Navy Squash to Face a Pair of Nationally-Ranked Foes

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After taking the month of December off, the 10th-ranked Navy squash team returns to action this week against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents. The 10-2 Midshipmen will travel to fourth-ranked Penn on Wednesday in a 5:00 pm showdown before returning to Annapolis to play host to No. 8 Williams on Sunday at 11:00 am at Halsey Field House.

Penn, who like Navy has been off since early December, enters Wednesday's matchup boasting a 3-0 record, turning in wins over No. 9 Cornell (9-0), No. 5 Yale (6-3) and No. 12 Brown (9-0). Five of the Quakers' nine players are ranked among the top 50, including senior All-American Gilly Lane, who owns a 3-0 record as the No. 1 player on the ladder and who is ranked No. 5 in the College Squash Association rankings. Lane was a teammate of Navy junior captain Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) at the 2006 World University Squash Championship held in August in Hungary. Junior Lee Rosen is ranked No. 16 by the CSA with the No. 2 player also owning a 3-0 record.

Williams owns a 2-3 record this season, defeating No. 15 Tufts (9-0) and No. 14 Bowdoin (9-0). All three of the Ephs' losses have been to the top-three teams in the country - Trinity (9-0), Princeton (8-1) and Harvard (9-0). Williams will play a difficult schedule leading into its contest in Annapolis on Sunday, as the Ephs play host to fifth-ranked Yale on Friday at 5:00 pm, before traveling to Philadelphia to battle No. 4 Penn on Saturday. The Ephs' top-two players are senior William Walter and junior Jon Barry who are each ranked among the top 50 players in the country.

Navy is off to one of its best starts in recent memory, winning eight-consecutive matches before stumbling against No. 7 Dartmouth (6-3) and two matches later, it fell to top-ranked Trinity (9-0). The Mids closed out the first half of their schedule by claiming a 5-4 win over then 10th-ranked Amherst on the road, Navy's first win over the Lord Jeffs since its 7-2 victory on Dec. 4, 1991. Over the weekend, the Mids earned a pair of exhibition wins over The Lawrenceville School (6-3) and the Cynwyd Club (8-1).

Four of Navy's players are ranked among the top 100, including George, who owns a 7-1 record as the Mids' No. 1 player on the ladder. Also ranked among the top 100 are junior No. 4 player Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.), who is 8-1 and ranked 75th, freshman No. 2 player Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.), who is 8-3 and ranked 78th and sophomore No. 3 player Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.), who is off to an 8-3 start and is ranked No. 97.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The fourth-ranked Penn squash team shut out No. 10 Navy, 9-0, Wednesday evening at Ringe Courts in Philadelphia. It marks just the third loss for the Midshipmen this season and only the fourth shutout by a Navy opponent in the last 40 matches.

"We got thumped pretty good tonight and we found out why Penn is the fourth-ranked team in the country," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We played well in spots, but we never could get ahead in any one individual match to get the momentum going on our side."

Junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) was the lone Navy player to push his foe to a fourth game. Ranked No. 75 in the country, Sawin blanked 25th-ranked Ben Ende in the third game of the No. 4 flight, but Ende ended the match with a 9-3 triumph in the fourth game.

Sophomores Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) both put up solid scores, pushing their opponents, but were never able to steal a game. Smith dropped a 9-5, 9-5, 9-6 decision to 23rd-ranked Mark Froot at No. 3, while Chris Thompson handed Zipf a 9-7, 9-4, 9-5 setback at the No. 7 spot.

Gilly Lane, the fifth-ranked player in the country, got the best of Navy's Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.), ranked #38 at the No. 1 flight. The two were teammates last fall when the duo helped represent the United States and the World University Squash Championship in Hungary. Lane defeated George, 9-1, 9-2, 9-6.

The Mids return to action Sunday when they play host to Williams College at Halsey Field House beginning at 11:00 am.
