Columbia material?

So this is a thread on possible entry to Columbia with these stats theoretically extending through junior/senior year year.

For the record my public high school doesn’t offer the rigorous curriculum I would prefer and Columbia would prefer. Only 2-4AP courses, 1 foreign language, and a handful of pityful clubs and organizations. (Small town in Rural Alabama)

So here We go

sociology
P/E (cringing yet?)
Spanish I

Sophomore year

College preparedness

Junior year

AP history
Honors English
Honors environmental science
Finance
Psychology
Algrebra II/Trig

Senior year isn’t planned , I’m a junior this year

Current GPA unweighted, 4.0, w, 4.2 ( let’s say this is maintained through junior and senior year)

Haven’t taken ACT(only practice), but I am studying hard , so for sake of this forums purpose, which is to gauge my chances to get in to Columbia with a transcript not set in stone, let’s have a theoretical ACT score of 34(Which I will achieve at a minimum)

– and believe me I know ,the curriculum sucks, but it’s virtually the most rigorous available.

– the student body isn’t comprised of intellectuals eager to discuss and learn about the liberal arts, or learn about anything really.
– they’re are 2 or 3 teachers I’ve had that are great, that being in English, geometry and chemistry, some of which will write me letters of recommendation
– as I stated earlier, clubs are slim and generic, so I’ve made my own this year, and joined organizations outside of my high school ,but before I get into those let me tell you about me.

  • male -White -16 -raised by grandparents since age 8 due to parents drug problems, among other things ( this has been the greatest blessing in my life, changing my perspective for the better,to be the empathetic and open minded individual I am today) -managing stock portfolio, and soon to manage 6 figure ira.
  • hope to pursue a career in finance, and start own equity firm/fund.
  • passionate for finance, politics, science, arts, literature philosophy, and in touch with such. (Especially finance and politics ) To emphasize this, I've often been referred to by friends as "an old soul." I take it as a compliment, but keep in mind I'm a dynamic individual, who is very laid back, loves the night life (I've been places) and very outgoing. Not an old soul in most aspects.
  • now for extracurriculars Beginning in junior and extending through senior year.
  • founder/president of finance club for our high school: meet 2-4 times a month, I teach basics of stock market, each member has mock investing application, where they compete and learn to invest in the markets and the importance of saving/ prospects of growth
  • founder/president of science club- meet 1-2 times a month: science ranging from astronomy to evolution(which is extremely controversial here, 99.9% of this demographic is Republican Christian conservatives, even if they don't even know what a republican or conservative is; I'm on the opposite of the spectrum, a atheist Liberal dem)
  • member of (hour away)democrats group- meet and discuss political climate, personal life, etc once a month Member of local atheist/agnostic group - meet once a month Member of investment organization(hour away)- teaches value investment strategies, meet once a month (again ALL of these where joined, created in the summer of this year, now coming to a close and starting junior year)

So that’s about it as far as details of educational life goes. If anyone would like to know anything else, concerning curricular or personal life don’t hesitate to ask. You opinions on my current/prospective transcript are appreciated.

You seem like an exceptionally strong candidate if you get your high ACT score. You have a good geographic hook. I remember one Alabamian in my class, but he was a preppy from Birmingham. You might have a good essay subject, too, being an atheist in a sea of born-agains, and even going to meetings for it! Columbia and Columbians like intellectual iconoclasts. If I were you I’d apply ED if Columbia is your top choice.
