I’m attending the Columbia 3-week Immersion Summer Program for High School Students this summer. I decided to take the Introduction to Business, Finance, and Economics class (Session 2) and will be living there for 3 weeks.
Is anybody else going this Summer, maybe we could get in touch beforehand? And if you have attended the Columbia Summer Program before, what are your thoughts about it? (I have heard some very negative things about the program in general but nothing so far on the business course)
Hi @Orcmeister I was admitted into Session 2 for Trial Advocacy! I’ve heard some negative things as well and am curious about what other people who went more recently experienced. Hopefully we can get in touch beforehand I’m very excited for this program
Hey @Orcmeister I was also admitted! I’m in Session 2 for the Introduction to Neuroscience and I’m going to be living there. Let’s try to get in touch!
Hey @Orcmeister , I will be taking the same course as well at the same time! I will be living with my sister so I will have to commute everyday. Does anyone know how the program is for commuters? I’m nervous about the program since I heard that commuters are pretty secluded from residential activities.
hey, I got admitted for session 2 for explorations in genetics and molecular biology. so excited! what are the bad things you guys heard about it though? :-/
I personally read everything available (on the internet) about the program and critics usually mention the same things such as high cost, easy courses, loose rules, apathetic party students, crappy food, etc.
However there are positive reviews as well, I’m still really excited! I mean its Columbia, how bad could it be? xd
I just got accepted for the second session Theatrical Collaboration: The Actor, the Director, and the Playwright program. Does anyone know anything about it? Also, I’m going to be commuting and I’m kinda reluctant because I have read some bad things about commuter life!? Is there anyone commuting or anyone who knows more about commuter life?
Hi!! I’m doing session 1 exploration in genetics and molecular biology. Is there anyone who’s taking this class too?? oh, and is there a facebook group for 2017?
The program ended yesterday for me and I absolutely loved it. I had the most amazing time. You went to class 4 hours every day (split up to 2 hour blocks) and for some classes it was more (journalism). Other than that there was complete freedom. You can go out and do whatever you want and go anywhere you want as long as you are back by curfew. The workload for classes was doable as well. It’s just like college so there is no busy work. I had 3 papers and a moot court, but some classes had no work at all, and some had work every night.
The atmosphere was also amazing. Everybody is there to help you and your RA is one of the best resources and friends you will have. All of the RAs in general are really fun too. They all have to plan trips each week for you (optional) and they have to make it sound so much fun so they are all super fun and nice. My RA would stop and talk to me every time she saw me. Even when we were walking down the street or when we saw each other coming out of the changing rooms in soho. Definitely take advantage of as much as you can. Go on as many trips as possible and make friends so that you have someone to go with. Everyone is feeling the same way of being unsure and scared that they won’t make any friends. So put yourself out there and you will make many friends.
The food was terrible tbh. The dining hall is gross it’s bland and raw/overcooked and just a wierd selection of food. Like who eats rice collard greens and teriyaki chicken everyday? But at the same time, don’t go out to eat every meal bc it gets very expensive.
Most of the in depth reviews on this site are not representative of the program. Yes there are “parties” (hanging out in the lounge talking until 1 am), but no one hooks up and everyone does their homework. You don’t pay $11,000 to not do anything. And most people understand that this program is very expensive so they want to do well. Also my program had 18 people and most everybody I talked to had about 20 people in their program (with the exception of intro to psychology that had about 70). So my professor knew my name by the second day and she is writing a letter of recommendation for me. A lot of the people I knew including me got very close to their professor and the professors really do care about the students.
Just to wrap up, I think the program was completely worth it. I met so many amazing people from all over the world and we became so close. And I found out that law is truly what I wan to do and I explored more of New York City in 3 weeks than I would have in a lifetime. I wish so bad that I could go back, but that’s just not possible. Most of the reviews here are very outdated and the things they talk about do not fly anymore. I loved it so much and I’m sure anyone who goes will as well.
One more thing: get an umbrella and Hartley hall has free ponchos.
