Columbia GS Fall 2020 Early Action/Regular Decision Thread

Woah, where are you hearing numbers over 50% from?

@froshman12 I’ve seen people say 50-60% on Reddit. Obviously not the most reputable source, but there is no way to confirm any of the numbers (including the ones being linked by GS because none of them are the same). In my opinion, GS should post the official stats on their site every year. Every other school has an easily accessible Common Data Set with information about acceptance rates and test scores. It makes you wonder why they don’t want to.

When GS began, it primarily targeted military veterans. They could probably afford the tuition with the GI Bill.

Hi,

I’ve been following this thread for a while and regarding the admitted student FB page, I’ve received this from messenger on the GS FB page “Yes, there will be a Fall 2020 admitted student group. It will be available in early June. Thanks for reaching out!”

Did you apply for FA and how was your offer?

Anyone else planning on deferring to spring 2021?

@ Yankeefan20

Nope! 100% eligble for GI BIll.

Hey guys, have you started working on the admitted student portal? If so, I would like to get some help…

@spark4654 it definitely crossed my mind to defer to the spring. According to others in the Discord server, however, you can only defer for a whole year as a new student… so autumn 2021. I think it may be best to brace ourselves to attend this year.

Columbia unfortunately can be an expensive school, and it is true that GS has a smaller endowment than the other undergraduate schools. However, there are scholarships are available!

While GS Admissions & Educational Financing can provide rough estimates of expected aid, the reality of the selective college admissions process is that an applicant has to first apply and go through the financial aid process before learning exactly how much financial aid they’ll receive. GS strongly encourages all admitted students to schedule a phone appointment with the Office of Educational Financing in order to ask questions about financing and get a clear picture of costs. Admitted students are required to submit the Planned Enrollment Form (which estimates the number of credits per semester a student plans to take) in order to complete the financial aid application, but they are NOT required to return the acceptance reply form or make a decision about enrollment before getting a financial aid package (and transfer credit information, if applicable), and speaking with the Office of Educational Financing. There is no firm deadline to reply to the offer of admission–some students wait until August–provided the reply comes before orientation.

Bottom line, you shouldn’t choose not to apply based solely on what you believe it will cost, as the actual cost breakdown could be quite different when accounting for scholarships. The best course of action (which every accepted student should take) is to schedule an appointment with the Office of Educational Financing, as they will be able to give you more personalized information on what the costs will be and what options are available to you. You DON’T need to commit before you get your financial aid package.

@GSTourGuides Yes, interested students should apply. There’s always a chance you could get enough financial aid. I needed my full need met with a 0 EFC. I knew that wasn’t realistic based on research and talking to admitted students. I decided to only apply to schools that meet full need for all admitted students. I have nothing against GS, I just knew it wasn’t going to be affordable for me in my particular situation. The goal of my post wasn’t to encourage people not to apply. It was strictly to bring up alternatives in case GS was only feasible with tons of debt. You are correct that admitted students should call and not just assume.

@accepted33 I have “awaiting Spring 2020 transcripts” annotated on my profile as well. I believe it might be for transfer credit eligibility and, like someone mentioned before, it might alter your admissions decision if your grades suffer significantly - but with this whole COVID-19 case, they might be more understanding. If you’re still maintaining great grades this semester, I wouldn’t worry.

@bertbert where did you hear this? I was admitted to Fall and I am successfully deferring to Spring 2021…

Are CC and GS students in the same classes?

@Yankeefan20 ” Are CC and GS students in the same classes?”

Yes

Moderator’s Note:
I’ve removed a number of posts in which bickering occurred. CC is not a debate society. Please be civil in your posting.

Thank you

GS students take the same classes as all other undergraduate students (including Barnard - Barnard students can take classes at Columbia, and other Columbia undergrads can take classes at Barnard). In terms of classes, there really aren’t any divides among GS, CC, SEAS, and Barnard students. The only class that GS students only take with other GS students is University Writing. You will share all of your Core and major classes with other undergrads across the university.

That being said, it is true that CC has its own alumni network, but you won’t be excluded from them. I’ve attended events like Ivy Ball where nobody makes a distinction between GS and CC grads or between Columbia bachelor’s and master’s graduates. I haven’t met anybody that really cares about which school you belong to; nobody outside of the Columbia network will even ask which undergraduate school you were in.

There are some minor academic differences. While your GPA will not be calculated differently, GS does have its own internal policies for awarding things like academic standing (Dean’s List, Latin honors, etc.). But overall, there is no reason to worry about any kind of academic division between CC and GS students, if that’s something you’re wondering about.

I just got my application submitted to defer to spring 2021. How long did it take for the deferral to be approved? @geekflower

Did anyone receive their financial aid offer yet? Did you guys all submit the Planned Enrollment form?

@signpainter I spoke with someone from financial aid today via remote appointment. I asked her all about the financial aid package. She let me know that we must fill out the PE form (she said she disliked the form because it was more for records on their end of admitted applicants) but that it is required before they give you the fin aid package. She said it was okay to estimate but she did let me know that you can only qualify for fin aid if you’re at least half-time. Will be filling out mine tonight, and she said it would take about a week to hear back with the package.
