Columbia or Brown?

Ok. So, I’m looking for an insider opinion. I know it’s dumb to decide things based on other people’s opinions but…I can’t decide between the two. So, here’s me: I will major in English, and possibly Poli Sci. I would like to be a writer, so if I could get into a publshing house, that’d be great. And really, I can’t decide if I like the Core or the freedom of Brown. What would you advise? I enjoy big cities, and I really hope to get an internship at a publishing house. What is some information about either school that you could give me that might help me decide?

If you don’t have a clear #1 choice (and you don’t, probably, or you wouldn’t ask this) just apply RD to both schools (and several less selective ones, obviously) and see where you get in. If you insist on applying ED somewhere, check out the dept’s at both schools in your major of choice, if you have one.

I’m beginning to think we should have a sticky about the Columbia vs. Brown question – this is at least the third thread started on this in the last week or so.

Go a little deeper into the Brown forum, or do a search, and you’ll find this question asked and answered.

I have a great solution for anyone with this same problem:

See where you get in. It will be a lot easier to choose then.

fireandrain, I think that his situation is specific enough to warrant a new thread. I know your responses in this forum have been both plentiful and insightful, and for that reason, many members have come to your defense when people criticize you for redundantly telling users to use the search function. If you think all that you’d add has already been answered elsewhere, then move on. Again, your service has always been, and will continue to be, appreciated, and your responses helped me greatly during my own application process, but please, be gentle.

zacheryrufa, I don’t know much about English departments myself, but look here for English [graduate school] rankings: [Rankings - English - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-english-schools/rankings). Eh, rankings are rankings, so take them only for what they’re worth. Also note that the way they calculate graduate rankings for English may have absolutely no relevance to your undergraduate education at any of those schools.

Also, here’s a thread that you’ll find very relevant for English: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/220386-colleges-offer-best-undergraduate-writing-programs.html</a></p>

And poli sci? I know both Brown and Columbia have intensely politically-active student bodies. If you want rankings: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-political-science-schools/rankings</a>. Both are among the best in international relations, if you’re interested in that.
