I read that Columbia requires 2 SAT subject tests and accepts any subjects. Will they accept more than 2? Are they more likely to accept me if I submit more than 2?

I got an 800 on Chemistry, so I'm definitely submitting that. I got a 720 on Math II, and I don't know whether or not to submit that. Any sites with statistics on what kinds of scores Columbia is looking for would be great. I'm expecting a good score on Biology, so I'll submit that. If I got a 720 on Math II, should I take Math I and expect to get a 750 or higher? Also, I am in Spanish 5 Honors...how hard is the Spanish SAT subject test?

Such a specific case and so many questions, I know...but any information would be great!

Columbia considers the two highest scores for the SAT subject tests but you are free to send more. I received a 720 for Physics and sent it as my third score. Personally, I would retake Math II and aim for 750+; your score isn’t bad but given the good curve for Math II, you can probably do better. I would not take Math I, which many top colleges don’t consider.

I can testify in saying that the Spanish SAT II was one of the hardest standardized tests I’ve ever taken, and I studied intensely for months. Don’t waste the time. I’d take that after you take the AP (if you plan to) and just hope for a good enough score to place out of the language requirement.

My guidance counselor said it’s a really bad idea to take the subject tests twice. Colleges see it and greatly dislike it.

Did you get accepted? Do you think your 720 in Physics was helpful? When you say that Columbia considers the two highest ones but you can send more, does that mean that if 720 is lower than what they like for math II, and I have two good other scores, they’ll disregard the math II, or will it count against me?

Thanks! I won’t waste my time on Math I then.

Nearly all colleges, with the exception of a VERY few, allow you to pick and choose which subject tests you want to send. If you only send in your top score, the college will have no way of knowing how many times you retook the test. So I still definitely recommend that you retake Math II, especially if you are math/science-major oriented.

I’m an applicant this year. From the Columbia website:

A 720 will not count against you but probably won’t help you either, considering that many Columbia applicants will have scores of 750+ (given the level of competition). I personally included my 720 in Physics only because I wanted to fill up the 8 spots on the Common App for testing scores.

And regarding your very first question: Yes, your application will receive a boost if you submit more than 2 excellent SAT subject test scores. Listing three 800’s looks better than two 800’s - it’s just a given.

Ok, so I’ll definitely reconsider the Math II.

And I read that part which is why I was confused in the first place. They only “consider” the two best, but like you said, it’ll be impressive to send more. Of course, if you have 3 800s, then none is the highest and they’ll be forced to notice how awesome you are XD.

3 subjects + 1 normal SAT means you took 4 APs?

I know someone who did…she’s really smart, so I’m guessing it’s not that bad to take it in November. I think it mostly matters how hard you study.

Regarding scores: If my ACT composite sits at 34, and I’ve achieved a 750 on the SAT II Chemistry test, do I satisfy the general standard for testing at the school?

I’m in Spanish V AP and I got a 500… white, non-native speaker, I’m horrible with grammar so, yeah. I don’t recommend unless you can completely comprehend a low-level book in Spanish.

send as many tests as you want to columbia. the more the merrier. in officially calculations they will only look at your highest 2, but if you have 3 or 4 over 750, it will show depth.

a few things to consider: if you are engineering oriented and do the triple threat (math2, chem, physics) just know that a few thousand students applying to columbia get triple 800s.

if you want to do economics, you need to take math2

your tests should ideally match your academic interests first, and complement your interests second. i.e. tests 1 and 2 should relate to your interests, 3+ can relate or add further.

I realize this is a generally old post, but just to clarify for my application this year, if I have taken the ACT, do I need to take any SAT subject tests???

I called Columbia admissions to double check and they said that if you submit the ACT with writing, you do not have to submit SAT subject tests.
