Colorado School of Mines, should I even bother?

Hello,

I am a current community college student. I am working towards transferring to a four year school in order to major in Petroleum Engineering. At this point I have guaranteed admission to Texas Tech and Montana Tech. Yet, there is nothing more that I would like, than to attend Mines. However, I am not sure if I am a viable candidate for Mines. I did very poorly in HS, it's a long story. The jist of it being that I ended up with a 2.5 weighted GPA.

Well, like I said, I am currently attending CC trying to dig myself out of this hole. After two semesters (summer + fall) in the books, my GPA is, 3.6. So far I have taken Calc I/II, Chem I/II, University Physics I, Eng 101, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics. This semester I am taking Calc III, University Physics II, Intro to Geology, and English 102. 2280 SAT. I’m not sure how important 'hooks' are to Mines, but I am a first generation American and the first in the family to attend college.

So with this said, should I even bother applying? I recently read through 'Fiske Guide to Colleges' where it noted that Mines is a, 'easy to get into' school, with a acceptance rate of 66%. Yet everything I have found online suggest the exact opposite. I have turned to College Confidential for some opinions/advice on the matter. I know for a fact that there are a few Mines graduates and current students on here, hopefully they will also chime in.

Thank you!

What will your GPA be after this semester?

I think you should be fine getting in as a transfer student. I transferred in and they didn’t even want to look at my high school transcript, they just wanted it as proof I graduated.

Hey noleguy,

I knew I had seen some Mines students here! As far as my GPA this semester, so far I am tracking As across the board. Worst case scenario, I drop to a B in either Calc III or Uni Physics. I am confident that I will finish with, at worst, a 3.5. Here hoping for a 4.0 however.

I transferred in with ~3.2, you should be fine. Their transfer admissions team is great, and extremely helpful.

On this page:

They say that a 2.75 college GPA with a recommended set of courses is needed at the minimum (presumably, starting in more advanced courses in subjects like math is accepted). However, the common data set indicates that only about 22% of transfer applicants were admitted for 2011-2012, so the threshold could be significantly higher than the minimum qualification.

Most schools don’t care about your high school grades. You can even transfer to top schools with a GED if you have excellent college performance.
