Columbia 09er here to answer questions!

It's not the science I have a problem with; it's the engineering.

Um, I guess what I'm trying to ask is, will a science major better prepare you for med school? (I'll probably do Bio or something anyway because I like it but does it have that added perk?)

Engineering is basically a lot of math and problem solving, based on the scientific concepts/principles. If you hated physics, then BME might not be the best thing for you.

As for preparation for med school, it totally doesn't matter. I'm not a doctor/med student, but my friends who went that direction find med school to be pretty self-contained. From day 1, they spoon-feed you everything that you need to know. Plenty of people in med school will not have taken courses like molecular bio, genetics, etc., whether they were physics majors or english majors. The science major will probably teach you how to think, but it is debatable whether thinking (versus memorizing) is valued in med school.

hehe, exactly. Math is er, not my strong suit. Pretty much ditto with physics. Yuck, definitely not my area of interest at all. Anything, anything else.

Spoon-feeding I can deal with, same with memorization although I've begun to take a liking to thinking the past couple of years that we've actually be required to think.

Hi!
I was wondering how the "party scene" is at Columbia. I'm not really a partier, but it's always something good to consider, right?

campus-wise you could go to the frat house on like 114th but people mostly go out in the city to "party"

Back for another question;

I've heard that some of the dorms at Columbia are great while others aren't. Which ones are good and how many are good compared to bad? (I know it'll most likely be moot facing an 11% acceptance rate but I can't help daydreaming)

I won't bore you with names. But freshman year is a mixed bag (you could get lucky and get a great single, but generally you get an OK single or a decent double). Soph. year is generally a pretty good double or a horrible single. Junior year ranges from an awesome single to a pretty good single, with a few people getting horrible singles. Senior year is mostly great singles.

okay, no names for now but if I do it get in, expect me to be back by end of december (when I get over sporatic freak out fits) demanding every little detail that you could possibly describe about the place. But for now, rather than get too far into that daydream, I'm satisfied.
