It's not unusual for Easterners to head to Texas for spring break, but Navy's and Holy Cross' lacrosse teams plan to make a little history while they are here.

In what's being billed as the first NCAA Division I lacrosse match in the Dallas area, Navy will take on Holy Cross at noon Saturday at SMU's Ford Stadium.

"Navy played in the Astrodome in 1971 against Johns Hopkins; that was the first one in Texas," Tom Fitzsimmons, president of the North Texas chapter of U.S. Lacrosse, said. Fitzsimmons is one of several organizers who helped bring the game to the area....

Mids Ranked No. 4 in Men's Lacrosse Coaches and Media Polls

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Off to its best start since 1989, the Navy men's lacrosse team boasts a 6-0 record and is ranked No. 4 in both the USILA Coaches Poll, as well as the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Midshipmen picked up three first-place votes in the media poll, as it held at No. 4 for the second-consecutive week. Meanwhile, the Mids jumped over Duke into No. 4 on the coaches poll after picking up a pair of victories last week against Canisius and Holy Cross.

Cornell held on to the No. 1 spot in both polls, marking the first time this season a team has been ranked No. 1 in consecutive weeks. The Big Red, however, has not played a game since defeating Army, 7-4, on March 10. They will be back in action Tuesday evening when they travel to Durham, N.C. for a 7:00 pm battle with the fifth-ranked Blue Devils. The top-five teams in the coaches poll remained the same with Navy and Duke flipping spots in the poll. Meanwhile, the media poll's top four teams remained the same with Albany and Duke also changing spots with the Great Danes taking over the No. 5 spot and the Blue Devils moving down to No. 6.

Navy is one of only four teams in the country that is unbeaten, joining Cornell (4-0), Albany (5-0) and Fairfield (5-0). The Mids' six wins are the most in Div. I lacrosse this spring, while Virginia, North Carolina and Patriot League member Bucknell have also turned in seven wins in '07.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Patriot League foe Colgate. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Navy Takes Three of Four Weekly Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Following a pair of victories last week, including a 12-2 victory over Patriot League opponent Holy Cross, three Navy men's lacrosse players have garnered weekly recognition from the Patriot League the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Junior attack Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, All-American Jordan DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) was named the defensive player of the week for the second-consecutive week, while senior Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) picked up his third Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week nod.

At least one Navy player has been the recipient of a Patriot League weekly award in four of the five weeks, including defensive player of the week in each of those four weeks. In all, five different players have garnered honors from the conference office.

Mirabito paced the Midshipmen last week by producing nine points in wins over Canisius and Holy Cross. He turned in a pair of goals and a pair of assists against the Golden Griffins on Tuesday before recording a five-point game against the Crusaders that featured his third hat trick of the 2007 campaign. Mirabito has now scored a point (goal/assist) in 37-consecutive games which is the second-longest current streak in Div. I men's lacrosse. Heading into Wednesday's contest against Colgate, Mirabito is tied with Colgate's Matt Lalli as the top point producer in the Patriot League, averaging 3.33 points per contest.

DiNola and Finnegan continue to anchor one of the nation's stingiest defensive units in the country. Last week the Midshipmen allowed just seven goals in two wins, an average of 3.50 goals per game. Navy stands No. 1 in the country with its 4.50 goals-against average, giving up just 27 markers in 360 minutes of play. DiNola held one of the premier scorers in the country, Canisius' Kevin Ross, to one goal and one assist. Ross currently stands fifth nationally for active goal scorers, scoring 96 in his career.

Finnegan, meanwhile, had a sensational week working in the goal where he made 19 saves and gave up just five goals. He stopped 10 shots against Canisius in nearly 57 minutes of action and on Saturday, he held Holy Cross scoreless while making nine stops in his 56-plus minutes. He finished the week with a 2.68 GAA, while saving 79.2 percent of the shots he faced. He leads the nation with his .721 save percentage and owns a 4.11 GAA this spring.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Patriot League foe Colgate. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Recapping Last Year's Meeting
• Unranked Colgate outscored fourth-ranked Navy 4-0 in the fourth quarter to hand the Mids their first loss of the season, a 6-3 decision by the Raiders at Tyler's Field. For Navy, it marked just its second loss in conference action since joining the Patriot League in '04.
• Four different players scored the Raiders' four goals in the final stanza, including senior Brian Robinson whose two-yard strike at 4:49 broke the 3-3 tie and sparked three goals in the final five minutes.
• Colgate dominated the pace of the game early as Navy struggled to get the ball on the offensive side of the field. The Mids had multiple clearing opportunities that went awry most likely due to the strong winds and blustery, heavy snow falling in the first quarter. Navy was 0 for 4 on clear attempts before finally getting its first offensive possession after four minutes elapsed.
• The Raiders got on the scoreboard first when attack Rob Ryan fed senior middie Robert Trasolini for an eight-yard strike on an EMO at the 8:08 mark in the opening quarter.
• Navy knotted the score when All-American Billy Looney slid from the right side of the box to shoot a 10-yarder up the gut at 14:22. Looney gave the Mids a 2-1 lead when he scored on the exact play he scored on four minutes earlier, nailing a left-handed shot.
• Rookie Brandon Corp evened the score at two apiece when Matt Lalli tossed Corp the ball from behind the cage and Corp fired in a left-handed shot from eight yards out just before the half.
• Looney completed the hat trick when he took a pass from Nick Mirabito and targeted his shot with 2:03 left in the third quarter and gave the Mids a 3-2 advantage heading into the final quarter.
• Navy was held scoreless for the final 17 minutes, while Colgate had an offensive explosion in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals on eight shots in the final 15 minutes.

• The Mids are off to their best start since the 1989 squad opened the season 6-0 ... a win over Colgate would push Navy's record to 7-0 and give the program its best start since 1986 when the Midshipmen began the year 8-0 before dropping its final four games of the season.

Navy Hangs 15 on Colgate, Improves to 7-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.), William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) and Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) combined for 11 goals to lead the fourth-ranked Navy lacrosse team (7-0, 4-0 Patriot League) to a 15-10 victory over Patriot League foe Colgate (4-3, 1-1 Patriot League) Wednesday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy utilized a 5-0 run in the opening quarter to help seal its seventh-straight win of the season, giving the Mids their best start since 1986 when Navy opened the year 8-0.

After dropping a 6-3 decision to the Raiders last year in Hamilton, N.Y., the Midshipmen came out with one thing on their mind - revenge. Ironically, the charge was led by Daratsos, a rookie who did not feel the sting of last year's loss. Just 14 seconds elapsed in the game before Daratsos stuck in his first of four goals on the afternoon. He followed up with a second goal just over a minute later, firing in a shot from the left side, 10 yards out. By the 12:21 mark, Navy held a 3-0 lead as sophomore attack Bruce Nechanicky (Montgomery Village, Md.) produced his seventh goal of the year.

Navy extended its lead to 4-0 when senior Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) fed Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) on an extra-man goal at 5:03. On the ensuing face-off, Wallace won the draw, picked up the grounder and headed straight to the goal where he scored the first of his four goals on the day at the 4:57 mark.

The Mids opened up a 6-0 lead when Wallace took a pass and poked it past Colgate keeper Tom Harrington just 2:40 into the second period.

The Raiders finally got on the scoreboard with 10:20 remaining in the half as a Joshua Back goal staged a mini run by Colgate. The Raiders went on to score back-to-back extra-man goals at 9:23 and 7:02 by Nick Monastero and Kevin Colleluori, respectively, in what turned out to be a penalty-plagued afternoon. In all, 16 penalties were called against teams that came into the contest as the two least penalized teams in the Patriot League.

Navy answered with a pair of goals by Dingman and Wallace before Colgate's Brendan Hurley scored the final tally of the half at 1:13, as Navy held a 9-4 advantage at the intermission. Dingman ended the game with three goals and in doing so he moved past Mike Herger (1987-90, 107 goals) into third place on the Mids' all-time goals scored list with 108.

Navy salted the game away with four-consecutive goals, including a score by junior attack Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) who extended his consecutive games with a point streak to 38 in a row, the second longest in the country.

Navy outscored the Raiders, 5-2, in the third quarter and while Colgate pitched a 4-2 advantage in the goal column in the fourth quarter, it was too little, too late.

"Last year our only Patriot League loss was against Colgate, so we definitely had that on our mind," said Wallace, who pitched his first-collegiate hat trick. "We were emotionally very excited for this game and to come out and get five goals right away in the first quarter was exactly how we wanted to start this game."

The Midshipmen scored just three goals on eight extra-man opportunities which is not bad considering no team had scored an extra-man goal against Colgate in its previous six contests (0-12). Meanwhile, the Raiders seemed to figure out the Mids' man-down defense, converting on five of its seven man-up opportunities.

Navy outshot Colgate, 54-34, while also winning the ground ball war, 39-34. Face-offs were nearly split down the middle as Colgate won 15 and the Mids claimed 14, including 13 by Wallace.

"Last year, Chris Eck (12-23 face-offs) had my number, so coming into this game I was focused on my face-off game," said Wallace. "Colgate is a tough team and Eck is an effective player. I believe he has been hurt, but he'll make a difference now that he's back."

The 10 goals by Colgate marks the first time since last year's Army-Navy game that a team has been able to put up double-digit goals against the Midshipmen and just the third time in the last 22 games.

Navy will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Lewisburg, Pa., to face 18th-ranked Bucknell. The Mids and Bison are set to face off at 1:00 pm and will be carried live on 1430 WNAV with Pete Medhurst calling the action. In addition, Bucknell will provide a live online video feed free of charge via the Bison web site.

William Wallace, a senior on the Navy men's lacrosse team, has a lot on his plate these days. He is the main faceoff man, plays on the second midfield line and is on extra-man offense. He contributed in all three phases in a 15-10 Patriot League victory over Colgate yesterday in Annapolis.

Wallace finished with four goals and 10 ground balls and won 13 of 19 faceoffs for the Midshipmen (7-0, 4-0). Navy led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, and it could have been more lopsided. Two of its shots hit the goal post, and freshman goalkeeper Tim Harrington saved four point-blank shots....

• Mirabito's goal gave Navy the momentum heading into the second quarter, as the Mids went on to outscore Bucknell 4-2 in the second quarter. Navy opened the second quarter with a goal by Jon Birsner who targeted a shot off an assist from Billy Looney and knotted the game at two apiece.

Navy has found scoring threats just about everywhere it has turned in the first month of the season.

And that, perhaps more than a typically staunch defense, is a promising sign for the fourth-ranked Midshipmen.

The Mids (7-0, 4-0 Patriot), who visit No. 17 Bucknell tomorrow, have scored at least nine goals in every game and reached double figures in four of their last five outings. That includes a 15-10 thrashing of Colgate on Wednesday ignited by six straight goals to start the game....

Navy Men's Lacrosse Team Improves To 8-0 With 6-3 Victory Over Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior attack Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) scored three goals, including a critical fourth-quarter goal with 5:20 left that stemmed a Bucknell rally, to help lead Navy (8-0, 5-0 in the Patriot League) to a 6-3 victory over Bucknell (7-2, 1-1) in front of 1,025 fans at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Mids improve to 8-0 for the first time since 1986 and for only the second time since 1965.

"Our defense was outstanding this afternoon," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "If you only let a team get off nine shots on goal, the odds are you're going to win. Our offense has played well all year, but today was not our best day. In the second half we made some poor decisions, but to Bucknell's credit their defense did a good job, especially their goalkeeper."

Navy dominated play in the first half and through much of the third quarter, scoring five of the first six goals of the game.

Dingman got Navy on the board with a man-up goal with 7:56 left in the first quarter off an assist from Nick Mirabito (Jr./Binghamton, N.Y.). The assist marked the 39th-consecutive game that Mirabito has scored a goal or dealt out an assist in a game, the second-longest such streak in the country.

Dingman made it 2-0 with 3:28 left in the first quarter off an assist from Bruce Nechanicky (So./Montgomery Village, Md.) and then Nechanicky scored a goal of his own early in the second period off an assist from William
Wallace (Sr./Bloomfield Village, Mich.) to make it 3-0 Navy.

The Bison finally got on the board with 10:39 left in the second on a man-up goal by Perry Menzies, but Tommy Wallin (Sr./Mountain Lakes, N.J.) answered with 1:03 left in the second off an assist from Nechanicky to give Navy a comfortable 4-1 lead at the half.

Nechanicky made it 5-1 with 10:58 left in the third quarter off an assist from Mirabito, before Bucknell worked its way back into the game on back-to-back goals by Joe Mele and Brian Gargan. Gargan?s goal came with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Navy man-down defense was tested in the fourth quarter as the Mids were hit with four penalties in a two-minute span. Navy was two men down for one minute and then had to kill a 30-second penalty and a one-minute penalty in succession.

After returning to full strength, the Mids reassumed control of the game and Dingman's unassisted goal put the game away.

The Navy defense was sensational once again, allowing just nine shots on goal. Senior goalie Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) made four saves. Another key facet was face-off game as the Mids won all 12 draws, including an 8-for-8 performance by Wallace, while Mikelis Visgauss (Setauket, N.Y.) was 4-4.

"After giving up 10 goals to Colgate earlier this week, we focused on man-down and unsettled situations," said junior defenseman Brendan Teague (Annapolis, Md.). "When the pressure is on, we become more focused and tighten things up."

Navy will travel to Washington, DC, to take on the No. 7 Georgetown Hoyas (4-2) in a game that has been changed to 1 p.m. according to the Georgetown web site. The game will be televised on a taped-delayed basis by MASN at 4:30 p.m.
