Columbia Racist?

Swastika written on walls of Columbia bathroom

Noose hangings

there are a few lunatics everywhere, you don't stigmatize a school because of that, columbia most certainly condemns the acts, as does just about everyone on campus (except maybe the perpetraitors). it's just that right now the few and far between lunatics are using columbia's deluge of controversy to sneak a hate crime or two of their own in. Very offensive and even racist bathroom graffiti happens everywhere it isn't uncommon, it certainly isn't indicative of something larger or some rife undercurrent sentiment. The noose is uncommon and hopefully the person who put it up will be caught and kicked out.

the problem might even be compounded by everyone reacting so strongly to it - i.e. you send the message to a perpetraitor that any hate message will receive a violent reaction. Think about it, if no-one reacted at all, there'd be no incentive to put offensive stuff up on walls. graffiti sets out to be provocative.

I have no knowledge of this incident, but I do want to agree with confidentialcoll on a lot of points.

This is completely true. In my school as well, a swastika was drawn on the bathroom wall, and honestly, my school is the least racist place I have ever been. It is extremely diverse, and everyone is so comfortable with that diversity and so communal that if you walked up to someone and called them a racial slur, they would just smile, laugh, and call you one back. Additionally, it's so small that everyone knows practically everyone else. Don't think that I'm being insensitive to the issue-I myself am Jewish-but 9 times out of 10 it's no big deal, and, as confidentialcoll pointed out, is not indicative of something larger.

Can anyone who's taken Bollinger's class and/or is familiar with his work/views tell me what his stance is on criminalizing hate speech / symbolic hate speech?
