Columbia 2016 ED - Input needed please.

<p>Hi all, I am still debating where to apply early between my two top choices (Georgetown and Columbia). I know both are huge reaches, but I´d like to apply early to one. I love both schools and would like to know which one would I would be most likely accepted at. I´m an incoming senior, btw. Any input would be great. :)</p>

<p>STATS:
SAT: 2080 (750 CR, 660 M, 670 W) one sitting
ACT: 32 (35 R, 27 M, 33 E, 32 S)
PSAT: 207
APs: 5 French, 3 APUSH, pending Macro, English Comp, Spanish.
GPA (unweighted): 3.74
Class rank: unranked
Awards:
- in the running for NMS (most likely will be commended)
- expecting an AP award (AP scholar, maybe better)
- Science Fair, 3rd place - Mathematics (local fair, not national...)</p>

<p>ECs:
- tutoring: 4 hours/week since 11th grade
- youth leadership team (church): 1 hour/week since 9th grade
- marching band: section leader, student marching instructor since 11th grade
- work trips: summer ´09, summer ´10 (2 weeks) - building houses, fall ´08, fall ´09, fall ´10 (weekend trips) - building houses
- volunteer at university football games (concessions) - 6 games/year since 9th grade
- leadership conference - summer ´10 (1 week) Christian-related
- translated/coauthored book (scientific, got involved after Science Fair project): since summer 2010. To be published January 10, 2012. 500 pages. I translated all of it.
- worked as a secretary to my dad: since 9th grade. about 10 hours/week, year-round.
-volunteer hours total: approximately 450 hours (more by end of summer)</p>

<p>Apply to Columbia, you are a good match applying early will increase your chances. Gorgetown should most likely be your safety in regards to your stats.</p>

<p>No, Columbia is not a match and Georgetown is not a safety. Nor is Columbia a match for anyone, nor is Georgetown a safety for anyone!</p>

<p>Right now, Columbia and Georgetown are both huge reaches for you. If you want, you can apply ED to Columbia and EA to Georgetown. I do not believe that there are any such restrictions against doing that, and it will maximize your (albeit small) chances.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, there is a restriction - Georgetown is REA, so you can’t apply ED. That said, go for what you love. I hear Columbia has a great linguistics major!</p>

<p>The two people that i have know that have applied to Georgetown had lower stats than you, they were also Hispanic.But had amazing essays</p>

<p>As for Columbia the applicant i met who got in had lower stats, was also Hispanic, yet i think another impacting hook was that she was a female that wanted to pursue engineering. She did not ever take the physics subject test which is required, but still got in</p>

<p>About SATIIs, I sent in an 800 in French, 770 in US History, and 750 in Spanish.</p>

<p>Also, I learned I was Native American (Muisca tribe, Colombia) “enough” to put it on the Common App, which I did, so I have no idea how that will play out.</p>

<p>I’m really sick of this admissions game. Realize that you’ll be spending the rest of your four years, most likely, at your university. Don’t apply ED if your heart’s not into it; don’t apply just for the boosted chances. The reason that ED is boosted is because adcoms believe that you really want to be at that school, and they’re more likely to accept kids that really have a passion for their institution. Several of my classmates regret doing Columbia ED just for the boost, and are now unhappy because they don’t want to be here. Really think about it as a life decision, and not part of the game. (This is not to the OP, but to some of the other posters).</p>

<p>That being said, here’s my analysis:
You need to get your standardized scores up. Take it up to three times and study harder every single time. Columbia will superscore you so keep that in mind. I think you’d be a good fit and I’d hate to see you get eliminated without them looking at your extra curriculars just because your test scores are low for the school. I really like your extra curriculars, and they can definitely be a shining spot if you frame them correctly and demonstrate passion. Work on those scores and make your essay extraordinary. Not as much of a reach as you think, I believe.</p>

<p>Thanks pbr, I had no idea. The Common App was pretty ambiguous about the definition of Native American. It said: Native Peoples of the Americas. So I took it that it included both N and S America. Thanks for the clarification though.</p>

<p>Cyanidic, you’ve given me some of the most insightful advice yet. Thanks a lot! Yes, my heart is set on Columbia. I already sent in my app though, but my essays were as good as they could be. I spent all summer writing them and had them revised multiple times by multiple editors. Thanks, I am definitely passionate about my ECs, and I hope Columbia sees that. I don’t think I’ll make it though, but if I do it’ll be a pleasure to join you in Morningside Heights.</p>

<p>as international student I have the equivalent of an almost perfect GPA. However my SAT 1 is 2020 and my SAT 2s I did when I was 16 so are all low 600s. I retook them and I am expecting 800 math 2 near 800 math 1 and 700 french. These are november test date do you think admissions may not even bother waiting to look, my common app only lists these as (eventual) scores.</p>

<p>On their website Columbia says they will take November as their latest date. So I’m pretty sure they’ll look at them. There’s no way you’d know what you were going to get on them and because you put them as future test dates I think they’ll plan on looking at your scores. I took physics in November (it’s required for SEAS) and so I’m pretty sure they will look at my November scores since one of my requirements is on there.</p>
