I’m a finishing high school Junior, and I’m thinking about applying to Columbia University early decision. Before I fully commit, however, I was wondering if someone could give me some advice? It comes in three parts.

Does anyone have any insider information about the school? How is the faculty? What’s the student body like? I visited the campus and I really liked it, and all the research I’ve done into its programs look wonderful. I’m curious about what I can’t find on paper.

My SATs are 2300 (740 cr, 800 m, 760 w). Should I retake them, regarding Columbia’s standards? I’m a little worried about my critical reading scores…

If the idea of going to an ivy league school in one of the most happening cities in the world appeals to you, definitely apply ED to Columbia. I heavily considered going myself after being accepted, but I eventually turned it down for reasons I can’t logically explain…Pomona just felt like a better fit, but I was this close to going to Columbia after visiting it again when I was accepted. I think there are amazing academic and life experiences to be had at Columbia and in NYC though. (Just be sure you are good with the core!)

A 2300 is more than enough. I had a 2320 superscored, and I received a likely letter from Columbia. Obviously, my SAT didn’t hold me back at all…think about it…a 2300 is in the 99th+ percentile. How could that possibly be a bad thing?

2) Make sure you REALLY REALLY love New York City before deciding to go to Columbia. It’s a great school, but some people cannot handle city life.

thanks for all the help, everyone. I plan to visit more this summer to see if I really would be comfortable in NYC… I love cities, but that one feels a bit too concrete at times…

Living near NYC myself, I can say that after spending so much time near NYC, every other city I’ve been to in my life has paled in comparison. There’s just something about NYC that feels so booming, robust, and alive.
