Ok. So, I'm looking for an insider opinion. I know it's dumb to decide things based on other people's opinions but...I can't decide between the two. So, here's me: I will major in English, and possibly Poli Sci. I would like to be a writer, so if I could get into a publshing house, that'd be great. And really, I can't decide if I like the Core or the freedom of Brown. What would you advise? I enjoy big cities, and I really hope to get an internship at a publishing house. What is some information about either school that you could give me that might help me decide?

there are so many different threads about this.
it’s funny how these two schools (supposedly polar opposites) attract many of the same prospies!

i’d scroll down your page and look at “similar threads”
there’s a GREAT one on the Columbia forum actually.

here is food for thought -

1) it really doesn’t matter which school you choose, if you work hard, and network well, you can achieve your goals. if you slack, then you wont be able to achieve what you want. so i would start by narrowing your perspective - what excites you most for 4 years. i would also try to figure out how realistic a shot you have at either school and line up other great schools that will offer comparable strengths and solid financial aid (but perhaps don’t have single digit admit numbers).

2) that being said, columbia would be an ideal place for your academic and personal desires - a big city with a lot of connections to the publishing world and a top notch creative writing program. you sound like you’d really like the city life.

3) the core is the best part of Columbia, probably even better than the city itself, i’d say. it will challenge you in a lot of ways, and though it may not always go down right while you are at school, as an alum you will look back with pride and happiness you got a chance.

4) unless you are asking now because you are contemplating applying ED to either, you are allowed to apply to both and see if you get in. you have like 11 mths before you have to submit a deposit. a caution - if over the period you learn that you can’t stand a school, don’t apply or withdraw your application; if you are admitted that is a helluva a screw you to a fellow applicant.

Take it easy on yourself. Just apply to both… and let the school choose you!

Well,personally I think Columbia is better

Dartmouth! Enough said. But seriously, Columbia and Brown are both good schools. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Columbia’s a fantastic school. Personally, I would pick Brown though.

Brown = legit

Both are fantastic schools. Choose the one you like more.

My choice came down to these two (I was accepted at both of them - I was rejected from Pton, Stanford, and Dartmouth). I picked Brown because of the more active social scene and the existence of a more traditional campus life. The Columbia students I know from high school seem happy, but not in love with Columbia the same way students at Brown are. Also socially going into NYC is much less important to me than having a real campus social life.
