So I just got out of my junior year of high school and was wondering if I have a shot of getting in to Columbia or any of the other ivies or top schools. I do realize that there is no magic key or magic extracurricular to guarantee an acceptance to one of these fine schools. That being said here we go........

Wow so academically you seem extremely strong. Your ecs are strong as ate your scores. But that’s only half the story.
Your essays also need to be strong and must set you apart in some way. You must also be able to answer “why Columbia” in a specific manner. Don’t be general.
The other important factor is your interview… You should be able to impress your interviewer and show that you are an ideal Columbia candidate.

First of all you are an AMAZING STUDENT!!! YOu will definitley get in. Keep those grades up and work on your essay. Make sure you visit the campus and get an interview too. GOOD LUCK!!

@gunit5. i did not simply look at this person’s scores and GPA. take a look at his extracurriculars, etc. i didn’t say he was guaranteed to get in. i said he had a great shot. do you disagree? SeattleBulldog is jumping the gun saying he’ll ‘definitely get in,’ but that’s not what i said. chance threads are called chance threads and not ‘yes or no’ threads for a reason - there’s no factual analysis here; we’re just giving our opinions

1) yo gunit, chill out bro, you’re right, no one can give you a 100% accurate chance…sorry if the fact that chance threads make up a big portion of this site makes you mad, ■■■■ if you want

2) @theartsyone I would say you have a GREAT shot. Your academics are way above average, and URM status + first generation gives you a boost.

3) your extracurriculars are not all over the place, they primarily focus on music and writing and you do have distinction in those areas.

4) At this point, do work on your essays, but I would say a mediocre essay wouldn’t kill you (still aim for your best though lol). Your teacher/counselor recs should be astonishing, given your academic/extracurricular record. As long as you didn’t have anything bad on your record (academic fraud, fighting, etc.) … I think you will most likely be admitted early decision!

5) You’ll get in somewhere good, that’s for sure, even if its not Columbia. Don’t fret too much over the summer haha, but do take advantage of it (volunteer, work, enrichment programs, and work on your application lol).

Yeah, there is no sure answer on how the process will turn out. Just make sure that the essays describe who you are. You must come across that is important. If you can get an interview, you should also try to make it strong.
