<p>Transcript Of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's Comments following practice on Monday, March 26</p>

<p>In Attendance: Bill Wagner (Annapolis Capital), Corey Masisak (Washington Times) and Bob Socci (Navy Radio Network) </p>

<p>Wagner: Can you expound a little bit on what you talked about at the luncheon as far as conditioning. First of all, why is it so important for guys to be in absolute super condition right now when they aren't playing in any games? </p>

<p>Johnson: I know you didn't ask me that. You aren't serious are you? </p>

<p>Wagner: You need them in game shape right now? </p>

<p>Johnson: You would like for them to be if you are going to come out and compete and play Division I football. I'm not going to watch you play three plays and then puke your guts out on the sideline because you aren't in shape. How do I know that you are going to fight through being tired during a game? I'm not worried about if the guys can pass the PRT when they come back, I'm worried about if they can fight through it mentally. It's as much mental as it is physical. </p>

<p>Wagner: Guys are in shape at the end of the season I would presume. They have been through an entire season of conditioning. </p>

<p>Johnson: Our guy's better be in shape before the season, during the season and after the season. </p>

<p>Wagner: So what's happened between the end of the season and when these conditioning drills started that would cause guys to not make it through. </p>

<p>Johnson: They have pea brains. They can't push through. We didn't do anything that guys shouldn't have been able to finish. Some guys are going to be in better shape than others. During the winter here the weather isn't great and you don't get outside to run much so you lose a little conditioning and that's why when we do those drills you have to push through it. I want to find guys that are mentally tough and can push through things when it hurts a little bit. That's what I'm talking about. </p>

<p>Wagner: Can you tell us what you do during those conditioning drills? </p>

<p>Johnson: We do stations. We do agility drills, football movements; we do different things at different stations. </p>

<p>Wagner: How long does it last? </p>

<p>Johnson: It depends on how hard they work. </p>

<p>Wagner: It starts at 5:45 every morning? </p>

<p>Johnson: Three days a week unless I get mad and then we do more. </p>

<p>Wagner: At one point did you guys go every day of the week because you weren't pleased? </p>

<p>Johnson: Pretty close to that. </p>

<p>Socci: In addition to conditioning, how much of it is injury prevention as well? </p>

<p>Johnson: A lot of it, but the big thing is it's just a gut check. You want to see who's mentally tough. If the other team has the ball on my six-inch line on fourth down I want the guys that are mentally tough out on the field that aren't going to give in. I want guys that aren't going to give up. I don't care who runs the fastest mile and a half; I want guys that are going to fight through a little adversity. </p>

<p>Wagner: So at one point you obviously weren't pleased with how things were going and you took charge. In the past the senior class kind of self policed what went on, did that not happen this winter? </p>

<p>Johnson: We had some guys step up towards the end. I'm not going to move my standards to them; they have to come to me. By the end of the two weeks they did. </p>

<p>Wagner: Is that why Luke Lagera quit? </p>

<p>Johnson: I don't think so. He said he lost the love for football. </p>

<p>Wagner: Did he lose it during conditioning? </p>

<p>Johnson: I don't know when he lost it, but I don't think that's why he quit. </p>

<p>Wagner: What is your expectation for Corey Johnson this spring? </p>

<p>Johnson: I want to see if he can play. I know he's a pretty good athlete. We will get the pads on here in a day or two and see how much he can learn, how quickly he can learn and how much he can retain. </p>

<p>Wagner: Will it be a lot on Buddy and the other secondary coaches to try and teach him what it's like on the Division I level? It's been awhile since he played. </p>

<p>Johnson: We are going to coach Corey the same way we coach everybody over there. </p>

<p>Wagner: He's like a freshman in essence </p>

<p>Johnson: Corey has played football. It's not like he's never played before. He's rusty, but we will coach him and try and catch him up. It's not like we are going to have two coaches coaching Corey every day and not worry about everybody else. He will go through the drills just like everybody else. I watched him today and I couldn't tell any difference between him and everybody else over there. It's not like he's lost. </p>

<p>Socci: What do you expect out of Jesse Iwuji this year? </p>

<p>Johnson: We'll see. He hasn't played yet. He's a good athlete and he runs well. He started to come on late in the fall last year and we will see how he plays. We are going to find out a lot about a lot of kids this spring when we put the pads on and start playing. We are going to find out who is looking to get down with it and who is looking for a place to hide. </p>

<p>Masisak: Is there any chance that Brian Hampton could play next year? </p>

<p>Johnson: I don't think so. </p>

<p>Masisak: Was there any scenario where he could have played next year? </p>

<p>Johnson: If he hadn't graduated we could have probably gotten him another year, but academically he was finishing school. NCAA wise he has another year, but the way the Academy works if you are finished academically they are going to commission you and send you to the fleet and Brian has never had any problems academically.</p>

<p>Wallace and Daratsos Earn Patriot League Honors</p>

<p>CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) and newcomer Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.) have been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Both players are first-time recipients of the league's weekly awards.</p>

<p>Wallace scored four goals and added an assist in Navy's two Patriot League wins last week over Colgate and 16th-ranked Bucknell. Additionally, he was sensational at the face-off "x" where he won 21 of the 27 draws he took, including 8-for-8 against Bucknell. After scoring one goal 14 different times during his four-year career, Wallace produced his first multi-goal game, scoring a team-high tying four goals in the Colgate win. He generated the offensive from the face-off where he claimed 13 of the 19 draws and picked up a season-best 10 ground balls. Wallace followed up Wednesday's effort by feeding teammate Bruce Nechanicky (Montgomery Village, Md.) the pass that put the Midshipmen up 3-0 on the Bucknell early in the opening quarter. After winning all eight of his draws, he has now won 26 of the 28 face-offs (.929) he has taken in four games against the Bison.</p>

<p>Wallace is sixth on the team with nine points on six goals and three assists. Seven of his nine points have come against Patriot League opponents, including all six of his goals. He owns a .722 face-off (57-79) percentage overall and is nearly 80 percent against conference foes (.796, 43-54). With his eight face-off wins at Bucknell, Wallace took sole possession of second on Navy's career face-off wins list with 266. He also moved into 14th place on the Mids' single-season face-off wins list with 57.</p>

<p>Daratsos, who is the Mids' first rookie of the week since Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) earned the award in 2005, enjoyed one of his most successful days in a Navy uniform when he punched in a career-high four goals against Colgate. He scored back-to-back goals just 1:14 apart, including his first strike just 14 seconds into the game. The four goals scored by Daratsos and Wallace are the most by a Navy player since Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) found the back of the net four times against Army in last year's Star Game. Additionally, it's the most goals by a Navy freshman since All-American Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) scored four goals and added three assists in a 10-6 win at Stony Brook on March 22, 2003.</p>

<p>The Midshipmen will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Washington D.C. to square off against seventh-ranked Georgetown. The game has been moved up to 1:00 pm and will be televised tape-delayed by MASN immediately following the Nationals-Orioles baseball game at approximately 4:30 pm. The Mids, who received two of the 14 first-place votes in the media poll, leap-frogged over Albany and into third.</p>

Albany (6-0) is the No. 2 team in the coaches poll, followed by Virginia (7-1), Navy and Duke (6-2), while Virginia's win over Johns Hopkins (4-2) pushed it into the No. 2 spot in the media poll, followed by Navy, Albany and Johns Hopkins.</p>

<p>Game Preview
• One of only three unbeaten teams in the country, fourth-ranked Navy (8-0 overall, 5-0 Patriot League) travels to Washington D.C. Saturday's game is slated for a 1:00 pm face-off at the Multi-Sport Field.
• The Midshipmen are coming off a pair of emotional victories from last week, defeating Colgate (15-10) and No. 16 Bucknell (6-3) ... the Raiders were the lone team to defeat Navy in conference play a year ago, while the Bison upset the Mids in Lewisburg in 2005 ... senior Ian Dingman paced Navy with six goals and one assist, while face-off specialist/midfielder William Wallace pitched in four goals and one assist, while winning 21 of the 27 draws he took.
• Georgetown has wins over nationally-ranked Maryland and Delaware, while dropping games to Syracuse and Duke ... the Hoyas were outscored 5-1 in the second half of last Saturday's 6-4 loss to Duke.
• Saturday's contest will air live on 1430 WNAV and 1050 WFED with Pete Medhurst calling the action ... additionally, MASN will televise the game tape delayed (approximately 4:30 pm) immediately following the Washington Nationals-Baltimore Orioles exhibition game ... 2006 Div. I Player of the Year and Virginia graduate Matt Ward and Leif Elsmo will call the action.</p>

<p>Talking Points
• Navy (8-0) is off to the program's best start since 1986 when the Mids opened the year 8-0 ... the last Navy team to open its season 9-0 was the 1965 team that won the National Championship after producing the program's last undefeated season at 12-0.
• Navy is one of only three unbeaten teams in the country - Cornell (6-0) and Albany (7-0) are the others.
• Georgetown ended Navy's season last spring by posting a 9-7 victory over the Mids in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Washington D.C. ... the Hoyas have won three in a row against the Midshipmen.
• Only five players on Navy's roster have produced points against Georgetown, four of the five have scored goals - Dingman 7-1-8, Mirabito 3-3-6, Looney 2-1-3, Wallin 1-0-1, Wallace 0-1-1.
• Junior attack Nick Mirabito has scored a goal or dealt out an assist in all 39 games in which he has played ... it's the second-longest active streak in Div. I lax.
• A Navy player has produced a hat trick in each of its eight contests this season - Ian Dingman 5x, Nick Mirabito 3x, Billy Looney 2x, Basil Daratsos 1x, Bruce Nechanicky 1x, William Wallace 1x.
• Navy's defense is ranked No. 1 in the country, giving up 5.00 goals per game ... the Mids have given up double-figure goals just twice (Army in '06, Colgate in '07) in its last 23 games and four times in the last 39 contests.
• Ian Dingman's 167 points are the most by a Navy player since four-time All-American Mike Herger produced 197 points between 1987-90.</p>

<p>A Win over Georgetown Would...
• extend Navy's winning streak nine in a row, the longest in Div. I men's lacrosse this year.
• give Navy a 9-0 record for the first time since 1965.
• push Navy's record to 3-0 against ranked teams in '07.
• give the Mids their second win over a top-10 ranked team this spring.
• snap a three-game losing streak to the Hoyas.</p>

<p>Navy vs. Georgetown - The Series
• Georgetown owns an 11-6 series advantage over the Mids, including three-straight wins.
• The Mids have won just twice in eight trips to Washington D.C., including a 7-5 victory in 2004.
• The Hoyas bounced the Mids from the NCAA Tournament a year ago, coming from behind to deal Navy a 9-7 loss in the first round.
• Only five players on Navy's roster have produced points against Georgetown, four of the five have scored goals - Dingman 7-1-8, Mirabito 3-3-6, Looney 2-1-3, Wallin 1-0-1, Wallace 0-1-1.
• The winner of Saturday's game will be awarded a trophy in memory of longtime official Scott Boyle who tragically died on the field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on April 2, 2005 ... last year, Scott's widow, Becky, and children, Kelly and Scott, presented Georgetown with the trophy.
• Georgetown rookie attack Ricky Mirabito is the brother of Navy junior attack Nick Mirabito ... the younger Mirabito is expected to redshirt.</p>

<p>Recapping Last Year's Meeting
• Eighth-seeded Georgetown outscored Navy, 7-3, in the second half and rallied for a 9-7 NCAA first-round victory on a rain-soaked Mother's Day in Washington, D.C.
• Navy dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Hoyas, 3-0, in the first five minutes of the contest ... Jon Birsner scored three points and Ian Dingman added a pair to lead Navy to its fast start ... the key, however, may have been the play of face-off specialist William Wallace, who was four-of-four at the "X" and led a breakaway that resulted in Navy's third goal of the contest.
• Navy's clearing game continued to hurt the Mids as back-to-back failed clears led to a pair of Georgetown goals early in the second quarter ... the Hoyas scored nearly identical goals in the first five minutes of the stanza to cut the Navy lead to 3-2 with 9:42 to play in a Jake Samperton netter.
• After a 30-minute lightning delay, Navy regained its momentum, as Steve Looney, playing in his first game in a month, got a step on his defender and found Dingman alone in front for a 4-2 advantage.
• Georgetown tied the game on a pair of unassisted goals, the latter coming on a Brendan Cannon tally at 7:30 in the third ... just five seconds later, Wallace won a clean face-off and fed Dingman, who then sniped a low shot from eight yards out and a 5-4 Navy advantage.
• The Hoyas scored the next two goals to take their first lead of the day at 6-5 with 1:19 to play on a Dave Paolisso goal ... moments later, Navy's Nick Mirabito tied the game after his defender slipped, giving him room in the left slot.
• A minute into the fourth quarter, Paolisso gave the Hoyas a 7-6 lead, as his low shot through a screen beat Russell.
• Navy tied the game at 7-7 (third tie of second half) when Billy Looney scored on the EMO with 13:24 to play.
• Georgetown's Andrew Baird gave the Hoyas a one-goal lead at 8-7 with 6:25 to play ... the Hoyas their lead to two when Matt McBride scored just his sixth goal of the year with 4:39 to play and a 9-7 Hoyas win.</p>

<p>Start Me Up
• Navy is off to the program's best start since 1986 when the Mids opened the year 8-0 ... it's just the second time in the last 42 years that a Navy team has opened the season 8-0.
• The last Navy team to open its season 9-0 was the 1965 team that won the National Championship after producing the program's last undefeated season at 12-0.
• Navy is one of just three teams (of 56) that is unbeaten in '07 ... joining the Midshipmen are No. 1-ranked Cornell and second-ranked Albany who both own 6-0 records.
• Navy's eight wins this spring lead the country with Virginia, Albany, Maryland and Bucknell each winning seven contests.
• The Mids' eight-game winning streak is the longest in the country ... Virginia and Albany have won seven in a row, while Cornell has won six straight.</p>

<p>Navy Enjoys Recent Success
• Navy has enjoyed success over the last four seasons that few schools nationally have experienced ... since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has put together a 46-11 record (.807).
• The 46 wins are the most in the country and the .807 winning percentage is second only to Johns Hopkins (42-9, .824).
• For only the second time in program history and the first time since 1975-78, the Mids have strung together double-figure wins in three-straight years (15 in 2004, 12 in 2005, 11 in 2006).
• The Mids have made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last three years ... it's the first time since former head coach Bryan Matthews led Navy to the national tournament in 1992-94 ... the last time the Mids earned four-consecutive NCAA Tournament berths was in 1986-89.</p>

<p>A Game of Streaks
• Navy junior attack Nick Mirabito owns the nation's second-longest consecutive games with a point streak ... he has produced a goal or an assist in every game in which he has played, a run of 39-straight contests.
• Canisius' Kevin Ross is atop the list having scored in 40-straight games.
• At least one Navy player has scored three goals in each of the last nine games dating back to last year's NCAA Tournament match-up against Georgetown ... senior Ian Dingman has recorded a hat trick in six of those those games.
• The Mids have held six of their eight opponents to five or fewer goals this season, including a three-goal output by nationally-ranked Bucknell last Sunday ... dating back to 2003, Navy has won 27-straight games when holding its foes to five or fewer goals.
• Navy has held the lead at halftime in every game this season ... the Mids have lost 12 in a row when trailing at the break and 56 straight when trailing after three quarters of play.</p>

<p>A Closer Look at National Exposure
• Since the start of 2004, Navy has been on television 19 times (7 appearances in '04, 6 in '05 and '06).
• The Mids own an overall record of 10-9 when their games are televised ... Navy is 6-4 on CSTV all-time and 4-4 on the ESPN family of networks ... the Mids are also 0-1 on Time-Warner sports.
• The Midshipmen own a 36-2 record in games that have not been televised since the start of 2004.
• Navy is slated to make four regular-season television appearances in '07 ... Navy partner CSTV will carry the Maryland and Army games set for back-to-back weekends (4/6, 4/14) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ... MASN will air the Georgetown (3/31) contest, while Johns Hopkins (4/21) will be carried on ESPNU.</p>

<p>Dingman Among Nation's Best
• Senior All-American attack Ian Dingman entered his senior campaign just four points shy of reaching the 150-point plateau for his career ... it took him just two games (second goal of three-goal afternoon at Lafayette) to produce the four goals he needed to become only the eighth player in school history to achieve the feat.
• A week later against No. 5 North Carolina, he registered his second hat trick of the year and became the fifth player in program history to score 100 goals.
• Dingman is only the third player in Navy's history to score 100 goals and deal out 50 assists ... with 111 goals and 56 assists, he joins Hall of Famer Mike Buzzell (111G, 111A) and four-time All-American Mike Herger (107G, 90A).
• With three goals on Sunday against Bucknell, Navy senior Ian Dingman moved into a tie with Turnbull Award winner and Hall of Famer Mike Buzzell (1977-80) for second on Navy's career goals list with 111 ... Dingman is a distant 32 goals away from James Chambers who scored a record-setting 143 goals between 1946-49.
• Dingman is just two points shy of Navy's top-five career scorers ... with 167 points, Dingman trails three-time Turnbull Award winner and Hall of Famer Jimmy Lewis who amassed 169 points from 1964-66.
• Dingman is tied with Shannon Heyward (1955-97) for 11th on the career assists list with 56.
• Dingman stands third among the nation's active players with his 111 goals and fourth with 167 points.
• He has produced 44 multi-point games during his career, as well as 36 multi-goal performances and 20-career hat tricks ... he has produced two or more assists 17 times during his career.</p>

<p>Tough "D"
• Since 2000, Navy's defense has been ranked No. 1 in the country three times, including each of the last two seasons ... heading into Saturday's game at Georgetown, the Mids are locked up with arch rival Army as the nation's stingiest defense, giving up 5.00 goals per game.
• Senior keeper Colin Finnegan is ranked No. 2 in the country in save percentage (.684).
• Navy has held 26 of its last 57 opponents to five or fewer goals, and only seven foes (Ohio State '04, Army '04, Syracuse '04, Georgetown '05, Virginia '05, Army '06 and Colgate '07) have managed to reach double figures.
• Since 2004, Navy has held 28 of its 57 opponents to 25 or fewer shots ... during that time frame, Navy is 26-2 (Ohio State 2004, Colgate 2006) when holding its foes to under 25 shots.
• Navy has lost just six games when holding foes to nine or fewer goals since 2004, posting a 39-6 mark ... two of the losses came in overtime during the 2005 campaign (Bucknell and Johns Hopkins), and the losses in '06 were to Colgate, Georgetown (twice) and Johns Hopkins.</p>

<p>Face-Off Facts
• Navy is ranked No. 4 in the country in face-off percentage, winning 62.5 percent (100-160) of its draws this spring ... Delaware is pacing the nation (.778).
• Senior face-off specialist William Wallace is ranked No. 2 in the country, winning 57 of his 79 draws (.722) ... he trails Delaware standout Alex Smith (.793) who is just under 80 percent.
• Wallace is coming off an 8-for-8 performance against Bucknell last Sunday ... during his career, he has won 26 of 28 draws against the Bison.
• With his eight face-off wins at Bucknell, Wallace took sole possession of second on Navy's career face-off wins list with 266 ... he trails all-time leader Chris Pieczonka (2002-05, 363 wins) by just under 100 wins.
• He also moved into 14th place on the Mids' single-season face-off wins list with 57 ... he is less than 20 wins away from entering the top 10.
• Wallace stands third on the Mids' career ground balls list, needing just 12 to tie former teammate and All-American Steve Looney (2003-06) for second.</p>

<p>Plebe Power
• Freshman Basil Daratsos has started all eight games for the Midshipmen as a member of the midfield.
• He owns 10 points on nine goals and one assist and is the team's fifth-leading scorer ... he has turned in a goal or an assist in six of the eight games.
• Daratsos was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday after producing a career-high four goals in Navy's win over Colgate ... he is Navy's first rookie of the week since Nick Mirabito in 2005.
• The four goals scored by Daratsos and William Wallace against Colgate are the most by a Navy player since last year's Star Game against Army when Billy Looney scored four times ... it's also the first time since the 2004 Navy-Colgate encounter that two Midshipmen have registered at least four goals in a game.
• It's the most goals by a Navy freshman since Ian Dingman scored four goals and added three assists in a 10-6 win at Stony Brook on March 22, 2003.</p>

<p>Family Tradition
• Navy has one set of brothers on the team (Bobby and Joe Lennon) and a father-son combination (Ray and Colin Finnegan).
• Additionally, five current Midshipmen have brothers who were previously members of Navy's lacrosse team.

<p>The most exciting team in Division I makes its competitive debut this weekend...
Navy travels to Washington...</p>

<p>There are two lacrosse seasons. There's the one before April 1st, when the Patriot League plays, and the one that begins the first weekend in April, when Navy comes out of its long winter cocoon and starts breaking attendance records--as it will this weekend when Georgetown's Multi Sport Field's all-time high crowd count will fall.</p>

<p>How do the Mids do it? It's easy for a team that can beat Princeton, Maryland, and Georgetown and still lose to Air Force.</p>

<p>When Navy hits the field you just never know what will happen.</p>

<p>Several years ago, Navy held Georgetown to four goals--and lost--in overtime.</p>

<p>Then there was the time that, against Princeton, Midshipman Graham Gill blew a shot on an open goal, giving the Tigers new life. That bit of mania was conducted in front of a crowd of 45,000 on national television during the Final Four. The Mids pulled out a characteristic one goal victory.</p>

<p>One of the most exciting features for Navy fans is that the Midshipmen are loathe to win against competitive teams too early in the game. Charitably, if they get too far ahead, the Mids always manage to let the competition catch up.</p>

<p>The year following Navy's championship appearance, Gill was to squeeze a goal into a space so tight it sucked the wind out of a home crowd of 14,000. It was scored with two minutes left on the clock--after Navy had blown a three goal fourth quarter lead over Maryland. Gill's tally tied the contest and, just as the fans were gearing up for overtime--with nine seconds left on the clock--Gill threaded his way through two defenders to register the game winner.</p>

<p>Then there was the North Carolina series. In the five year period between 1999-2003, every Navy-North Carolina game was decided by a single goal. That series saw three overtime games in a row, and a total of 12 overtime periods in four years--including the longest Division I game ever played--six overtimes.</p>

<p>The 2004 Final Four was played in Baltimore with Syracuse, Hopkins, Princeton, and Navy. Who doesn't belong in that crowd?</p>

<p>All of those teams had a Tewaaraton candidate--except for Navy.</p>

<p>Each of those teams had more than one consensus pre-season first-team All-Americans--except Navy, which did not even have a consensus second or third team All-American.</p>

<p>The pre-season rankings of the Final Four teams were: #2, #3, #4, and #18.</p>

<p>The team that eventually reached the Championship Game was led by Graham Gill, who attended a high school that did not have a lacrosse team. It featured an outside shooter from Memphis, Tennessee, and players from Dallas, Texas, and Donnelly, Idaho. It's goalie was a first year starter, and one of its best long poles had begun the season in goal.</p>

<p>Of course, this year's Navy team is completely different.</p>

<p>It's goalie is a first year starting player who leads Division I in save percentage, and it's top face-off man (.722) is from Cranbrook, Michigan. Neither were picked by anyone to be All-Americans.</p>

<p>But you had better be strapped into your seats when Navy plays.</p>

<p>Division I has a lot of good lacrosse teams. But only one Navy.</p>

<ol>
<li>Navy (#4) at Georgetown (unranked)--(Saturday, March 31, 1:00 PM, Washington, DC)--DELAYED TV GAME--With North Carolina once again falling off the radar screens, and with Maryland struggling, Navy must win at Georgetown or beat Hopkins at Homewood Field if it wants an at-large invitation and/or respectable seeding in the NCAA Tournament. The easier of those options presents itself next Saturday in Washington. With their only notable win over schizophrenic North Carolina, the 2007 Mids are largely an unknown quantity. Georgetown will not wait to test Navy. The Hoya defense held an attack led by Matt Danowski and Zack Greer to a total of six goals. But the Mids' defense leads Division I. The key to this game is which Navy offense will show up? The one that scored 19 against North Carolina, or the one that scored six goals against Bucknell? The Swami likes Navy, but if the offense doesn't show up, the defense will have to play its best game of its 2007 campaign.</li>

Rob Dubas, a midfielder on the Georgetown men's lacrosse team, has no goals and no assists this season. Yet he could play a crucial role when the seventh-ranked Hoyas play No. 4 Navy today at Multi-Sport Field at 1 p.m.</p>

<p>It is likely that Dubas will be the main faceoff man for the Hoyas (4-2). Starter Christiaan Trunz is questionable with an unspecified injury; he did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, Coach Dave Urick said....

<p>No. 7 Georgetown Hands No. 4 Navy Men's Lacrosse its First Loss</p>

<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. - Seventh-ranked Georgetown (5-2) scored six second-half goals, including five in the third quarter, to come from behind and defeat the fourth-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team (8-1), 10-9, Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field on the campus of Georgetown. The Hoyas have now won four in a row against the Midshipmen, while Navy suffered just its first loss of the year, snapping an eight-game winning streak.</p>

<p>"We didn't play well enough to win," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "I'm disappointed because I don't think we played our best today. Our guys fought, we hustled, we gave a great effort, but it was not our smartest game of the year."</p>

<p>Navy had the hot hand early as senior All-American midfielder Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) fired off a shot from eight yards out on the left side, rippling the lower right of the net just 33 seconds into the contest. The Mids tacked on a second goal three minutes later when Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) picked up a loose ball and poked it past Georgetown keeper Miles Kass.</p>

<p>Rookie Scott Kocis got the Hoyas on the scoreboard when he attacked to the right, but came back to shoot from his left over Navy keeper Colin Finnegan's (Arnold, Md.) shoulder at the 5:35 mark.</p>

<p>Navy, though, took momentum into the second quarter when senior midfielder Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) curled around the right side of the cage and scored his second-collegiate goal against the Hoyas to give Navy a 3-1 lead.</p>

<p>The Hoyas narrowed the lead to one when All-American Brendan Cannon fed Craig Dowd six minutes into the second stanza.</p>

<p>On the ensuing face-off, Georgetown made an attempt to clear the ball from the defensive end of the field, however, Looney intercepted the pass and quickly threw the ball to Dingman. Kass came out of the goal to challenge Dingman, who faked and then tucked the ball in for a 4-2 lead. The Mids pushed their lead to 5-2 with 5:15 remaining in the half when Looney found on open Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) at the crease who stuck the ball over Kass' shoulder. Mirabito has now scored a goal or dealt out an assist in 40-straight games, the second-longest scoring streak in Div. I men's lax.</p>

<p>Georgetown staged a run at the end of the first half as second-year attack Jake Samperton stuck in a pair of goals to trim the Mids' lead to just one, 5-4, at intermission.</p>

<p>The Hoyas wasted little time in evening the score, as Garrett Wilson scored on an unassisted strike just over a minute into the third quarter. Navy, though, answered when Looney came running up the left side of the field, stopped and fired off a shot from his right foot to give Navy a one-goal edge, 6-5.</p>

<p>Cannon stepped up his game in the second half, scoring all three of his team-high goals, including back-to-back strikes just 22 seconds apart in the third to give the Hoyas their first lead of the game with 11:27 left in the third period. Dingman answered less than a minute later, as Mirabito fed him at the crease to tie the game.</p>

<p>Georgetown again staged a run, scoring a pair of goals, both set up by Cannon passes, to take a 9-7 lead at the end of three periods.</p>

<p>Dingman fired in his team-best fourth goal of the game when he scooped up a loose ball and fired it into the left corner of the net. With a one-goal lead, Cannon once again attacked the crease, but no Navy player slid and Cannon bullied his way in to give the Hoyas a two-goal margin with 7:41 to go.</p>

<p>"I thought Brendan Cannon played tremendous," said Meade. "He just made great plays in the second half."</p>

<p>With time running down, the Mids pulled to within one as freshman Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.) scored his first-collegiate goal against the Hoyas with just 25 seconds left. </p>

<p>Navy face a must-win situation on the ensuing face-off. Senior William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) won the draw and fed junior midfielder Terence Higgins (Chappaqua, N.Y.), who had a great look at the goal, shooting within seven or eight yards, but Kass came up with a big save to preserve the Georgetown win.</p>

<p>Navy has traditionally struggled to clear the ball against the Hoyas, so it should come as no surprise that once again, the Mids had their hands full. Navy converted just 18 of its 32 clears, including three of nine in the second quarter.</p>

<p>"We made a lot of mistakes in our clearing game today," added Meade. "I think there were probably three goals in the first half by Georgetown that were directly a result of or inability to clear the ball. We had guys open, but we just didn't throw them the ball."</p>

<p>Neither team converted an extra-man opportunity, as Georgetown was 0 for 5 and the Mids were 0 for 2.</p>

<p>Navy will be back in action on Friday when it plays host to 10th-ranked Maryland at Navy-Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium in a game sponsored by Comcast. Game time is set for 7:00 pm and will be televised live by CSTV with Paul Carcaterra and Jason Chandler calling the action and Sheehan Stanwick Burch serving as the sideline reporter. The Voice of Navy Lacrosse Pete Medhurst will call the game on 1430 WNAV.</p>

The winner of the men's lacrosse game between No. 7 Georgetown and No. 4 Navy yesterday received the Scott Boyle Trophy, a silver cup named for the referee who collapsed and died during the Georgetown-Navy game in 2005.</p>

<p>Yet it was apparent from the opening whistle there was quite a bit else at stake for both teams. In the end, Georgetown junior goalkeeper Miles Kass saved a low, seven-yard shot from junior Terence Higgins with 15 seconds left to preserve a tense, hard-hitting 10-9 victory before 3,079 at Multi Sport Field....

Anxiety and enthusiasm bounded up and down both sidelines prior to the Navy-Georgetown men's lacrosse game Saturday. </p>

<p>Riding an 8-0 record to start the 2007 campaign as one of only three undefeated teams in the country, the Midshipmen brought a raucous and faithful contingent to Georgetown's sun-drenched Hilltop campus. It was a campus that may not have been as focused on the 1 p.m. face-off with the Mids as it was the 6:07 p.m. tip-off with Ohio State....

<p>Recapping Last Year's Meeting
• Attack Ian Dingman scored three goals, including a strike with eight seconds remaining to lead No. 11 Navy to a 7-6 victory over fourth-ranked Maryland at Byrd Stadium.
• Another in a long line of one-goal games between the two teams, Maryland was forced to climb back from a 5-1 halftime deficit as the Mids capitalized on the Terps' mistakes. • Navy scored four-consecutive goals between the first and second quarters with the latter three all on extra-man opportunities.
• Navy opened the door early in the second half as Xander Ritz faked Navy keeper Matt Russell both directions before sticking in an extra-man score ... 30 seconds later, Bill McGlone fought through a trio of Mids to find the goal from two yards out to narrow Navy's lead.
• The Mids briefly interrupted Maryland's momentum when sophomore Terence Higgins faked his defender, switched hands and fired a bullet from the left side to give Navy a 6-3 lead with 5:48 left in the third quarter.
• Second-line midfielder Dan Groot and McGlone hooked up in last minute of the third quarter to get the Terps to within two heading into the final period.
• An errant pass by Dingman just minutes into the fourth quarter was scooped up by pole Ryan Clarke who connected with Max Ritz in transition and subsequently scored the Terps' fifth goal.
• Maryland knotted the game with 3:22 to go when Walters pocketed his second goal of the game on a shot from seven yards out on the right side.
• The Terps won the ensuing face-off, but were unable to put the ball into the net ... Navy's short stick midfielders Ward Hackett and Geoff Leone fought off Maryland's attack to pick up the ground ball and head to the offensive side of the field. After a shot failed to meet its mark, Navy had time to set up a final play.
• Co-captain Jon Birsner set up behind the goal and found Dingman planted five yards out to the right of the goal ... Dingman went right, but was forced to roll left with his shot sailing between keeper Jason Carter's legs with just eight seconds left.
• Starting Terrapin keeper Harry Alford was pulled at the 8:16 mark in the opening half and replaced him with Carter who stopped seven shots for the Terps.</p>

<p>Friday Night Lights
• Navy owns a 17-7 record, including 10-consecutive wins, when playing at home under the lights ... the Mids claimed their 10th-straight win when they crushed fifth-ranked North Carolina, 19-8, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on March 2.

<p>National Noise
• Navy is ranked among the top 10 in six statistical categories and the top 5 in three.
• The Mids are No. 2 in the country with their smothering defense, giving up 5.56 goals per game ... Navy has given up just one more goal than arch rival Army, who leads the nation at 5.44 goals per game.
• Navy is one of four teams in the country to own a scoring margin of +5.0 or more ... Navy ranked third with its +5.78 scoring margin, while Cornell is atop the list with a +8.57 margin of victory.
• The Mids are also ranked in the following categories: win percentage (3rd), face-off win percentage (6th), scoring offense (7th) and man-up defense (9th).</p>

<p>Dingman Among Nation's Best
• It took senior All-American attack Ian Dingman just two games (second goal of three-goal afternoon at Lafayette) to produce the four goals he needed to become only the eighth player in school history to reach the 150-point plateau.
• A week later against No. 5 North Carolina, he registered his second hat trick of the year and became the fifth player in program history to score 100 goals.
• Dingman is only the third player in Navy's history to score 100 goals and deal out 50 assists ... with 115 goals and 56 assists, he joins Hall of Famer Mike Buzzell (111G, 111A) and four-time All-American Mike Herger (107G, 90A).

The significance of the season-ending knee injury to sophomore Bruce Nechanicky, a starting attackman for the Navy lacrosse team, can be measured in how many players it will take to replace him against No. 11 Maryland tonight at 7 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.</p>

<p>Junior Matt Guido (five goals, two assists), freshmen Tim Paul (three goals, two assists) and Patrick Moran (two goals), senior David Cohn and possibly senior midfielder Billy Looney (11 goals, 10 assists) will play on attack in Nechanicky's spot for the sixth-ranked Midshipmen (8-1)....

Long before he finally got to guard the net, before he began to make the most of his one and only chance with the Navy men's lacrosse team, senior goalie Colin Finnegan won over his coaches and teammates with toughness and patience rarely seen by outsiders.</p>

<p>For three years, while Matt Russell anchored the defense as a perennial All-American, Finnegan was the talented backup making his way behind the scenes at practice. He never considered changing positions, as former player Seth DiNola did once Russell took over early in the 2004 season. He only thought about staying on Russell's heels and getting better every day....
