Columbia Masters or University of Miami PhD

I have been accepted to both Columbia's masters program and U Miami's phd in the same subject. My goal is to get a phd in the end either way. I have no desire to be professor, so it is not absolutely necessary to get a phd from a really great school. The catch is that Columbia has 40,000 in tuition and then nyc housing and they're offering no financial aid. Whereas with Miami, they're offering me free tuition plus 24 grand stipend. So is two years at Columbia worth the money given that if I do well, I'll be able to get a free ride phd at a much better school than Miami?

Thoughts...

It kind of depends on the fit and your field, but unless Miami is an unranked program or has a bad reputation, then it’s probably not worth it.

How sure are you that you’ll be able to get a free ride at a significantly better school by doing well at Columbia? How sure are you that you’ll be able to do well enough at Columbia?

If you just want a PhD and don’t care too much about prestige, and if Miami has at least a decent reputation, you might as well save your money and time by going there.

Without knowing the program, theres really no way to answer this.

Why do you want a PhD if you don’t want to become a professor?
