[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I think this really helped me out. I spent a long time crafting my Why Columbia short answer. My essay was about the differences between going to a college-prep private school and working at a dingy record store where everyone asks not "Where are you going to college?" but rather "Are you going to college?"
[] Teacher Recs: I used to write Smiths lyrics at the top of my AP Euro essays because my teacher was a fan. History is by far my best subject and he gave me advice on mixtaping. I'm assuming the rec was delicious. My English teacher should've been good too; she worked with me on the school newspaper as well.
[] Counselor Rec: Who knows? My counselor emailed me last week to ask if I'd heard from Penn ED yet, but apparently this was pretty good.
[] Hook (if any): I thought about this for a while after getting in. I'm Asian, but I guess my EC's and essays weren't really what you'd call stereotypical - I sell vinyl and write for a music mag; I don't work for Kumon.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Missouri
[] School Type: Private

[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors: I was founder and president of my school's first GSA, president of the environmental club for four years, A&E Editor of my school newspaper, layout editor for my school's literary magazine, varsity swimming, and I write for a music webmagazine. I also sent in my mid-term grades which included a comment by my current English teacher that literally said that she was learning more from me than I was from her class. I submitted an image sheet of 12 of my best photos from photography, which I think may have helped too. General Comments: I was so sure I wasn't getting in that I'd already told everyone I was going to Chicago next year for college. I am a very lucky person. The whole John Jay Scholar thing is so ridiculous, I don't even know what to say.

Subjective:
Essays: Strong. Spent a lot of time refining short answer questions and making long essay personal and engaging.
Teacher Recs: Believe they were very solid, if not a bit better
Counselor Rec:Strong--he did a very thorough job
Hook (if any): Top finisher National Spelling Bee which is at least unique even though it was some time ago.

Location/Person:
State or Country: Arizona
School Type: Public with IB Magnet Program. A respectable school for AZ with the 3rd highest number of NMSFs in the State
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female

Other Factors: NMSF, multiple awards for art, community service recognition, travel to China and Mexico as a city representative, and intensive classical and musical theater dance involvement for 15 years, including professional productions, choreography, teaching and working with disabled adults. This came out as a clear "passion" in all aspects of the application.

General Comments: She never had an interview. No Columbia rep ever visited her school or met her at a regional event. She did not send in an arts supplement. In fact, she followed the intent of the application exactly as articulated and stayed within the word count and did not submit any supplemental materials. She just focused on making every inch of the application tell her story as best she could. She visited Columbia two years ago while we were vacationing in NYC--it was her first college tour and she fell completely in love with it. She has not read or posted on these threads, but I have shared the things I have read. When she saw the profiles of those who had also applied ED, especially those who were rejected or deferred, she was humbled.

Congrats to those accepted! For whoever asked, you're not going to get your email addresses until sometime in May.

For those of you who were deferred, don't slack on your backup apps because the chances are still slim that you'll get in. (I'm not trying to be discouraging, just truthful)

For those of you who were rejected, you're not alone. Remember that last year ~9/10 people who applied to Columbia were rejected. They still found amazing colleges to go to. Life is not over.

I want to add my congrats to those who were accepted!

Also, an observation:

With all the awful weather/ice storm/power outages, don't you know that there are many out there who know their decision is available yet can't access it online!!! Oh, man, that must be awful!

Congratulations to everyone who got in! You must be very happy. Enjoy your senior year now!

I haven't seen any status from an accepted international. I had 2 friends applying, both with very great stats: strong physics background, including several important prizes. One of them was rejected by CC, while the other one, despite 2 international physics awards (not IPO, but almost), was only deffered by SEAS. I am really curios about how strong the international pool was this year, since I want to apply RD with no such an imposing status.
