Is Columbia known for its strength in the writing department? I think I'm most interested in films and or writing, although I'm sure that is subject to change. Many writers such as Isaac Asimov, Zora Neale Thurston, etc. went there, but was that merely a coincidence that such profound writers went to Columbia, or did it help them along the way and was that a reason for going there? I know a few examples isn't going to say much (profound writers come from every walk of life and every college), so can you just tell me if you know anything about their writing/journalism department?

Journalism is a graduate school program at Columbia. I don't believe there are any undergrad journalism classes, though there is a student newspaper, the Spectator, that you can check out online. There are undergraduate creative writing classes.

Whatever you study at Columbia, one thing you'll emerge with, if you have a modicum of interest or talent, is the ability to write. A Columbia College education is profoundly about written, as well as oral, expression.
