Columbia, Duke, John Hopkins, Dartmouth

Hi, everyone. I'm wondering if you would all be able to chance me on a few schools. I plan on completely a pre-medicine track in college while majoring in either biology, neuroscience, or psychology. Most of these things will stay the same except for my SAT I and SAT II scores. I'm planning on retaking the SAT I next weekend and retaking SAT II for Math II in October. Thanks in advance!

Schools I'm Interested in:
- Columbia University
- Duke Univeristy
- John Hopkins University
- Dartmouth University
- University of Georgia Foundation Fellows Program
- Emory University
- NYU
- Stanford University

SAT I:
- November 2010- 2190 (760 Writing, 730 Math, 700 CR)

- I scored 5's on the first two exams and am currently waiting for the results of the rest. I except 5's on all my exams except maybe Bio which I may have gotten a 4.

All my other classes are gifted classes (more difficult than honors at my school) with the exception of two years of Latin because Gifted Latin is not offered.

Classes for next year (12th grade):
- AP Psychology
- AP Government/AP Macroeconomics

- 250+ Hours of Community Service
- President of Imagination Revolution: This is a recent student-run, nonprofit organization with a decent amount of publicity and credibility locally. 2010-2011 school year was it's first year of operation where I helped in starting the program. The goal is to promote arts (visual, dance, music, composition, theatre, etc) to young children (primarily in elementary school) since a lot of local elem. schools are now cutting these things due to the recession.

- Gender: Female
- Income: Approx. $80k-90k
- I've also struggled with some serious personal/family issues throughout my childhood that I'm not comfortable posting on here, but most likely I will write about under the special circumstances or essay portion of my applications.

Chance me please :)
And if there's anything you think I can improve on statistically, please let me know!

Find safeties but you seem to have pretty good chances…
However sats could be higher…

Retake SATs, decent ECs with a passion for the arts. Maybe you can show aptitude for science a little more as you are going for pre-med. All-in-all, good shot.

good chances i agree with blazer on the SAT’s they need to be retaken but other than that you look good.

Marshfrog- I think my safeties are University of GA and Emory as of now.

I’m working on retaking SAT I next weekend. Also, I’m a first generation college student as well as an immigrant to the US. &I forgot to add that I am a National Merit Semi-Finalist.

Any other replies/chances would be much appreciated! :)

I think you have a solid shot at most of those schools if you can get your SATs up. However, with a lot of top notch schools admissions is entirely luck of the draw so I would consider finding a few mid range schools or more safety choices.

Definitely find some safety schools. Your stats and ECs are decent, but it is extremely difficult to get into some of the schools on your list which is why you need some back up schools that you would be ok with attending. Thanks for chancing me and good luck!

immigrant status wont help an asian but first gen may. What makes you first gen college student if you have 80-90k family income as an immigrant? Immigrants dont usually make that kind of money without college degrees from their own countries.

You should get in at NYU but they wont give you much money. Apply to Southern Cal if you expect to be NMSF. They have half tuition as a minimum if you are accepted.

Ivies are a crapshoot along with Stanford and Duke is getting up there. So your chances is as good as anyone elses.

Thanks guys!

Any other chances are greatly appreciated (I will chance you back ASAP if you leave a link)
Also, if anyone has any suggestions for safety schools, I’ll definitely look into those, thanks!

Columbia University (low reach)

Duke Univeristy (low reach)

John Hopkins University (low reach)

Dartmouth University (reach)

University of Georgia Foundation Fellows Program (match)

Emory University (match)

NYU (match)

Stanford University (high reach)

emory can’t be a safety, especially with those SAT scores

Why is everyone telling someone with a 2190 to retake the SATs? Sure IRS not a 2400 but it’s not going to be the factor that holds you back.

You cannot consider Emory a safety. Also U Georgia is a safety for you but not the FF Program- you may only be granted admission to the university.

Emory will never be a safety… And by you not attending their program, it’s even less likely… (I’d say)

Actually I think a higher SAT will help. A 2250+ would be great if you can get there.

My personal opinion: You’ve got it made! Shoot for the stars! Excellent ECs, tons of APs and other hard classes, a flawless GPA . . . Just chillax. That’s an excellent app!

You seem like an OUTSTANDING STUDENT!! As long as you retake the SAT’s then I think you have a high chance of getting in to all of these colleges. Spend alot of time on your essay. GOOD LUCK!!

New SAT score just came out: 2330 (800 Writing, 770 CR, 760 Math)

i honestly don’t think you have much to worry about with a 2300+ SAT under your belt.
