Columbia class of '13 ED applications up 17%

Admissions Sends Early Decision Packets to Record Pool of Applicants | Columbia Spectator

the article reports:
- the college +16%
- SEAS +20%

Based upon the proportion of undergrads for each, I calculate Columbia's overall ED applications increase to be +17% from last year.

Interesting. When will we hear about the overall ED acceptance rates?

Does “sending out early decision packets” equal the number of early decision apps received?

No, those are just the acceptance packages. The rejection letters are mailed out regularly.

Then an increase in early decision acceptance packets could mean that Columbia wants to lower its yield by accepting more contractually bound applicants than in prior years, and does not necessarily mean that there was a 17% increase in ED applications.

I want that freaking acceptance packet!! RIGHT NOW… GIVE IT TO MEE

The website says that there were “nearly 2900” applications between the two schools. I don’t know how that relates to previous years, though.

ColdWind-- its not so much the “packets” as what the article said about APPLICATIONS:

Is it only in May that they post the statistics for overall admissions? Or do they post the ED admissions statistics before?

If the accepted get cool packets and the rejected get letters, what do poor old deferred people like me get? I didn’t get so much as an email saying “WE DON’T WANT YOU BUT JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT WE’RE GONNA TORTURE YOU FOR THE NEXT FOUR MONTHS, HAHA”
