Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

@columbhiroller Me too! I bet they have an advantage in the college admissions process

does anyone go to a small private or public school where classes are significantly harder than regular highschools? if so, how much would it hurt admissions if our transcripts have a couple Bs instead of straight As?

Going to private schools does give you a leg up. I donā€™t know how Xavier students do, but I can honestly that my school gives me a huge advantage. I wouldnā€™t even have the nerve to apply to Columbia if I werenā€™t in this school.

@TrazCapDEV same, there are so many more opportunities. but would admissions consider the level of difficulty of courses compared to regular high schools when looking at transcripts?

@alpha525 Well, they do use a holistic process. But yeah, it kinda is.
I guess Iā€™ve gotten used to it- my IB number comes to mind.

@ThePedestrian Iā€™m not sure if my school is considered ā€œsignificantly harderā€, but it is a (public) magnet school, and Iā€™m an IB diploma candidate. Hopefully theyā€™ll be a little more lenient because the classes are so hard but who knows. I heard that for UCs at least, they compare you to other students from your school. But Iā€™m not entirely sure how true that is for UCs or if that even applies to other schools

oh my god guys I need help I messed upā€¦so yesterday I was just aimlessly reading through this thread when I read the part where people were saying most ed applicants get an interview so I was confused bc I never did until I searched ā€œcolumbiaā€ in my all mail folder and AN INTERVIEWER CONTACTED ME ON 11/11. this is honestly the stupidest thing Iā€™ve ever done and I know itā€™s 100% my fault I literally had an anxiety attack and was sobbing forever. I honestly feel like my chances of getting in are gone and I just donā€™t know what to do. I have no idea how I never saw the email bc it was accidentally deleted. I still canā€™t believe it. I replied to her email apologizing and called her twice already but no response. Iā€™m taking full responsibility but I feel like admissions thinks Iā€™m careless and irresponsible. Iā€™m just really mad at myself and sad about this whole thing. UGHUghUgHuGhuGh

Just wondering why itā€™s assumed that small public schools or private schools have harder classes by default?

@969028 I hope that it doesnā€™t affect you negatively :frowning: Iā€™ve been aimlessly searching my inbox/voicemail for the past month, to my dissatisfaction. :frowning:

@ThePedestrian Yeah they totally do.
@PilotKhyle Well, if you go to a famous prep school thatā€™s well-known to colleges, then they donā€™t even care if your classes are hard. Brand name does it all for you. And in most cases, these famous prep schools do offer the most rigorous and demanding courses that a high school student can ask for. Even for those 2nd or 3rd tier private schools, I still believe this holds true.

I always thought that AP courses, regardless of the institution at which they are offered, present relatively the same amount of challenge/difficulty to each student as we all take the same test at the end of the year.

@PilotKhyle I hope so too but Iā€™ve been worrying about this nonstop and I donā€™t know what to do

@969028 I am sorry to hear of your situation. Just remember that you have done everything possible to help your chances at this point, and itā€™s really out of your hands. Best of wishes to you!

To my knowledge, my school has never sent anyone to an Ivy before and that makes me extremely nervous :frowning:

Guys just remember that there is nothing more we can do now. All we can do if hope for the best but also be aware that we may be disappointed. :frowning:

@TrazCapDEV I totally understand when it comes to those select few prep schools! But IN GENERAL, I canā€™t imagine other small private/public schools being more difficult. For the regular classes, sure, but as most of us are in AP/IB I would assume that the common curricula would make for equal-difficulty classes.

@TrazCapDEV But then again, there are a lot of factorsā€¦ My state has terrible education anyways lol

@soph1112 my school is very large (there are 820 in my class alone) and there seems to be one from each class that attends an Ivy as an undergraduate. Not very promising odds, but then again, I go to public school (what else to expect).

@columbhiroller thanks for your comment  itā€™s just heartbreaking that there was an opportunity and I missed itā€¦especially since Iā€™m scared it may have gotten back to admissions and made a bad impression.

@columbhiroller Wow thatā€™s a huge class!! Well I wish you the best of luck  Iā€™m trying to not get ahead of myself. Like Iā€™ve already looked into classes and all the dormsā€¦ Iā€™m trying to keep myself off the website now lol
