Columbia and Federal Loans?

Hello all,

I'm going to Columbia University (SEAS) in Spring 2010, although I had sent them an email awhile ago but I still have not heard back from them regarding my federal loan and I do not know what I should do next? (I've already filed FAFSA on Oct 2008). NYU to which I was admitted too has mailed me an "Award Letter" where they had detailed the federal loans funds I'm eligible for, Columbia has not done the same ?

My second question is, can federal loans money be used to rent an off-campus housing ?
Third and final question :) Is this website Graduate Student Loan Applications - Graduate Loan Application the official website through which I should apply for the loan? should I go ahead and apply there or wait for response from Columbia University ?

Thank you,

You can use federal loans for any education-related expenses (that includes housing).

Your 2008 FAFSA is not current and will not apply for 2009-10 academic year. The school does not approve the loan, it only certifies your eligibility and attendance. Approval is done by the lender.

Your have not read the Master Note or eligibility rules for DOE guaranteed loans.

Thanks for the info guys.

LongPrime, I apologize, I meant to say Oct 2009 not 2008. I have filed my FAFSA last October.

Like I said, I have received a letter from NYU that details the funds I’m eligible to borrow, but I’m still waiting on a similar letter from Columbia.

Thanks again,

If I remember, you can only be certified by one school. If NYU has certified you then, DOE will not recognize Columbia, and Columbia can not give you a letter of eligibility.

Again I recommend you review the DOE/Grad PLUS program. You must apply for the loan with the lender. The school only certifies your attendance. If you don’t apply then the school has no idea that you need to be certified because they don’t get an inquiry from the lender. Got it?
