columbia admitted student visiting weekend?

hello,

i am elated that i've been admitted to the class of 2015, but i have a question for other low-income admitted students or current columbia students regarding visiting columbia in the coming month.

i'm getting a little lost with all the websites and logins here and can't seem to find an invitation to (or any information about, for that matter) any kind of admitted student weekend at columbia. the few other schools to which i've been admitted have sent invitations to visit the schools and were gracious enough to provide financial assistance for this opportunity. my family and i cannot at present shoulder the cost of a two-way plane ticket to new york as doing so, given our current circumstances, would present a significant hardship. :[

i have never had the opportunity to visit columbia or new york before. does anybody know if columbia, like some other universities, offers subsidized travel for low-income students to and from columbia for a visit? how should i approach this issue with columbia admissions, or should i not approach it at all? i feel uncomfortable asking for financial help and don't want to come across as presumptuous or entitled to a visit in any way. do you think that perhaps i should wait longer for any potential correspondence from them first? there is a tad sense of urgency for me because other universities are waiting on my confirmation to visit their schools, but until i know if any travel dates will potentially overlap, i can't work out my schedule.

thank you for your help in this matter!

Yes. I got a FedEx delivery from Columbia today. They offer to pay for traveling expenses…but its only for the admitted student and not the family.

Same, though I received it as an email this morning. Will probably receive the package in the mail later today.

I got an email about it, but it didn’t offer to pay for my travelling expenses despite my low-income status. I’m wondering if that’s because I applied early decision. I’m hopeful I’ll get something in the mail about it. If not, I suppose I won’t be able to go. :|

windgust: do you have to go through the columbia travel agency or do you bring your receipt for airfare? Oxy did the travel arrangements for my D, but Rice is having her bring the receipt.

It is hard since the last weekend in April is Easter, so all the schools are using the first two weekends for visits.

RD get travel paid for as CU is still courting them. ED have to pay since they are already committed.

Does CU give this travel aid to only the most needy? I received need-based FA and applied RD but I don’t believe I received any travel aid.

Bumpppp^^^

hello all,

thanks for the responses. my patience has been rewarded; i received email correspondence yesterday, and today i received a package from ups with more details about the '‘perspectives on diversity’ weekend.

iceberg, i also applied regular decision, and my family and i are just above the poverty line. so i am not sure whether travel aid is granted universally to financial aid recipients, though my guess would be that it is only for those on full need-based scholarship (or close to full perhaps).

@gbrasg…I had to go through the traveling agent Valerie Travel…or something like that. Since I live in PA, it was best for me to take the train. The lady said that I could pick up my ticket from the kiosk…the day of my departure. But you can also pay and show them receipts and they will reimburse you. Which
