SAT II: 800 Math II; 800 US History; 720 Chemistry

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

-top 10 in DECA (competitions about business, similar to the olympiads, though less competitive) internationally in my series
-international test and role-play awards for DECA
-State-level Piano Audition Honors 6 Years in a row
-Piano Award for a private music club that is state-wide: 1st place (probably the best single award)
-International Piano Audition: 1st Place Award, 2nd place another year (not as great as it sounds but still pretty good)
-Performed in Lincoln Center and Carnegie as part of winner recitals

Minor Awards:
-National Honor Society
-AP Scholar With Distinction
-Yale Book Award
-Community Service Award for school for technology program (will explain later)
-Finance research paper semi-finalist at tri-state competition (will explain below)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-Community Service (I created a program that has spread across my county; I give private lessons about basic technology and computers to underprivileged children; I run all operations and manage about 5 other tutors; won a community service award from school)
-JV Baseball (9,10) - however, this was not put in my application
-Volunteering Club (9, 10, 11, 12) - head of project
-Spanish Club (10 ,11, 12) President
-School Newspaper Business Staff (10, 11, 12) - Head of Business Staff
-Stock Market Club (10, 11, 12) - President
-DECA Business competitions(11, 12) - States finalist, States Test award, States 1st place overall, Internationals Test Award, Internationals Role-play Award, International Top 10
-Finance Research Team (11, 12) - Won a semi-finalist award at a tri-state competition. Was chosen as one of 3 students from school. We conducted professional research and wrote a paper for the competition (did not submit an abstract to Columbia because they only wanted science abstracts)

Job/Work Experience: worked at summer camp for two summers; did not have room in my application to put in

Volunteer/Community service: my technology program for underprivileged children (see above)

Summer Activities: Massachusetts Boys State delegate (a civics/government week-long program that you must be selected by the school for. Delegates elect gov officials and learn about how government works. I was elected/appointed to many positions, including one of the “Big Five” positions of the executive branch)

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I will try to remain objective

CommonApp - 10 (my counselor said my essay was the best he’s read, and he has a great record of sending kids to ivies and other similar institutions; highly personal)
Why Columbia? - 8 (did not have enough words to show off my knowledge about Columbia, but I mentioned the Core and other unique facets of the institution. What I focused on was the specific learning environment that Columbia sets out to create. Was well-written, and I believe I established that Columbia was my first choice and it was a good fit for my goals when it comes to learning: being idealistic, humble, and open-minded).
Single Activity - 6/7 (wrote about how the finance research team caused me to never trust information at face-value; had a few technical terms and ideas, but not too saturated with boring finance talk; nothing special)
Why Major? - 9 (my best supplement essay; for the record, my intended major is economics-political science; mentioned my experiences as business manager of the newspaper and my finance research team and showed my love for business and economics; explained how my community service work has sparked an interest in me to create economic public policy by responding to the needs of society; tied together extracurricular experiences with the economics-political science major and emphasized how this was a versatile major that above all allowed me to explore my interests and understand the intricacies of society through different lenses)

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I waived my FERPA so i didn’t get a chance to read, but I can provide details

Teacher Rec #1: AP Econ teacher, finance teacher, and finance research adviser who selected me to join team - very close with him; he knows my other activities too and knows my goal of doing something econ related; became close through research
Teacher Rec #2: Calc teacher, had her for two years, am one year ahead of the highest traditional math course sequence at school; close with her
Counselor Rec: I go to a public school and my counselor has many other kids to write recs about. But he always initiates conversation when I see him in the hall and actually knows my first and last name, which is a big deal at my school
Additional Rec:N/A
Interview: still waiting for info

-in the “Contacts” section of the Columbia supplement, I wrote that I had several close family friends who told me about Columbia and were either former or current students
