Columbia College vs. School of General Studies

Sorry i meant june. :)

Thanks Zhaozhao,

I am most afraid lest the late notification by noe means mean less chances of admission. I mean, yeah, my college transcript was mailed on 24 March, so they probably had my complete application a bit late, like, 10th of April or smth., BUT, that will in no way impact my application, will it? I DID submit my portion of application on time!

My understanding is that it is six weeks from when your application is complete, which would include all documentation including transcripts.

I am an international applicant, too. My app became complete on March 26, but have not heard anything yet. I called the admissions office a couple days ago, and was told that they have not reviewed my application. It will have been six weeks by tomorrow, but I donā€™t think I will get the decision by then, because someone mentioned that even some ED applicants have not got a word yetā€¦

Hey, my application was completed before April as well. The GS website calendar states that May 1st is the date in which ED applicants will be notified of their decisions. On the other hand the site states that June is the month in which the regular decision applicants will be notified. The strange thing is that they also say that applicants will be given a decision within 4-6 weeks since handing in their applicationā€¦
I also called GS about three days ago and was told that it will take couple of weeks.
I think that the best thing is to wait and see. The moment one of us here will get his/hers decision, the rest of us will probably get it as well soon after.
Good luck!
Adam

Hey, Adam,

I think that June first is the deadline for regular admission. and then all applicants should be notified around mid July. At this point I really donā€™t know when will I get a decision on my application, although remember if you reside outside U.S. your decision might be on its way to you.
The last time I was there in the office (April 7th) they told me that they will start to review my application next week or so. if thatā€™s the case then I will probably have to wait another two weeks and that beyond the 6 wks period.
Anyway, seems like we all are still waiting.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU GUYS

Hey zhaozhao,

Do you think July is actually a possibility?

Itā€™s so lateā€¦ no ?

Adam

July is extremely late. Not to mention that most of the other schools expect you to make a decision much earlier. I donā€™t no why it takes so long but itā€™s driving me crazy ;)

Hey everyone,

I am graduating this year with a BA in English and French. I have already applied to Columbia and I would very much like to know if that would make any sense and difference to send my final paper as a supplement or research work, I dont really know. Do you think they would like that or that would make me look desperate ???

GS receives thousands of applications, and I assume they spend not so long time reviewing each application. That, I think, is why they limit the length of essay. If you can include the excerpts of your work as an optional essay, thatā€™s fine. Otherwise, you should ask the admissions office whether itā€™s acceptable to submit your paper.

Hi everybody,

Just saw GSā€™s new response to ā€œTHEā€ question we are all asking here.

Iā€™ll just copy paste:

ā€œIf you submitted a completed application by the April 1 deadline for international students, we anticipate that you should be notified within 6 weeksā€.

That basically means the next 5 days.

Good luck :)

Adam

I saw that too, I just went downstairs to get mails, no luck today. maybe tomorrow or anytime before this Saturday.

Good luck

Hi budies,

I have just emailed them and asked if I send them the official results of my current semester in mid May it will get to them in two weeks and I was told getting my documents around 1st June should not be a problem and if they need anything sonner, they will let me know. I dont undersnatnd , how come June is not a problem if they have told me they will notify me in late May or early June? I dont really know what do do or what to think. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Hey goharik, Iā€™m not quite sure what you mean. I believe they admit you based on your previous academic work, not what is in progress. So they should be able to notify you about your acceptance prior (May/June) to getting your official results (June).

Also just a thought, perhaps you guys want to start a separate thread in the GS specific forum? Just thinking that might make sense so future yearsā€™ applicants would find your information easily, which Iā€™m sure will be valuable to them.

I did start something in the GS specific forum but I guess people prefer here.

Anyway goharik I think they told you that is because they have no problem with u sending your current doc. However I agree with AMorrision that they will have the decision really soon. So I am not sure if thatā€™s gonna help you in anyway, I called today. And they told me that my app. is under review and she said that they will notify the international applicants shortly. And they will send them in regular mails.
Also. I have only heard that some of the accepted applicants were asked to submit their grade when they finish the current semester.

Now I am thinking maybe another two or even three weeks to get the decision. I have also learned today that I accidentally enter the wrong street add. good thing I called.

hey,

thanks everyone, I so much appreciate your advice.

I really want them to have my now already almost last semester grades since last semester I did not so well, I had only Bs, and I have had only As this semester. I am thinking of sending the docs via expendited shiping, but I have to go to another town for that since the service is not available where I live :frowning: do u guys really think I will hear from them before June? The application deadline for government fin aid is June 15 and I am kinda worried not to be notified by then :(

again me!

hmmm, I am now kinda worried that my applying for appl. fee waiver will have a negative effect on my applicationā€¦:frowning: I mean, might they think, if this kid cannot pay even the fee, how is she gonna pay the tuition and room and board. I will get full financial aid from the government, and I did mention this on my appplication for fin. aid but I am worried lest the folks at the adm. office do not know of this. Should I email them?

Thnx

Because they didnā€™t know what they were saying :). GS is for applicants who have a year or more gap between high school and college. Because of that, it is a self-selecting group so the admission rates are higher than CC. Admission rate percentages can be misleading.

what about my question?:(

goharik19,

As for your current transcript, I do not think sending it will affect their decision either positively nor negatively, though you may have to wait longer if you do. I understand that you really want to show the improvement since the last term, but I think what they really want to know is your long-term overall academic performance, not just about the last couple terms. When I asked the admissions office about the classes that were in progress at the time I sent my transcript, they told me that they will ask me to send an updated transcript only AFTER I am admitted. Based on the conversation with the office, I came to believe that just a couple more As do not change their decisions.

I am not totally sure about the admission fee. However, I do not think GS discriminate applicants based on their financial ability. It is more than enough to mention that you are expecting financial aid from government in your application.
