Columbia Engineering Experience 2016

Is anyone applying to this? It seems pretty nice (free lodging, transportation, three days to get to know Columbia more) and is probably very difficult to get into. Has anyone attended this program before?

Hello! I’m applying as well, even I don’t get in it won’t be that bad because you get a fee waiver just for applying!

@popper345 can you share your demographics + stats/ecs? i’m kind of worried that since i’m not URM that i’ll be at a disadvantage and my stats aren’t amazing

I’m from GA and I’m African American. I wouldn’t worry too much about being at a disadvantage. First, I feel like it isn’t weighed too heavily in this application and second, there isn’t anything you can do to change your race so you might as well not worry about it. I don’t know if your first-gen college student but that probably helps (I’m not one if you were wondering, I’m a first-gen American but they don’t ask about that)

GPA: 4.00
ACT: 31 (retaking on Sept 10)
ECs: Band, color guard, research, campus ambassador, NHS, French honor society

A basic summary of my stats

It is a good idea to apply if you are a minority and/or low income and/or first gen.

If nothing else, they will have an advance view of your application.

Just submitted my application earlier today. I’m also a African-American from Georgia. Counting down the days to decision day on Sept. 21!

@Lilmanbiggie What a coincidence, a fellow Georgian! How long did it take you to answer the short answers questions? That is the last thing I have to finish before I submit.

Satisfying to see that I wasn’t late seeing this opportunity.

@popper345 I took about 30 minutes for the interest in engineering. About an hour each for the other two.

I’m applying as well! I’m a girl interested in engineering so I think that might be a hook of some sort but we’ll see. Seems like an interesting program.

since it said list, i assume a resume format, bullet point response for the activities is fine right

That’s what I did @y0l0lsen

Hey Guys! I am applying to this! My junior GPA was a 4.57…I’m african american, president of a club at my high school, does cheer and track and field, Researched at Stanford. Do you guys think I have a chance if I haven’t done anything really engineering related? I want to be a doctor but I feel that this programs has many benefits since I am interested in Math & Science. Hope we all get in

@futuredoc99 was your research at stanford not engineering related?

also am i the only asian person applying :frowning:

No:( It was cancer related but I worked with computers lol… I prob won’t get in

@y0l0lsen

@futuredoc99 i think being african american will probably help a lot! also i’m sure u do have some engineering related stuff or at least u wrote a good essay/filledout decent resume stuff. worst case u get a free waiver

Hey eveyone I am also a African American from Georgia. GPA: 4.3 , ACT 34 EC: science bowl, math team , science Olympiad , academic bowl , national honor society , math national honor society , French national honor society , Ga tech distant math student , key club member , swim team captain , founder of a nonprofit ,also did a Stanford cardiothoracic surgical skills internship over the summer. @y0l0lsen you are not the only Asian here who applied!

@Cpool101 You did the Stanford cardiothoracic surgical skills camp? That looked so cool (I want to be a surgeon). I did SIMR the research program at Stanford… I think I saw you guys in blue scrubs lol
