacrosse in the Patriot League is the maturity anad professionalism of the coaches," said 13th-year Navy head coach Richie Meade. "Lacrosse is one of the premiere sports in the Patriot League in terms of national exposure and the level of competition. The member schools of the Patriot League continue to improve and we in turn must also continue to build upon our success at Navy to compete on a national scale."

Navy will return to Annapolis on March 2 (7:00 pm) to play host to No. 21 North Carolina in what has been an exciting match-up in recent years. The Mids have won four in a row against the Tar Heels, including a convincing 11-3 victory in Chapel Hill a year ago. Six of the last eight games have been decided by two or fewer goals, while four of the last seven contests have gone into extra minutes.

Four of the next five games on the schedule are against conference foes with only one of the four being played in Annapolis. Lehigh, who dropped a pair of contests to the Midshipmen, will play host to Navy on March 10 at 1:00 pm. The Mids will briefly step out of conference play to face Canisius on March 13 at 10:00 am. Following the Canisius contest, the Midshipmen will board a plane headed for Dallas, Texas, where they will battle conference opponent Holy Cross in a neutral site match-up scheduled to be played at Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University. The two programs are set to battle March 17 at 1:00 pm Eastern, 12:00 pm Central.

"We are excited to play in the state of Texas," said Meade. "Texas is one of the emerging areas in the development of high school lacrosse and by playing in Dallas, we will have a foot in the door in terms of recruiting. I think it's a great opportunity for Navy, Holy Cross and the Patriot League to get exposure in one of the up-and-coming hotbeds for lacrosse."

The Mids will play host to Colgate on March 21 at 4:00 pm in somewhat of a grudge match. The Raiders were responsible for Navy's lone conference loss a year ago, thumping the Mids, 6-3, in chilly Hamilton, N.Y. It marked Navy's first loss to the Raiders in the six-game series. The two programs missed out on a rematch when Army upset top-seeded Colgate, 10-8, in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals.

Four days later, Navy will travel to Lewisburg, Pa., where it will battle Bucknell at 1:00 pm. The Mids own a slim 3-2 advantage over the Bison thanks to their 9-5 victory over Bucknell at the First 4 Invitational in San Diego last spring. However, the last time the two programs battled in Lewisburg (2005), Bucknell got the best of Navy in overtime, setting back the Mids, 8-7.

On March 31, the Mids will have the opportunity to avenge a pair of losses to Georgetown from a year ago. The Hoyas defeated the Mids 9-5 during the regular season and earned a 9-7 win at home in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown, ranked No. 5 in the preseason poll, owns an 11-6 series advantage and has won five of the last six contests. Navy's last win in the series was in Washington D.C. where it turned in a 7-5 victory in 2004.

The Mids will look to add to their winning streak against Maryland when they play host to the seventh-ranked Terps on April 6 at 7:00 pm. After losing 11 in a row to Maryland, including four-consecutive 6-5 decisions, Navy has turned the corner, winning three straight. Last year, Ian Dingman fired in the game-winning goal with just eight seconds remaining to lead Navy over the fourth-ranked Terps, 7-6, in College Park.

The annual Army-Navy Star Game is set for April 14 in Annapolis (12:00 pm). The Mids have won 11 in a row against their arch rivals, including Patriot League championship games in each of the last two seasons. Navy owns a nine-game winning streak in Star Games, including a thrilling 11-10 win at West Point last spring.

Navy will face Johns Hopkins in its regular-season finale on April 21 at Homewood Field in Baltimore beginning at 12:00 pm. The Mids have lost 32 in a row to the Blue Jays, but not without putting up a fight. Navy has lost six of the last nine games by one goal, including last year's heart breaker where Kevin Huntley's slow roller found its way between Matt Russell's legs with five minutes remaining in the contest and proved to be the game-winner.

The four-team Patriot League Tournament is slated to be played April 27 and 29 at a site to be determined. Traditionally, the tournament is played at the site of the highest seed. Since joining the league in 2004, the Midshipmen have played host to two of the last three tournaments.

Only 2 more months folks! "The game of champions"....

This promises to be an exciting year for Navy Lax....and once again a tough one!

Can't wait!!!! :)

Midshipmen Ranked No. 9 in Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Poll

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Navy men's lacrosse team is among the top-ranked teams in the country according to the recently released Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Poll. The Midshipmen, who are ranked No. 9, will square off against five teams ranked in the top 25.

The Mids open the 2007 campaign at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with a pair of scrimmages against No. 1-ranked Virginia, who went undefeated in '06 en route to winning the National Championship, and Syracuse, who turned in a 10-5 mark a year ago.

The bulk of Navy's games against ranked foes are later in the season with the exception of a March 2 matchup against No. 21 North Carolina in Annapolis at 7:00 pm. The Mids will play four-straight games against nationally-ranked opponents, including three ranked in the top seven of the preseason polls. Navy closes out the month of March with a road contest at No. 5 Georgetown at 1:00 pm on the 31st. The Hoyas have won five of the last six contests against the Midshipmen, including their 9-7 win over Navy in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last spring that ended the Mids' season.

On the following Friday (April 6), the Mids will play host to seventh-ranked Maryland at 7:00 pm. Navy has turned the corner in its series with the Terps, winning three straight. Navy owns a nine-game winning streak in Star Games, including a thrilling 11-10 win at West Point last spring.

And as they have for the last three years, the Mids will close out the regular season with an April 21 meeting against No. 2 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field in Baltimore. Navy has lost six of the last nine games in the series by one goal, including last year's heart breaker where Kevin Huntley's slow roller found its way into the goal with five minutes remaining in the contest, proving to be the game-winner.

The Midshipmen return seven starters off last year's 11-4 team that earned the program's fourth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Three of Navy's top four scorers return, including Second-Team All-American Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) who produced 22 points on 18 goals and four assists out of the midfield.

Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Pick Mids to Win the Patriot League

BALTIMORE, Md. - Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook has picked the ninth-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team as its preseason favorite to win the Patriot League for the fourth-consecutive year. The Mids have won at least a share of the regular-season Patriot League title in each of their three seasons as a member of the conference, while they have compiled a flawless 6-0 record in the Patriot League Tournament.

While Navy is the league favorite, Colgate is nipping at the Mids' heels in the No. 2 position. Last year Navy and Colgate finished deadlocked atop the league standings, as each team turned in a 5-1 record. It was Colgate that handed the Mids their lone loss on a blustery day in Hamilton, N.Y., where the Raiders scored four fourth-quarter goals to defeat Navy, 6-3. By virtue of its win over the Mids, Colgate hosted the Patriot League Tournament, but Navy would not have the chance to avenge its earlier loss, as the Raiders were dropped by fourth-seeded Army in the semifinals.

Lehigh, who lost to the Midshipmen in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament a year ago, and Bucknell, who failed to make the tournament after a year filled with injuries, are tied for the No. 3 spot in the preseason poll.

Despite losing every starter from last year's 8-7 squad with the exception of goalkeeper Adam Fullerton, Army is ranked No. 24 in the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason National Poll and is picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League.

Lafayette and Holy Cross, who put together a combined 2-25 record last season, will duke it out for the final two spots.

Navy's season opener is slated for Feb. 17 against Saint Joseph's at 12:00 pm. The Mids' Patriot League opener is the following week (Feb. 24) at Lafayette beginning at 1:00 pm.

Seven Mids on Inside Lacrosse Preseason All- Patriot League Team

BALTIMORE, Md. - Half of the 14-player Preseason All-Patriot League Team put out by Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook is made up of Midshipmen, including six members of Navy's senior class. Six of the seven Mids on the preseason list garnered All-Patriot League recognition in '06, including four who earned first-team honors.

Headlining the list of preseason picks is two-time All-American Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) who was a unanimous First-Team All-Patriot League selection last spring. One of 25 semifinalists for the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy, Looney was Navy's top-scoring midfielder where he produced 22 points on 18 goals and four assists. Fighting off a shoulder injury throughout the season, he produced either a goal or an assist in 11 of the Mids' 15 games, including a four-goal effort to lead Navy to its ninth-straight Star Game victory over arch rival Army.

Looney is joined in the midfield by senior Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), who is the lone Midshipmen named to the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-Patriot League team who did not receive all-conference recognition last spring. Another in a long line of blue collar Navy players, Wallin recorded 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Despite missing three Patriot League games after suffering a severely sprained ankle the eve of the Colgate contest, he played particularly well against Patriot League foes. He scored a pair of goals and added an assist against Bucknell, while equaling his scoring high with an assist and a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in the Mids' Star Game win over arch rival Army.

After being granted an additional year of eligibility from the Patriot League, 2006 First-Team All-Patriot League selection Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) will look to anchor the Mids' attack this spring. Dingman paced the Mids' offense with 33 goals last spring, the 16th-most by a Navy player in the program's 99-year history. Along with 11 assists, he was Navy's second-leading scorer with 44 points. Ranked No. 1 in the league in goals and goals per game, he closed out his junior season ranked 30th in the country in points per game (2.93 ppg) and 14th in goals per game (2.20 gpg). Heading into his senior campaign, Dingman stands eighth on the Mids' all-time scoring list with 146 points, where he trails seventh-place Dave Bayly by seven points.

Junior Jordan DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and senior Andrew Dow (Hauppauge, N.Y.) will look to continue the defensive dominance the Mids have enjoyed over the last several years when the two take to the field on Feb. 3 for the Mids' opening scrimmage against returning National Champion, Virginia. DiNola, a 2006 Honorable Mention All-American, and Dow, a member of the 2006 All-Patriot League Second Team, were crucial members of the nation's top-scoring defense that gave up a stingy 5.47 goals per game, more than a goal (6.60 GAA) less than the 2005 NCAA-qualifying Midshipmen. Navy gave up double-digit goals just once during the '06 season, in an 11-10 winning effort at Army, and only three times in the last two years (31 games).

The face-off position is one of the most important on the field, yet it seems to get the least amount of hype. Last year, William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) made a name for himself on national television when he won 16 of 17 face-offs and subsequently was named the Most Valuable Player in the Mids' league-opening win against Bucknell at the First 4 in San Diego. A 2006 First-Team All-Patriot League selection, Wallace won 129 of the 225 draws he took, finishing the season ranked 14th (.573) in the country in face-off percentage. As he approaches the start of his senior season, Wallace is one of only three players in program history to reach the 200-win mark in the face-off category. He stands third on Navy's all-time face-offs won list with 209. In addition, Wallace picked up a team-high 87 ground balls last spring, the second most in school history, and was ranked ninth in ground balls per game, scooping up 5.80 per contest.

The final Navy player to earn preseason all-league kudos is senior Victor Barger (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who received Second-Team All-Patriot League honors last spring as a defensive specialist in his first full season at the long stick position. The long stick midfielder position has traditionally been Navy's strength over the years, in particular the last four seasons in which names like Bucky Morris and Seth DiNola have provided the Midshipmen with a cohesive mix of brains and brawn up the middle.

Navy is the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League for the fourth-consecutive year according the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook. The Mids have won at least a share of the regular-season Patriot League title in each of their three seasons as a member of the conference, while they have compiled a flawless 6-0 record in the Patriot League Tournament.

The Mids' season opener is slated for Feb. 17 against Saint Joseph's at 12:00 pm, while their Patriot League opener is the following week (Feb. 24) at Lafayette beginning at 1:00 pm.

Navy Lacrosse to Make Four National Television Appearances in 2007

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The ninth-ranked Navy lacrosse team will make at least four national television appearances this spring, including back-to-back home games against Maryland and Army that will air on CSTV. The Mids could make a fifth appearance should they reach the championship game of the Patriot League Tournament that will be carried by CSTV.

Navy will make its first television appearance on March 31 when the Mids travel to the nation's capitol to avenge a pair of losses to Georgetown suffered last spring. Navy, whose last win in the series was in Washington D.C. where it turned in a 7-5 victory in 2004, dropped a 9-5 decision to the Hoyas during the regular season, while Georgetown earned a 9-7 victory at home over the Mids in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Game time has been pushed back to 3:00 pm to accommodate ESPNU's live coverage of the contest.

On April 6, the Mids will look to extend their winning streak against Maryland when they play host to the seventh-ranked Terps on CSTV beginning at 7:00 pm. After losing 11 in a row to Maryland, including four-consecutive 6-5 decisions, Navy has turned the corner, winning three straight. Last year, Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) fired in the game-winning goal with just eight seconds remaining to lead Navy over the fourth-ranked Terps, 7-6, in College Park.

CSTV will also air one of the most storied rivalries in college athletics, the Army-Navy game. The annual Star Game is set for April 14 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis with face-off slated for 12:00 pm. The Mids have won 11 in a row against their archrivals, including Patriot League championship games in each of the last two seasons. Navy owns a nine-game winning streak in Star Games, including a thrilling 11-10 win at West Point last spring.

Navy will travel to Homewood Field in Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins on April 21 in its regular-season finale. Game time is set for 3:00 pm and will be televised by ESPNU.

The four-team Patriot League Tournament is slated to be played April 27 and 29 at a site to be determined (highest seed) with CSTV airing the championship game. Since joining the league in 2004, the Midshipmen have played host to two of the last three tournaments and have claimed the tournament title in each of those three seasons.

Once again, Navy has partnered with 1430 WNAV to provide complete radio coverage throughout the spring lacrosse season. Eight of Navy's 12 contests will be carried live on 1430 WNAV. Those eight contests will be streamed live on www.NavySports.com, along with the March 13 contest against Canisius and the March 21 game against Colgate. In addition, Navy's newly-formed partnership with WFED will expand its coverage to the Washington, D.C.-metro area as WFED will carry the Holy Cross (March 17), Bucknell (March 25), Georgetown (March 31) and Johns Hopkins (April 21) games live.

Face-Off Yearbook Names Five Mids to Preseason All-America Team

BALTIMORE, Md. - Two-time All-American midfielder Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) headlined the list of Midshipmen recently named to Face-Off Yearbook's 2007 Preseason All-America Lacrosse Team. Three of the five Mids on the list have previously earned All-America recognition, including Looney and junior defenseman Jordan DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) who were named All-Americans last spring after leading Navy to its third-consecutive Patriot League title, as well as its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

One of 25 semifinalists for the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy, Looney was Navy's top-scoring midfielder a year ago where he produced 22 points on 18 goals and four assists. Fighting off a shoulder injury throughout the season, he produced either a goal or an assist in 11 of the Mids' 15 games, including a four-goal effort to lead Navy to its ninth-straight Star Game victory over arch rival Army. Looney has been named to Face-Off Yearbook's Preseason Second-Team All-America squad.

A 2007 Third-Team Preseason All-America selection, Wallace won 129 of the 225 draws he took, finishing the season ranked 14th (.573) in the country in face-off percentage.

DiNola and senior Andrew Dow (Hauppauge, N.Y.) will look to continue the defensive dominance the Mids have enjoyed over the last several years when the two take to the field on Feb. 3 for the Mids' opening scrimmage against returning National Champion, Virginia. DiNola, a 2007 Preseason Third-Team All-American, and Dow, a member of the 2007 Preseason Honorable Mention All-America Team, were crucial members of the nation's top-scoring defense that gave up a stingy 5.47 goals per game, more than a goal (6.60 GAA) less than the 2005 NCAA-qualifying Midshipmen. Navy gave up double-digit goals just once during the '06 season, in an 11-10 winning effort at Army, and only three times in the last two years (31 games).

After being granted an additional year of eligibility from the Patriot League, 2007 Honorable Mention All-America selection Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) will look to anchor the Mids' attack this spring.

The Mids will play their final preseason tune-up this Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium against third-ranked Syracuse beginning at 12:00 pm. Navy's season opener is slated for Feb. 17 against Saint Joseph's at 12:00 pm.

Mids Picked to Win Fourth-Straight Patriot League Men's Lax Title
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The ninth-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League for the fourth-consecutive year according to a poll voted on by the league's coaches and sports information directors. The Mids have won at least a share of the regular-season Patriot League title in each of their three seasons as a member of the conference, while they have compiled a flawless 6-0 record in the Patriot League Tournament.

Navy secured 12 of the 14 first-place votes (eligible for only 12 due to not being able to vote for yourself) to pace the standings, while Colgate picked up the remaining two first-place votes as the No. 2 team in the preseason poll. By virtue of its win over the Mids, Colgate hosted the Patriot League Tournament, but Navy would not have the chance to avenge its earlier loss as the Raiders were dropped by fourth-seeded Army in the semifinals.

Despite losing every starter from last year's 8-7 squad with the exception of goalkeeper Adam Fullerton, Army is ranked No. 24 in the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason National Poll and has been picked to finish third in the Patriot League.

Bucknell, who failed to make the tournament after a year filled with injuries, and Lehigh, who lost to the Midshipmen in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament a year ago, round out the top five in the poll at No. 4 and 5, respectively.

Lafayette and Holy Cross, who put together a combined 2-25 record last season, will duke it out for the final two spots.

Navy opens its season on Saturday at home against Saint Joseph's. Game time is set for 12:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with the annual Meet the Mids autograph session immediately following the contest. Single-game tickets may be purchased by stopping by the Navy Ticket Office on Brownson Road, by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or via the internet at www.navysports.com. Tickets can also be bought on game day at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Tickets prices are $7 for adults and $3 for students. A medical redshirt may just be the life preserver the Naval Academy has been waiting for.

Senior Ian Dingman, eighth on Navy's all-time leading scorer list, has been granted a fifth year of eligibility, allowing him to return to the field for one final season as a Midshipman. One of the greatest attackmen to ever take the field in Annapolis, Md., Dingman's tumultuous career includes a run to the national championship during his sophomore season, separation from the Academy in his junior year due to academic ineligibility and reinstatement in time to play during the 2006 campaign....

Navy Men's Lacrosse Opens Season Saturday vs. Saint Joseph's

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The ninth-ranked Navy lacrosse team opens its 2007 campaign Saturday with a home contest against Saint Joseph's. Game time is set for 12:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with the annual Meet the Mids autograph session immediately following the contest.

The Midshipmen, who are favored to win their fourth-consecutive Patriot League title, turned in an 11-4 record a year ago and claimed a share of the Patriot League regular-season title. Navy also made its third-straight NCAA appearance, something the program has not achieved since 1992-94. While the Mids return the bulk of their offense and defense, they are faced with the task of replacing All-Americans Matt Russell in goal, Jon Birsner at attack and Steve Looney at midfield.

Head coach Richie Meade will look to two-time All-American Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.), a unanimous First-Team All-Patriot League selection last spring, for his leadership. One of 25 semifinalists for the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy, Looney was Navy's top-scoring midfielder in 2006 where he produced 22 points on 18 goals and four assists. Fighting off a shoulder injury throughout the season, he produced either a goal or an assist in 11 of the Mids' 15 games, including a four-goal effort to lead Navy to its ninth-straight Star Game victory over archrival Army.

Looney is joined in the midfield by senior Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), who is the lone Midshipman named to the 2007 Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-Patriot League team and did not receive all-conference recognition last spring.

Navy's attack will be anchored by 2006 First-Team All-Patriot League selection Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.), a 2004 All-American who ranks among the top three active goal scorers in the country with 92.

Also returning to the starting attack is Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) who turned in 12 assists to go along with his 23 goals last spring. He heads into his junior campaign with an impressive 31-game scoring streak where he has recorded either a goal or an assist in every game in which he has worn a Navy uniform. Last spring he turned in a trio of hat tricks, including his three-goal performance in Navy's 11-10 Star Game win over Army.

Saint Joseph's opened its season a week ago at Delaware where the Fightin' Blue Hens turned back the Hawks, 23-6. Delaware held the Hawks to just 15 total shots, including five in the first three quarters. Freshman midfielder Peter Slowik and third-year middie Sean Cullinan paced the Hawks with two goals apiece, while Slowik added an assist for a game-high three points. Sophomore keeper Erik Hotaling gave up all 23 goals, while making 20 stops and saw Delaware take more than 60 shots on the afternoon. Saint Joseph's was 0 for 11 on extra-man opportunities and won just six of the 32 draws.

Navy owns a 3-0 series advantage over Saint Joseph's, including a 12-2 victory over the Hawks in last year's season opener. The two first met in 2002 in Navy's season opener, a game the Mids won, 16-2.

Single-game tickets may be purchased by stopping by the Navy Ticket Office on Brownson Road, by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or via the internet at www.navysports.com.
