Went today to Columbia commencement- it was awesome. Lot's of people. Some highlights:

People from Columbia College threw apples at SEAS kids
SEAS kids threw paper airplanes at college kids and made noise with clappers
Dental School kids waved around huge toothbrushes
J-School threw shredded newspaper
SIPA had a lot of flags from all over the world
Zvi Galil: "I LOVE YOU ALL"
Medical Candidates swore the hippocratic oath

Then...

When barnard was introduced there was some "booing" or "moo-ing" (BarnYard allusion i guess).

That was kinda mean lol... but i didnt know Barnard actually donned on Columbia robes and held their graduation together. hm. Guess there's not that much difference between Barnard and Columbia after all.

They're forever Barnard students/alums -- and not Columbia students/alums -- even though they get to play dress up and wear ugly blue-gray robes for one morning.

im really getting tired of all these people who ARE NOT STUDENTS trying to describe the columbia/barnard link. come back next year when you actually have some knowledge of what you are saying. otherwise, shut up. all of you.

Seriously. Skraylor's about to burn this whole place down, like the guy at the burger joint in Harold and Kumar.

We have a no-being-dumb rule. Violators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again. And mocked.

Skraylor, I understand how you might feel about a "stranger" talking about things that don't concern them yet or things in which they are not yet well-informed with.

But as invaluable as you are to the Columbia forum, you should really calm the raging superiority complex you (and some others) have about being Columbia students and having exclusive rights to talk about connections between Barnard and Columbia.
Like, big deal. Get over it. All of you.

What he said was completely innocent, but I WOULD like to know is what he was doing at Commencement in the first place.

vesalvay i looked up your thread and comment, and i don't think you are in a position of talking like that lol

The line of the day came from Dean Awn of GS, calling students "deeply indebted" to the university (in reference to the new CC/SEAS financial aid structure). Bollinger's speech was abysmal; worst I've heard so far from his tenure. I did hear booing to both Barnard and GS via the online stream and have heard stories of CC'ers pelting other divisions with apple cores. Classy.

C2002 -- they got to play dress up for as many as three days! Baccalaureate, BC Graduation, and CU Commencement!

I want to know how the divisional order and seating arrangements are determined. The first school conferred is CC, followed by SEAS, BC, GS, and the other divisions (concluding with GSAS). First, why confer BC (and TC) at all, and secondly, why place BC ahead of so many other divisions? It's probably a trivial point, but recognition of the affiliates should come after the university's own divisions. My only guess would be that it's a sticking point built into the BC-CU (and TC-CU) agreement long ago.

For those playing at home, this is the degree candidate map:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ceremonies/commencement/images/candidate_seating.gif

My gripe stems from what looks to be another shafting of GS, but unlike the senile bickering and whining the accompanies the elderly, this one actually has substantial validity. Notice the affiliate TC, relegated to bleacher areas 8 and 14, closest to Kent. Notice GS, perched atop bleacher area 10 (closest to Dodge) and behind the west fountain. Now notice BC's front row seat in area 3. 4, 5, 6, and 12 are saved for the traditional undergraduate divisions of CC and SEAS, obviously placing university undergrads (along with BC) closest to the stage. I would propose swapping BC with GS, so GS can graduate alongside the other two undergraduate divisions, while relegating the second affiliate to an area opposite TC.

oh.....good.....grief!!!

(insert picture of a disgusted Charlie Brown here)

haha viva, I was there cuz 3 of my friends were graduating

WS, as it says right in the program for Commencement, the seating arrangements (and the order of presentation by the deans) is done in the order of founding of each of the schools.

CC - 1754
SEAS - 1859 (?)
BC - 1889
GS - 1910 or something

and then all the graduate schools in the similar order, starting probably with the law school.

It's not a point of a raging superiority complex, its a point of you kids not listening. truazn has been around long enough to see the other 4 or 5 threads where current students have gone on, at length, about the Columbia/barnard link. Right now, he is just choosing to ignore what people who are more knowledgeable are telling him and instead placing his own very misguided and misinformed views into the discourse. That is what ****es me off.

If it was once or even twice I could forgive it, but no, this is getting old and you are simply perpetuating a stupid misconception of columbia. Just like that one kid who was saying GS is a backdoor into columbia or the other one who was showing such indignation at the fact that barnard exists.

So i'll say it again: don't show off your ignorance because you will just get burned by the many current students on this board. As incoming students, you know nothing about Columbia. It may sound harsh but its the truth. You wouldnt want me telling you something about your high school if I didnt attend there; the same thing applies here.

Why the hell do you care so much? If you pretend to be so mature, calling ppl who are 1 or 2 years younger than you "kids", you just should not give a damn about the stuff prefrosh write. Just ignore it, what is the big deal? If you say you are a big boy, you gotta act like one, too...

Yes, lets all preach to the choir, because spending time on internet college forums instead of being productive is a sure sign of intellectual maturity for us all .

Aw, all of this bickering on the board makes me sad. I'd be lying if I said I was completely innocent, but anyone who reads this probably gets the idea that we're a bunch of uptight meanies. Being stubborn isn't getting anyone anywhere and we all just want to show how much we know (or how much we think we know) but it's coming at the expense of the positive spirit I think we all would like to get across. This board has been extremely helpful to me and I'm glad it's around. Alums, current students, prefrosh, parents...we all love Columbia don't we? Let's keep that in mind :)

Point taken, Skraylor.

Although I still don't know what junelay is smoking..

I imagine apples would hurt

Peafire, the "big deal" is that some pre-frosh that are considering Barnard/Columbia/SEAS or older students considering GS might see some things posted out of ignorance and take it as truth...

Also, I really appreciate older students posting here. How else would anyone learn from their prospective? You should be wise and pay attention to those who have direct experience with the University and thus know more than you.

as i have said before, I love my job and consider it among the most exciting in the world. The fact that I take a few minutes out of my day, when I feel like letting my mind wander and being a little ADD, to post on a message board, is none of your damn business, and to judge me or any other poster for being immature or lazy or whatever is not just shortsighted (i.e., you can benefit from us), but just plain ignorant and wrong. Judge on the content and quality of posts, sure, but I bet you sit around and watch TV at night (just based on the odds). Is that so much better than posting on message boards?

Better question: are other posters on other boards on CC this judgmental or obnoxious? I honestly don't know.
