Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

My midterms are waaaay in late January… but I really want to skip school the day after decisions come out! If I’m accepted, I’ll be so happy that I don’t want to deal with mundane schoolwork and I’d feel like I deserve a “reward” (lmao) but if I get rejected, I’d want to stay at home to wallow in pity…

@TrazCapDEV Everyone in my city asks where I’ve applied and I say, “Columbia” of course… Somehow, nobody knows what CU is so they always ask “Columbia, Missouri or South Carolina?” :))

Im a guy and I applied for Physics and East/asian studies at CC. Anyone else also apply for physics?

@TrazCapDEV I go to a school with about 70 kids in my grade, and four kids applied early to Columbia >.< really hoping that I stood out to the admissions officers

I hate to bring up supplements because you all already went over that, but did anyone reference the “Engineering Plus” program? “Passport to Museums?”

I applied to women’s studies and human rights, any similar majors out there?

@PilotKhyle no, I talked about some other things, but it’s great that you did! I mean, personally, I don’t think there’s any way that could’ve gone wrong.

Are all your schools really small, or is mine really big? My class has 625 students…

@dr0wning I go to a prep school, so it is pretty small…

Im trying to start my regular applications, but I’m too burnt out. What is going on…

@TrazCapDEV is there a difference between prep school and private school?
Also, did any of you guys use a college counselor? As in, you pay someone and they help you in your college search and essay editing.

@dr0wning Well, you can see prep schools as private schools on steroids…
I’m pretty sure some kids at my school do, but the majority doesn’t. Or they just didn’t tell me.

So, funny story…

When I visited Columbia over Spring Break of 2015, it was FREEZING outside. In fact, one of the days that we were there, it actually snowed. Anyways, because it was so cold walking everywhere and on the subway platforms, we came to hunger VERY fast.

After my Information Session in the famous Havemeyer 309, my family decided that it was definitely time to eat. Soon after canceling our reservation at Sylvia’s in Harlem (great btw) we found ourselves walking up Broadway to try and find a quick bite to eat. We were enroute to somewhere that a local pointed out, when I noticed this little hole-in-the-wall-esque diner. Being from outside of NYC, my family is very particular on cleanliness of kitchens, so I actually had to DRAG them in there to eat.

The food was priced at about $12-$14 for the better combos, so it was kind of high for your regular brunch, (in my hometown, at least) but there was just something about this diner that made it so unique! Maybe it was the coffee? Maybe it was just the heater! I just knew that if (when? ) I got into Columbia, this would be my spot!

So a few months passed… on once October day I was browsing Instagram, when I noticed an explore tab that was entitled “Famous Places.” I clicked on it and scrolled through about 12 of these “famous places” until I came across that very warm and decently-priced diner from Broadway St. near Columbia!

Come to find out, “Tom’s Restaurant” is the VERY famous “Restaurant” from Seinfeld! Sooooo… When you ALL get accepted into Columbia, know that down the street, there exists a very famous and warm diner named Tom’s Restaurant.

There wasn’t a point in posting this. I just thought I’d share because my mom didn’t find it amusing that we were so oblivious lol.

for some reason i really love the phrase “we came to hunger VERY fast” lmao i just imagine a family shivering and whispering to each other “i came to hunger very fast wbu”

@dr0wning That may or may not be an accurate portrayal. 8-| :))

@TrazCapDEV I go to a college counseling place, but the students there come from public (but very competitive) schools. Maybe their parents have the idea that it’s not so bad to spend money on a counselor since they’re not spending it on tuition…? I had this weird idea that private school kids would be more likely to have counselors, for some reason.

@dr0wning @PilotKhyle HAHAHAH ME TOO THAT PHRASE IS SO FUNNY. I’m so glad I have this group chat hahaha it is comforting

@dr0wning @TrazCapDEV I believe that for the most part, private school counsellors are more active in general, as they have fewer students and more specific duties. For example, at an elite private school near me, there are two “Senior Counselors” for a class of 40… In my school, however, you are assigned a counselor based upon your surname. Each of our counselors are responsible for ~400 students. So it would make sense for students of public schools to have private college counselors!

Anybody else completely engrossed in everything Columbia right now. I check the Spectrum, Spectator, Bwog dialy and have checked on the basketball teams scores everytime they play, along with the first indoor track meet Saturday of course! I think Im ready to be a Columbia stduent lol!

@twix123 I do too! Go check out the CU Wiki! Some of the information is outdated, but you’ll learn a lot about Columbia! Including the tunnels. >:)
