Columbia First-Year Taking Questions

phantom, didu get my p.m. and btw um of the 2,000 who roughly apply. e.d are the majority of them ny residents and how many of the e.d. are legacies

hmm I have a question about the SAT scores, are they treating SAT writting score differently for SEAS and college applicants? because on the kaplan list they put SEAS as treating writting less than other but CC as undecided

confused23 -- I just PMed you back. I don't know those statistics, and even if I did, I doubt I'd be allowed to divulge them. Do a search on their site or on www.columbiaspectator.com. They might've been released officially at some point.

should i be worried if my reccs were all sent on the 31st of october and columbia hasnt showed any of them as being processed

To answer 2 popular questions:

1) Attached answers to the short answer questions are STRONGLY STRONGLY discouraged. The admissions officer I spoke to says they are looking for applicants who can clearly and simply articulate their responses.

2) Allow at least two weeks before calling. However, the answer you get when you call will most likely be the same as the one on your status page (not yet processed). As long as your app was postmarked by Nov 1, there is no cause for worry. We are still processing a huge number of applications every day (not even dying down yet).

phantom, do you know thania sanchez?

hey really interesting thing phantom when my counselor sent the secondary school report my h.s. transcript and coll. transcript where in the same folder is it possible they dont process everything together because it shows my secondary school report to be processed but not my transcript ... i am just real nervous loll i really want to go to columbia

Phantom: How has the first term been so far?

columbia 2006

the same thing happenedt o me. my secondary school report was sent with my transcript but my transcript says "not yet processed"

that made me nervous...

LMAO!!! my counselor sent in the transcript/sec. school report in together, and it says the transcript's been processed whereas the sec. school report hasn't

they're not processed together -- the transcript is indeed separated out

The first term has had its ups and downs. I absolutely love it here; however, my grade in my physics class is kinda icky right now though (I really bombed my midterm) so I'm studying hard for my second midterm this Wed. In terms of workload, I would say University Writing (a core class for both SEAS and college) is by far the most amount of work (I am currently only halfway done on a 3000 word research paper draft due tomorrow). It doesn't even have to do with procrastination -- they simply only give you less than five days to write drafts. Some people hate the class while others like it, I think it's helping me improve as a writer, so I like it.

I enjoy LitHum a lot (reading through all those great books just gives you an enormous sense of accomplishment), and I've learned more in my Chinese class here than in my 6 years of Chinese School. THe Columbia Daily Spectator is also an awesome experience.

phantom, do you know thania sanchez?

no i do not

that's too bad...i think she used to work as an admissions officer, but im not sure if she still does...if she does, please tell her alex from her conlaw class this summer says hi

should i worry that my secondary school report has been sent but my transcript hasn't been processed? should i have the transcript resent?

Hey Phantom

I applied to Columbia seas for early decision.

"They keep very detailed records on every instance of communication between an admissions rep and a student (another one of my jobs is updating these contacts)".

Do you know if they record any emails between admissions rep and students?
I live in India (but I am not an international applicant as I was born in the US) and I could not call the admissions reps due to the time difference between India and America.
Also my sister attends Columbia, will that increase my chances?
Should I ask her to go to the admissions office to talk to the admissions people to see if they received everything I have sent?

hey this is really making me lose my head my secondary school transcript was processed but not my college transcript which was in the same envelope should i resend

no, its fine, as far as I know -- they do sort them and file them separately

i think it should be okay. i was freaking out but i checked it again and now it says "processed"

"And for legacies: only parents really matter, although they look at siblings, too. We're told to remove cousins, aunts, grandparents, etc. They also doublecheck these things closely, so don't exaggerate or anything."

What do you mean by don't exaggerate?
