alright, im not sure if this question might come across to you guys as a stupid question, but for the columbia essay, is the 200-500 word limit a recommendation, or a strict regulation O_O?

Mine's 700, and I think i could possibly cut it down to 600, but I'd rather not =.,=..

Thanks! and also, this is even a dumber question (AHHAHA) but for the first year applicants, is there only one essay (apart from all the short answer questions) that we have to write? (the sense of who you are one) I always thought there were usually two essays...;; =_____=

Well, I'm kind of new to this too, but I don't think the ad com would really appreciate it if it's waay over limit. But if you think you can't be more succinct and get the same points across, then keep it. If you can trim the fat but still get the message across, by all means cut it down to 600 (which is still 100 words over what they recommend). That's my opinion.

And yes, there's only one essay--the personal statement, apart from all the short answer questions, which for me may be even more annoying than the essay because they ask you what you find most appealing about Columbia. What are you writing about for that btw? I don't know what I find MOST appealing...

and i havent really read any of the short answer ones, but i think im gonna say something about the campus and the location of the college (New York) and elaborate like heck O_O;;

btw, the personal statement IS the give us a sense of who you are one, right

This isn't a good idea. If you're so enthusiastic about NYC, they'll wonder why you chose to apply to Columbia instead of NYU. The "why Columbia" section is for specifics. You need to convey to them how you will benefit from a Columbia education, not its location in NYC.

Keep in mind that you'll be limited to 300 characters, including spaces and punctuation, for that section.

i talked it over with my mom and we decided to fly over to Columbia. someone told me the campus was either a you love it or you hate it kind of thing.

also, i guess i gotta do some more research on Columbia's education and see if i like it enough to go for ED. i wasnt taking this seriously enough O___O

i don't know where else to ask this, so I'm just going to go ahead and do it here :]

do you guys know if there is any way to see this year's essays without submitting part 1 of the application?
I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to go with early or regular decision, and until I figure it out I won't be able to submit it and therefore won't be able to get started on the essays. This may be delayed until I visit Columbia, since I'm not really comfortable with applying without seeing the campus first, and I'm not sure when that is going to be. I don't want to end up rushing through my essay!
I know I'm going to apply, whether it be ED or RD, so do you guys have any suggestions?
Thanks!

So the “Why Columbia” essay is the personal statement? Or are they separate essays? And what are their word limits?
I was under the impression that they were separate answers, regardless of the short answer Qs!
