Columbia Housing

Hey guys

In what buildings are some of you current students currently residing? What are the ins & outs, which ones are recommended?

For example, anyone living in

1) Manhattan Valley K & R Leased Properties (GS Housing) - 61/63 West 108th St & 950 Columbus Ave
2) Teacher’s College “New Residence,” - 517 West 121st St (GSAS, GS Only)

? :-)

Looks like I’m the only one interested where I’ll be living!? ;-)

I received an offer to live in “the Fairholm” on 121st street, in a single dormitory room of a 5 dormitory “suite”. Any experiences>

Patrick I’m with you. I’m however looking for off campus housing/my own apartment ( I have a girlfriend).

Out of curiosity, what are the costs of the places you were accepted to dorm?

It came down to around 912 USD per month, utilities included (incl wifi, cable, phone). 5 dorm suite, 2 bathrooms, 1 livingroom. I would have my private room, furnished.

I’m not from the states, so I’m a little clueless to what I should imagine under such a “dorm suite”!?

It’s on W121st street, so it’s two blocks away from the school. This is pretty amazing. The building looks nice too, but like I said, I don’t know anything about “dorm living.”

Whats the square footage? And how far is it from campus?

It’s 14’7" by 10’1", which is around 155 sq meters I believe. 2 blocks from campus

Sounds like a great offer, Patrick! And, a dorm suite is just an apartment share - not actual dorm living by any means. Your building will probably be a mix of students and non-Columbia people.

That seems pretty decent, and in line with what I’ve seen elsewhere. That’s definitely not 155 meters^2 though. More like 14, or 147 sqft.

FWIW I did get UAH for me and my girlfriend. We got our own tiny “2 bedroom” on W 122nd (The second bedroom is tiny, like 4x8 practically).

Sq ft. that’s what I meant. It’s all analysis paralysis between inch and cm, grams and ounces, etc since I’m in the US. Shopping in the supermarket and cooking is a pain in the butt.

Are you accepting your offer? I have talked to some people and everyone seems to think that the offer I received is decent. 147 sq ft. seems tiny, but I assume that’s Manhattan living!? ;-)

Only reason I want to dorm if I have an opportunity, is a chance to network with other GS people or other Columbian’s. If I cant get that then I have the means to rent somewhere around town.

How much do you expect outside for rent outside of school “around town” if I may ask? What’s the prices for a studio, 1 br?

is anyone that is looking to live off campus looking for a roommate? i’m going to be an incoming 3-2 student in the fall. i’ve found a few apts on 122nd st, and amesterdam, and even 116th on the other side of the park. pm me.
