Columbia deferred me, now what are my chances?

I was deferred from Columbia, and have a list of about 20 other schools I'm applying to, all of which are top 25. So, just take the top 25 and take out Emory, Rice, Vanderbilt, Yale, Dartmouth, and Notre Dame. There, those are my schools.
Now, what are my chances? Also, what will my chances be for ended up being accepted at Columbia?

My safeties right now are:
UVA
U Mich
Georgetown
Carnegie Mellon
What do you guys/girls think?

I'm too lazy to look up the top 20 schools in the country right now, but I think it's a bit absurd to apply to that many schools.

While your resume does look pretty good, you seem to be lacking in any really stand out ECs, and since you are out of state, I think calling UVA, UMich as safeties is a bit of a stretch. Same goes for Gtown, I wouldn't think of that is a safety...a good math perhaps, but not a safety. I don't know enough about Carnegie Mellon to make an accurate guess though.

well, I go to school in NY, my state residency is VA, plus my stepmom is a professor there, does that help?! plus I am getting recs from two professors besides her, one of which was my professor at Columbia this term.

my ECs are that I am a competitive table tennis player, jr. state champ last year, and that I founded the club at my school. Boarding at high school limits the potential ECs I can do.

well, the residency in VA and professor relation does help quite a bit i would imagine, as long as you can figure out a way to get that on your app.

she is going to write a rec. and bring it into the admissions office. they will know about it. the residency in VA almost makes it a definite

UVA is great and the price is right!

that doesn't help me, thanks for nothing

i agree carnegie is probably a safety but georgetown...no for you its probably a slight reach-reach...=(

well it's good to know that carnegie is a safety, I'm 90% confident UVA is a safety, and more than 50% confident that UMich is a safety. Georgetown~60% sure I will get in there

i'm just saying your sats and gpa is a bit low for georgetown...>< but research should make it up =D gl!

One thing that I think kids who apply to a TON of schools tend to forget is that schools love when kids show a keen interest in their school. So let's say that Georgetown isn't a sure thing, but you want it to be in your safety category. Do an interview, visit the campus, ask for as much mail as you can from them. Stay in touch with the school, etc.

I guess I can only speak from experience, but I got accepted at Carleton College early decision, and I spent three weeks there this summer at a Writing camp, did an on-campus interview, did an alumni interview, went to their seattle informational session, and went to the high school informational session. None of that(besides the summer camp haha), took any significant effort on my part, and it showed how dedicated I was to the school. My resume wasn't fantastic by any stretch, but I showed how much I cared about the school, and it paid off.

That's my two cents on that.

haha your doing the shot gun method, apply to as many top schools at once nad pray to get into at least one. To be honest, your stats are good but not great. You have a B Average and im guessing ur SAT 1 is in the 2100 range. Im not suprised you got flat out rejected from Columbia with Tennis and taking classes at a University is your biggest hook. If you wrote great essays i can see u getting into U MICH, CMU, Gtown, Virginia, Berkely and possibly even Northwestern and Cornell. But you have to realize this: you're not that damn good. Theres ppl out there with 4.0, 2400, and internships. So dont whine about not getting into schools and dont be snappy at ppl who take time out to give you some advice or information or dont use the site.

i was deferred too. your sats are better than mine (730 M, 670 CR), (720 Chem, 770 Math2). i guess i shouldnt be feeling too badly. good luck.

Need800math, you're stats are well within Georgetown's The only thing hurting you is the 89 GPA, which you can probably explain since you appear to be an intelligent person. G'town is slightly less selective than Columbia and I'd call it a match for you, definitely not a safety. UVA is a safety, given your connections there.

georgetown is not a match w/ a 89gpa O.o georgetown is up to tier w/ cornell and jhu. Low gpa is not made up through high sat score because gpa is more important. High gpa can make up for bad sat score but it usually doesn;t go around the other way. Anyhow still apply but apply to some safeties just in case =D
edit: gl!...i know...=/ gpa should never have been invented nor should have the sat writing...all colleges should just ignore everything and look at math+verbal score =D gl! anyway!
