"columbia Dean: Sure We'd Invite Hitler To Speak"

"Why wouldn't you invite Himmler? I mean, sure, Himmler has killed more people, but where do you draw the line? Is your free speech banned after killing more than 1,000,000 people? Maybe 2,000,000?"

Are you serious? You think people want to sit in that auditorium and listen to the words of a murderer. They will probably stop supporting Columbia's endowment.

"Something like 20% of Americans can't find the USA on a map"

This is actually justified by the question posed to Ms. North Carolina in the beauty contest

Well, Dean Coatsworth sure would. Furthermore, Iran sponsors Hezbollah and is trafficking arms into Iraq. Not only is Ahmadinejad's regime responsible for killing Americans, but it is responsible for killing Sunnis as well, and ruining the lives of many Iraqis by destabilizing the whole country.

He is a top figure in a murderous regime - yet you want to sit in an auditorium and listen to this murderer speak.

a comfort zone to defend their indefensible position

if their position is indefensible what are we worrying about??

Let's be adults about these things, are you in any way empathizing, understanding or supportive of Hitler's views??

datdude, thats such an awesome way to argue something....insinuate that the other party is a nazi loyalist

damn those iranians, and the iraqis were just so damn joyous after we invaded them! why did iran have to come along and screw everything up.... thanks for clarifying the iraq situation, and here i was thinking that it was all america's fault by dismantling the army and creating a power vacuum.

yea i think i'll just stop there, it doesnt seem like anyone here wants to actually discuss anything and just wants to trash columbia and call whoever disagrees with their views a nazi. oh and So Authentic.....i dare you not to apply to columbia....either way though i don't think it'll matter.

"oh and So Authentic.....i dare you not to apply to columbia....either way though i don't think it'll matter."

That was a joke or figure of speech.........whatever you wish to call it! Honestly, I can care less about this whole issue and whether some guy is speaking at a University or not. My only argument here is to not compare two people with each other because not everyones equal. & Shraf, chill out with the excessive sarcasm.

On top of that, you guys are bickering over something that you all cannot change. No matter how long you all argue, the guy is still going to speak tomorrow. & I think to say "Hey, Columbia U., really don't get it" is just going overboard. Thats Columbia's business. So the media need to just chill.

Shraf, grow up. By asking if So Authentic in any way empathized, understood or agreed on Hitler's views, it was not to insinuate anything, but to confirm EMPHATICALLY that he did not agree or empathize, which is something you have yet to do in this thread. And I just KNOW you're smarter than "if their position is indefensible what are we worrying about??" The worry is that someone with such extreme and ignorant views would be dignified with an audience at one of the top universities in the country. Younger people are very impressionable, as their minds are still deciding which ideologies to follow. Would it be a stretch to say that if Hitler were to speak at Columbia (hypothetically) or anywhere else in America that he wouldn't amass a certain following? Look around a bit, he HAS a certain folllowing. It's called poisoning people's minds. If that was why Hitler was such a "genius," because he could poison people's minds then he certainly was a genius and there are a lot of other geniuses out there. But, poisoning someone's mind makes you a manipulator and a crook, and that is more like what Adolph Hitler was.

"This event is pointless - nobody will learn anything from it or change their views, and it is ruining the already-tarnished (after the minuteman incident) reputation of Columbia."

Please Columbia and the rest of the Ivy League gave up any commitment to academic and intellectual diversity and free speech a long time ago. Men like Dr Bollinger would be jokes if they weren't so dangerous, and trust me he poses a much bigger threat to our freedom and democracy than AmabeenaJewhaterallmylife ever will.
